Realistic reproduction of human facial expressions is essential for realistic interactions between humans and humanoid robots. This work presents a data-driven framework for transferring human facial expressions to a humanoid robot and a virtual avatar, aiming to enhance emotional expressiveness and assess its applicability in psychiatric training scenarios. The proposed approach enables cross-domain facial expression mapping while accounting for mechanical constraints of robotic actuation. A user study (n = 40) evaluated emotion recognition across three stimulus categories: human faces (H), u

BACKGROUND: Boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) is a treatment modality that utilises high intensity neutron beam in combination with a boron drug to target cancer cells at the cellular level. Despite decades of research in this field, there are very few reports on out-of-field patient dose of BNCT.
PURPOSE: To quantify patient whole-body out-of-field dose during clinical BNCT for recurrent head-and-neck cancer using an integrated measurement-simulation workflow.
METHODS: The data of 271 patients that received BNCT for recurrent head and neck were analyzed for this study.First, the neutron

BACKGROUND: Virtual patients (VPs) are computer screen-based simulations of patient-clinician encounters. VP use is limited by cost and low scalability.
OBJECTIVE: We aimed to show that VPs powered by large language models (LLMs) can generate authentic dialogues, accurately represent patient preferences, and provide personalized feedback on clinical performance. We also explored using LLMs to rate the quality of dialogues and feedback.
METHODS: We conducted an intrinsic evaluation study rating 60 VP-clinician conversations. We used carefully engineered prompts to direct OpenAI's generative p

Background and Objectives: Anesthesiologists come into contact with patients under palliative care in different clinical settings. They also routinely encounter these patients in their primary field of work, the operating room. Patients receiving palliative care who are scheduled for surgery will pose unique challenges in perioperative management, often presenting with advanced disease and with different psychosocial and ethical issues. This study aims to evaluate whether anesthesiologists without specialty training in palliative medicine will spot perioperative challenges presented by patient

INTRODUCTION: Even in well-developed healthcare systems, raising awareness for undesirable dangers and risks of modern healthcare services among the clinical staff is a continuous and methodical challenge. The concept of the so-called "Room of Horrors" is both an innovative and a low-fidelity simulation approach for team-based training of patient safety-relevant hazards. The purpose of this evaluation study is to report on practicability and acceptance of such a low-threshold simulation training.
METHOD: A fictitious patient room including a patient manikin (lying in bed) was set up in the ho

OBJECTIVE: Planned mitral repair strategies are generally established from preoperative echocardiography; however, specific details of the repair are often determined intraoperatively. We propose that three-dimensional printed, patient-specific, dynamic mitral valve models may help surgeons plan and trial all the details of a specific patient's mitral repair preoperatively.
METHODS: Using preoperative echocardiography, segmentation, modeling software, and three-dimensional printing, we created dynamic, high-fidelity, patient-specific mitral valve models including the subvalvular apparatus. We

Arteriovenous fistulae (AVF) are the preferred choice of vascular access in hemodialysis patients; however, complications such as stenosis can lead to access failure or recirculation, which reduces dialysis efficiency. This study utilized computational fluid dynamics on a patient-specific radiocephalic fistula under hemodialysis treatment to determine the dynamics of access recirculation and identify the presence of disturbed flow. Metrics of transverse wall shear stress (transWSS) and oscillatory shear index (OSI) were used to characterize the disturbed flow acting on the blood vessel wall, w

BACKGROUND: Left ventricular assist devices (LVAD) are increasingly used for long-term mechanical circulatory support and are effective in improving survival and quality-of-life of patient with advanced heart failure. Nonetheless, they are associated with significant early and late morbidity rates (including pump thrombosis, thromboembolic events, and pump dysfunction). These complications are at least partially associated with suboptimal pump positioning. Currently, we are missing tools to further improve the positioning of LVAD devices in a patient-specific fashion.

This study describes computer simulation of blood flow and plaque progression pattern in a patient who underwent surgical treatment for infected carotid prosthetic tube graft using carotid-carotid cross-over bypass. The 3D blood flow is governed by the Navier-Stokes equations, together with the continuity equation. Mass transfer within the blood lumen and through the arterial wall is coupled with the blood flow and is modelled by the convection-diffusion equation. Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) transport in lumen of the vessel is described by Kedem-Katchalsky equations. The inflammatory process

We previously developed a load-adaptive bone modelling and remodelling simulation model that can predict changes in the bone micro-architecture as a result of changes in mechanical loading or cell activity. In combination with a novel algorithm to estimate loading conditions, this offers the possibility for patient-specific predictions of bone modelling and remodelling. Based on such models, the underlying mechanisms of bone diseases and/or the effects of certain drugs and their influence on the bone micro-architecture can be investigated. In the present study we test the ability of this appro

Discrete event simulation (DES) of patient flows is essential for the design of emergency departments (EDs), because it enables exploration of scenarios without disrupting real systems. Although DES is beneficial, it is limited by high modeling requirements. In simulations, each scenario to be analyzed must be individually modeled, which consumes significant time and resources. Moreover, models can rapidly become obsolete. This can be caused by changes in patient population, such as an increase in the number of cases during flu season and other seasonal variations. This study explored how to e

Background/Objective: Precise preprocedural planning is essential for the safety and efficacy of structural heart interventions. Conventional imaging modalities, while informative, do not allow for direct and accurate visualization, limiting procedural predictability. We aimed to develop and validate a high-resolution micro-computed tomography (microCT)-based reverse modeling workflow that integrates digital reconstructions of metallic cardiac devices into patient imaging datasets, enabling accurate, patient-specific virtual simulation for procedural planning. Methods: Clinical-grade transcath

We introduce a new computational framework that utilises Pulse Wave Velocity (PWV) extracted directly from 4D flow MRI (4DMRI) to inform patient-specific compliant computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations of a Type-B aortic dissection (TBAD), post-thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR). The thoracic aortic geometry, a 3D inlet velocity profile (IVP) and dynamic outlet boundary conditions are derived from 4DMRI and brachial pressure patient data. A moving boundary method (MBM) is applied to simulate aortic wall displacement. The aortic wall stiffness is estimated through two methods:

Aortic dissection is exceedingly rare in the pediatric population. However, it is much more common among children and adolescents with certain underlying syndromes, including Turner syndrome. Furthermore, aortic dissection carries significant mortality without prompt diagnosis and management. Therefore, pediatric emergency providers should know how to recognize and treat pediatric aortic dissection in a patient with Turner syndrome. We designed this simulation for pediatric emergency medicine fellows. A simulated adolescent female patient with a known history of Turner syndrome presents with c

INTRODUCTION: The first patient-specific biomechanical model for planning the surgical reduction of acetabular fractures was developed in our institution and validated retrospectively. There are no prior studies showing its effectiveness in terms of reduction quality, operative duration and intraoperative bleeding. Therefore, we performed a case control study aiming to: 1) evaluate the effect of preoperative simulation by patient-specific biomechanical simulator on the operating time and intraoperative bleeding; 2) evaluate the effect of preoperative simulation by patient-specific biomechanica

INTRODUCTION: Patient handoffs, the communications required for the safe transfer of patient care, are known to be a common source of medical errors. Simulation exercises are effective techniques for teaching the procedures and patient interaction skills involved in a handoff. We developed a teaching tool that allows students to individually interact with a simulated patient, develop a treatment plan, and practice a handoff to another provider.
METHODS: The curriculum is a flexible instructional tool to teach patient handoffs in the context of a simulated obstetric emergency for learners at t

The behaviour of ideational apraxic patients on simple tasks involving multiple objects is typically marked by a variety of errors. While some of these errors concern the sequential organisation of action through time, many relate to the misuse of, or failure to use, necessary or appropriate tools. In this paper we apply the computational model of Cooper and Shallice (2000) to five standard multiple object tasks used in clinical assessment and demonstrate how, when lesioned, the model can account for the error profiles of two ideational apraxic patients discussed by Rumiati et al. (2001). Appl
