Hospital Preparations for Viral Hemorrhagic Fever Patients and Experience Gained from Admission of an Ebola Patient.

The Major Incident Hospital of the University Medical Centre of Utrecht has a longstanding history of preparing for the management of highly pathogenic and infectious organisms. An assessment of the hospital's preparations for an outbreak of viral hemorrhagic fever and its experience during admission of a patient with Ebola virus disease showed that the use of the buddy system, frequent training, and information sessions for staff and their relatives greatly increased the sense of safety and motivation among staff. Differing procedures among ambulance services limited the number of services us

Factors associated with persistent delirium after intensive care unit admission in an older medical patient population.

PURPOSE: This study was designed to identify factors associated with persistent delirium in an older medical intensive care unit (ICU) population. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a prospective cohort study of 309 consecutive medical ICU patients 60 years or older. Persistent delirium was defined as delirium occurring in the ICU and continuing upon discharge to the ward. The Confusion Assessment Method was used to assess for delirium. Patient demographics, severity of illness, and medication data were collected. Univariate and multivariate analysis were used to assess factors associated with pe

Depressive Symptoms Are Associated With Lower Patient Expectations for Recovery Following Cardiac Intensive Care Unit Admission.

BACKGROUND: Patients' expectations for recovery after cardiac intensive care unit (CICU) admission may influence their engagement in post-discharge care and overall recovery trajectory. While some evidence links expectations with clinical outcomes, few studies have examined how sociodemographic and clinical characteristics influence these expectations in CICU survivors. OBJECTIVE: To examine associations between sociodemographic and clinical characteristics and patients' expectations for recovery after a CICU stay. METHODS: This is a cross-sectional analysis of a longitudinal cohort of CICU

Management and patient outcomes following admission with acute cholecystitis in Ireland: A national registry-based study.

INTRODUCTION: Acute cholecystitis is a common general surgical emergency, accounting for 3-10 % of all patients attending with acute abdominal pain. International guidelines suggest that emergency cholecystectomy is the treatment of choice for uncomplicated acute cholecystitis where feasible. There is a paucity of published data on the uptake of emergency cholecystectomy in Ireland. AIM: The aim of this study was to evaluate the management of acute cholecystitis in Ireland and to establish the rate of emergency cholecystectomy performed. METHODS: All patients with acute cholecystitis present

Patient outcomes following emergency admission to hospital for COVID-19 compared with influenza: retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: We examine differences in posthospitalisation outcomes, and health system resource use, for patients hospitalised with COVID-19 during the UK's first pandemic wave in 2020, and influenza during 2018 and 2019. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study used routinely collected primary and secondary care data. Outcomes, measured for 90 days follow-up after discharge were length of stay in hospital, mortality, emergency readmission and primary care activity. RESULTS: The study included 5132 patients admitted to hospital as an emergency, with COVID-19 and influenza cohorts comprising 3

Maximum Temperature and Solar Radiation as Predictors of Bipolar Patient Admission in an Emergency Psychiatric Ward.

Environmental variables can regulate behavior in healthy subjects. Recently, some authors investigated the role of meteorological variables in bipolar patients with an impact on both the onset and course of bipolar disorder (BD). The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of meteorological variables and other indexes in bipolar hospitalized patients. We examined all patients admitted to the Psychiatric Inpatient Unit of San Luigi Gonzaga Hospital, Orbassano (Turin, Italy) from September 2013 to August 2015, collecting several socio-demographic and clinical characteristics. Seven hundr

Comparison of the Initiation Time of Enteral Nutrition for Critically Ill Patients: At Admission vs. 24 to 48 Hours after Admission.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the better time of initiation of enteral nutrition for critically ill patients, such as at admission or 24 to 48 hours after admission. METHODS: This was a prospective, randomized, parallel-controlled, single-blind, interventional clinical trial. A total of 100 patients admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) of our hospital between January 2017 and December 2018 were recruited in this study. These patients had been divided into the control group or intervention group by a computer-generated random number table, and each group had 50 patients. For the control group

Admission hyperphosphatemia as a predictor of severity and mortality in acute pancreatitis: A 1000-patient cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Although most acute pancreatitis (AP) cases are mild, up to 20% progress to severe disease, leading to substantial morbidity and mortality. Early risk stratification remains challenging because conventional scoring systems require multiple parameters and often depend on 24-48 hours of observation. AIM: To evaluate whether serum phosphate levels measured upon hospital admission can predict disease severity and short-term clinical outcomes in patients with AP. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 1000 consecutive patients hospitalized for AP between November 2023 and June 2025. Adm

Impact of pre-admission functional status on intensive care patient outcomes: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Pre-admission functional status might be associated with mortality in critically ill patients admitted to the ICU. With this systematic review, we aimed to investigate the association of pre-admission functional domains with mortality after ICU admission and which functional measures were used. METHODS: We searched PubMed, Embase, and the Cochrane Register of Controlled Trials for studies of acutely admitted adult ICU patients reporting pre-admission functional status and mortality. Exploratory outcomes were mechanical ventilation, renal replacement therapy, delirium, ICU and hosp

Optimizing antepartum admission care: Assessing the influence of QR code-based patient education on postpartum contraception rates.

INTRODUCTION: With the uncertain landscape of abortion laws across the United States, the importance of postpartum contraception has increased, particularly for women experiencing high-risk pregnancies requiring antepartum hospitalization. Conversations about contraception are often overshadowed by the myriad of other discussions related to high-risk pregnancies. This is especially significant for birthing persons of color, given the history of systemic racism and coercion related to permanent sterilization. This quality improvement project aimed to address these issues by implementing a novel

Patient Characteristics Associated with Hospital Admission or Antiarrhythmic Medication Changes After Emergency Department Evaluation of Supraventricular Tachycardia.

BACKGROUND: Supraventricular tachycardia (SVT) is a relatively frequent diagnosis in the pediatric emergency department (ED). However, there are no consensus guidelines for ED disposition, and there are limited data on ED outcomes. Better understanding of those who are admitted or have antiarrhythmic medication changes may avoid potentially unnecessary transfers or admissions. Our objective was to identify patient factors associated with discharge from the emergency department without medication initiation or modification after management of SVT in the pediatric ED. DESIGN/METHODS: A retrospe

Bacteriological cultures on admission of the burn patient: To do or not to do, that's the question.

INTRODUCTION: In many burn centers, routine bacteriological swabs are taken from the nose, throat, perineum, and the burn wound on admission, to check for the presence of microorganisms that require specific measures in terms of isolation or initial treatment. According to the Dutch policy of "search and destroy," for example, patients infected by multiresistant bacteria have to be strictly isolated, and patients colonized with β-hemolytic Streptococcus pyogenes must receive antibiotic therapy to prevent failed primary closure or loss of skin grafts. In this respect, the role of bacteria cultu

[Patient admission to a child and adolescent psychiatric polyclinic. Referral, patient information, preparation, concepts, expectations and fears of children, adolescents and their parents].

This study investigates 77 families i.e. their children, aged 7-17, and their parents, who attended the out-patient clinic of the child psychiatric department for the first time. It was intended to examine and outline the subjective situation on entering the clinic. A structured verbal interview was conducted with the children before the start of the actual examination procedure, while a written questionnaire was submitted to the parents. Among the questioned items were modes of referral, references, sources of information, knowledge and preparedness, ideas, expectations and apprehensions abou

Admission pulse pressure and in-hospital mortality in type A acute aortic dissection: result from a Chinese study in stable patients on admission.

OBJECTIVES: In recent years, several epidemiologic studies have shown that pulse pressure (PP) is a powerful predictor of mortality from many cardiovascular diseases. However, few studies have reported the association between PP and adverse events during hospitalization in patients with type A acute aortic dissection (TAAAD). The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between admission PP and in-hospital all-cause mortality, in patients with TAAAD of relatively stable patients. METHODS: Patients with TAAAD of relatively stable patients admitted from January 2015 to December 2021 w

Treatment Complications Associated With Hospital Admission in Oropharyngeal Cancer Patients.

BACKGROUND: Oropharyngeal cancer (OPC) survivorship is a nursing priority because patients are living longer while significant short-term and long-term treatment complications that require nursing care are increasing. Hospital readmission is costly and reflects the quality of care patients receive. OBJECTIVES: This secondary analysis aimed to determine the prevalence of treatment complications resulting in hospital admissions among persons with OPC and examine the relationship between treatment complications resulting in hospital admission among persons with OPC and all other persons with hea

Effect of Admission and Onset Time on the Prognosis of Patients With Cardiogenic Shock.

BACKGROUND: The spectrum of patients with cardiogenic shock (CS) has changed significantly over time. CS has become especially more common in the absence of acute myocardial infarction (AMI), while this subset of patients was typically excluded from recent studies. Furthermore the prognostic impact of onset time and onset place due to CS has rarely been investigated. RESEARCH QUESTION: Do the place of CS onset (out-of-hospital, ie, primary CS vs in-hospital, ie, secondary CS) and the onset time of out-of-hospital CS (ie, on-hours vs off-hours admission) affect the risk of all-cause mortality
