Detection and classification of mild irregular astigmatism in patients with good visual acuity.

Videokeratography has been available for a decade, and this test is essential for determining the presence and type of irregular corneal astigmatism. Three eyes diagnosed with myopic astigmatism and considered good candidates for refractive surgery with conventional examination were studied. Color-coded maps with videokeratography showed regular astigmatism in one eye and the existence of irregular astigmatism in two eyes. Videokeratography showed that one of these eyes had a keratoconus suspect pattern and the second showed a pattern consistent with pellucid marginal degeneration. Videokerato

[Corneal topography of patients with unsatisfactory visual acuity after epikeratophakia for aphakia].

Corneal topographic characteristics of 5 patients who obtained unsatisfactory vision after aphakic epikeratophakia, with at least nine months follow-up, were reported. All grafts were apparently decentered relative to visual axis. The contour of cornea showed highly irregular pattern of power distribution. These findings suggest that to mark visual axis before surgery, lathe corneal lenses carefully and do standard operation should be the basis of successful epikeratophakia.

Impaired proprioceptive acuity at the proximal interphalangeal joint in patients with the hypermobility syndrome.

Twelve patients with the hypermobility syndrome (> or = 4 on the Beighton score) were examined to establish whether they showed any impairment of proprioception. A position matching paradigm was used which required subjects to align a finger silhouette with the kinaesthetically perceived position of their hidden index finger. Position sense at the PIP joint was found to be significantly (P < 0.0001) impaired in hypermobile patients who made larger matching errors at all angles compared to age- and sex-matched controls. The patients also demonstrated biasing in the direction of errors made when

Effect of acuity level and patient characteristics on bowel preparation quality: a retrospective cohort study of inpatient colonoscopies.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Colonoscopy is the primary method to detect mucosal abnormalities in the colon, rectum, and terminal ileum. Inadequate bowel preparation is a common problem and can impede successful visualization during colonoscopy. Although studies identified hospitalization as a predictor of inadequate bowel preparation, acuity of care vary greatly within this patient population. The current study aims to examine the effect of patient characteristics and care level predictors on inadequate bowel preparation quality within the inpatient setting. METHODS: This retrospective study was con

Improvement In Visual Acuity Six Months After Penetrating Keratoplasty In Patients Of Keratoconus.

BACKGROUND: Keratoconus (KC) is a bilateral, asymmetric, corneal disorder that is characterized by progressive thinning, steepening, and potential scarring. In the early stages of keratoconus treatment can be modulated with contact lenses but once it reaches to scarring, penetrating keratoplasty (PK) is the standard procedure of care. As there is not enough published data on penetrating keratoplasty in Pakistan and also early visual outcomes post keratoconus keratoplasty have not been established so this study would be beneficial for further research and opting keratoplasty as a procedure for

High acuity sleeve gastrectomy patients in a free-standing ambulatory surgical center.

BACKGROUND: Procedures performed in ambulatory surgical centers (ASC) can provide several advantages over hospital-based surgery. Understandably, concerns have been raised regarding "high acuity" cases in the ASC setting. Recently the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP) presented protocols for ASCs to follow, requiring them to perform only "low acuity" cases to be compliant with accreditation. OBJECTIVE: Assess the safety and efficacy of outpatient sleeve gastrectomy (SG) on the "high acuity patient" in a free-standing ASC. SETTING: Free-st
