Disruption of adult olfactory neurogenesis induces deficits in maternal behavior in sheep.

Profound behavioral changes occur in the mother at parturition, a time when the maternal brain undergoes extensive remodeling of neural circuits, especially in olfactory structures. Adult neurogenesis, a form of brain plasticity, could constitute an adaptive response to motherhood. The present study hypothesized that chemical disruption of olfactory neurogenesis would impair the establishment of maternal behavior in sheep. In addition, because ewes are able to learn the olfactory signature of their offspring, we also examined whether disruption of olfactory neurogenesis altered recognition of

Material specific lateralization of medial temporal lobe function: An fMRI investigation.

The theory of material specific lateralization of memory function posits that left and right MTL regions are asymmetrically involved in mnemonic processing of verbal and nonverbal material respectively. Lesion and functional imaging (fMRI) studies provide robust evidence for a left MTL asymmetry in the verbal memory domain. Evidence for a right MTL/nonverbal asymmetry is not as robust. A handful of fMRI studies have investigated this issue but have generally utilised nonverbal stimuli which are amenable to semantic elaboration. This fMRI study aimed to investigate the neural correlates of reco

Cannabinoid agonist WIN55,212-2 prevents scopolamine-induced impairment of spatial memory in rats.

The endocannabinoid system is involved in diverse processes, like learning and memory, governed by cholinergic neurotransmission. Recent research demonstrates that in a rat model of dementia derived from basal forebrain cholinergic degeneration, WIN55,212-2, a potent cannabinoid receptor agonist, improves cognition through increased cortical choline levels. However, the effect of cannabinoids on cholinergic deficits is still under investigation. In this work, we studied the effect of this treatment in a pharmacological rat model of transient cholinergic hypofunction by the acute administration

Suppression of non-selected solutions as a possible brain mechanism for ambiguity resolution in the word fragment task completion task.

Brain systems dealing with multiple meanings of ambiguous stimuli are relatively well studied, while the processing of non-selected meanings is less investigated in the neurophysiological literature and provokes controversy between existing theories. It is debated whether these meanings are actively suppressed and, if yes, whether suppression characterizes any task that involves alternative solutions or only those tasks that emphasize semantic processing or the existence of alternatives. The current functional MRI event-related study used a modified version of the word fragment completion task

A Cell-Intrinsic Interferon-like Response Links Replication Stress to Cellular Aging Caused by Progerin.

Hutchinson-Gilford progeria syndrome (HGPS) is a premature aging disease caused by a truncated lamin A protein (progerin) that drives cellular and organismal decline. HGPS patient-derived fibroblasts accumulate genomic instability, but its underlying mechanisms and contribution to disease remain poorly understood. Here, we show that progerin-induced replication stress (RS) drives genomic instability by eliciting replication fork (RF) stalling and nuclease-mediated degradation. Rampant RS is accompanied by upregulation of the cGAS/STING cytosolic DNA sensing pathway and activation of a robust S

Chemical cues from females trigger male courtship behaviour in grasshoppers.

Gomphocerine grasshoppers use species-specific calling songs for sex recognition and mate attraction. In two closely related species, Chorthippus biguttulus and C. mollis, acoustic communication is the only experimentally characterized communication channel that elicits male courtship behaviour. However, courtship in these species involves extensive close-range interactions that are likely to be mediated by other signalling modalities, in particular chemical cues. We developed a bioassay to determine if female cuticular hydrocarbons (CHCs) act as chemical cues that induce courtship behaviour,

Development of urination recognition technology based on Support Vector Machine using a smart band.

The purpose of this study was to explore the feasibility of a urination management system by developing a smart band-based algorithm that recognizes the urination interval of women. We designed a device that recognizes the time and interval of urination based on the patient's specific posture and posture changes. The technology used for recognition applied the Radial Basis Function kernel-based Support Vector Machine, a teaching and learning method that facilitates multidimensional analysis by simultaneously judging the characteristics of complex learning data. In order to evaluate the perform

The dynamic contribution of the high-level visual cortex to imagery and perception.

Mental imagery and visual perception rely on the same content-dependent brain areas in the high-level visual cortex (HVC). However, little is known about dynamic mechanisms in these areas during imagery and perception. Here we disentangled local and inter-regional dynamic mechanisms underlying imagery and perception in the HVC and the hippocampus (HC), a key region for memory retrieval during imagery. Nineteen healthy participants watched or imagined a familiar scene or face during fMRI acquisition. The neural code for familiar landmarks and faces was distributed across the HVC and the HC, alt

Hyperfamiliarity for faces.

OBJECTIVE: To report 4 cases of hyperfamiliarity for faces (HFF) and review 5 previously reported cases. METHODS: We identified cases of HFF from PubMed search and references in prior reports. RESULTS: Three of our 4 cases had pathologic findings that were most extensive in the left temporal lobe. HFF occurred after a tonic-clonic seizure (cases 1 and 3), during simple partial seizures (case 2), and in the setting of an increase in simple partial seizure frequency but not during seizures (case 4). All 9 cases were adults with 1 or more seizures; symptoms first occurred after seizures in 5 ca

The Role of Somatosensory Information in Speech Perception: Imitation Improves Recognition of Disordered Speech.

PURPOSE: Perceptual learning paradigms involving written feedback appear to be a viable clinical tool to reduce the intelligibility burden of dysarthria. The underlying theoretical assumption is that pairing the degraded acoustics with the intended lexical targets facilitates a remapping of existing mental representations in the lexicon. This study investigated whether ties to mental representations can be strengthened by way of a somatosensory motor trace. METHOD: Following an intelligibility pretest, 100 participants were assigned to 1 of 5 experimental groups. The control group received no

Intelligent Data-Driven Model for Diabetes Diurnal Patterns Analysis.

In type 1 diabetes, diurnal activity routines are influential factors in insulin dose calculations. Bolus advisors have been developed to more accurately suggest doses of meal-related insulin based on carbohydrate intake, according to pre-set insulin to carbohydrate levels and insulin sensitivity factors. These parameters can be varied according to the time of day and their optimal setting relies on identifying the daily time periods of routines accurately. The main issues with reporting and adjustments of daily activity routines are the reliance on self-reporting which is prone to inaccuracy

Abnormality of mismatch negativity in response to tone omission in dyslexic adults.

Evidence of abnormalities in the perception of rapidly presented sounds in dyslexia has been interpreted as evidence of a prolonged time window within which sounds can influence the perception of temporally surrounding sounds. We recorded the magnetic mismatch negativity (MMNm) to infrequent tone omissions in a group of six dyslexic adults and six IQ and age-matched controls. An MMNm is only elicited in response to a complete stimulus omission when successive inputs fall within the temporal window of integration (stimulus onset asynchrony (SOA) approximately 160 ms). No MMNm responses were rec

The Variability of Lumbar Sequential Motion Patterns: Observational Study.

BACKGROUND: Physiological motion of the lumbar spine is a topic of interest for musculoskeletal health care professionals since abnormal motion is believed to be related to lumbar complaints. Many researchers have described ranges of motion for the lumbar spine, but only few have mentioned specific motion patterns of each individual segment during flexion and extension, mostly comprising the sequence of segmental initiation in sagittal rotation. However, an adequate definition of physiological motion is still lacking. For the lower cervical spine, a consistent pattern of segmental contribution

Learning to decipher time-compressed speech: Robust acquisition with a slight difficulty in generalization among young adults with developmental dyslexia.

Learning to decipher acoustically distorted speech serves as a test case for the study of language-related skill acquisition in persons with developmental dyslexia (DD). Deciphering this type of input is rarely learned explicitly and does not yield conscious insights. Problems in implicit and procedural skill learning have been proposed as possible causes of DD. Here we examined the learning of time-compressed (accelerated) speech and its generalization to novel materials among young adults with DD compared to typical readers (TD). All participants completed a training session that involved ju

Left Inferior Frontal Gyrus Sensitivity to Phonetic Competition in Receptive Language Processing: A Comparison of Clear and Conversational Speech.

The speech signal is rife with variations in phonetic ambiguity. For instance, when talkers speak in a conversational register, they demonstrate less articulatory precision, leading to greater potential for confusability at the phonetic level compared with a clear speech register. Current psycholinguistic models assume that ambiguous speech sounds activate more than one phonological category and that competition at prelexical levels cascades to lexical levels of processing. Imaging studies have shown that the left inferior frontal gyrus (LIFG) is modulated by phonetic competition between simul

Selective Entrainment of Theta Oscillations in the Dorsal Stream Causally Enhances Auditory Working Memory Performance.

The implication of the dorsal stream in manipulating auditory information in working memory has been recently established. However, the oscillatory dynamics within this network and its causal relationship with behavior remain undefined. Using simultaneous MEG/EEG, we show that theta oscillations in the dorsal stream predict participants' manipulation abilities during memory retention in a task requiring the comparison of two patterns differing in temporal order. We investigated the causal relationship between brain oscillations and behavior by applying theta-rhythmic TMS combined with EEG over

Adaptation of the human visual system to the statistics of letters and line configurations.

By adulthood, literate humans have been exposed to millions of visual scenes and pages of text. Does the human visual system become attuned to the statistics of its inputs? Using functional magnetic resonance imaging, we examined whether the brain responses to line configurations are proportional to their natural-scene frequency. To further distinguish prior cortical competence from adaptation induced by learning to read, we manipulated whether the selected configurations formed letters and whether they were presented on the horizontal meridian, the familiar location where words usually appear

Impaired movement timing in neurological disorders: rehabilitation and treatment strategies.

Timing abnormalities have been reported in many neurological disorders, including Parkinson's disease (PD). In PD, motor-timing impairments are especially debilitating in gait. Despite impaired audiomotor synchronization, PD patients' gait improves when they walk with an auditory metronome or with music. Building on that research, we make recommendations for optimizing sensory cues to improve the efficacy of rhythmic cuing in gait rehabilitation. Adaptive rhythmic metronomes (that synchronize with the patient's walking) might be especially effective. In a recent study we showed that adaptive m

Body schema learning for robotic manipulators from visual self-perception.

We present an approach to learning the kinematic model of a robotic manipulator arm from scratch using self-observation via a single monocular camera. We introduce a flexible model based on Bayesian networks that allows a robot to simultaneously identify its kinematic structure and to learn the geometrical relationships between its body parts as a function of the joint angles. Further, we show how the robot can monitor the prediction quality of its internal kinematic model and how to adapt it when its body changes-for example due to failure, repair, or material fatigue. Haptic face identification activates ventral occipital and temporal areas: an fMRI study.

Many studies in visual face recognition have supported a special role for the right fusiform gyrus. Despite the fact that faces can also be recognized haptically, little is known about the neural correlates of haptic face recognition. In the current fMRI study, neurologically intact participants were intensively trained to identify specific facemasks (molded from live faces) and specific control objects. When these stimuli were presented in the scanner, facemasks activated left fusiform and right hippocampal/parahippocampal areas (and other regions) more than control objects, whereas the latte
