Nurses' perspectives on implementing pediatric palliative care: a qualitative participatory study on the emerging role of the advanced practice nurse.

UNLABELLED: The implementation of Pediatric Palliative Care (PPC) in hospital settings places considerable demands on nursing staff, particularly during early phases of change. This study explored nurses' experiences, attitudes, and perceived support needs during the early implementation of a PPC concept at a tertiary pediatric hospital in Austria. A qualitative participatory design was applied. Four moderated focus group discussions were conducted with 18 registered nurses working on two pediatric wards where PPC beds were newly introduced. Data were audio-recorded, transcribed verbatim, and

"I can't be the nurse I want to be": Counter-stories of moral distress in nurses' narratives of pediatric oncology caregiving.

As a term used in nursing and other health professions to describe when one is prevented by institutional constraints from pursuing the right course of action, moral distress has gained traction to examine the effects of restructuring on health and social care providers. Using a critical narrative methodology, this paper presents the counter-stories of nine pediatric oncology nurses in Ontario, Canada, whose stories illustrate the embeddedness of their caregiving and moral distress within institutional contexts that leave them stretched thin amongst multiple caregiving and administrative deman

Discrepancies in oral mucositis pain assessment in pediatric oncology: Implications for nursing practice.

OBJECTIVE: Oral mucositis (OM) is a frequent and clinically significant complication of chemotherapy in paediatric oncology, often resulting in substantial pain and functional impairment. Despite its prevalence, discrepancies in pain assessment across informants may contribute to suboptimal symptom management. This study examined differences in OM-related pain ratings among children, parents, and nurses, and evaluated agreement between two validated pain assessment instruments. METHODS: A cross-sectional design was employed with 45 children receiving chemotherapy in a paediatric hemato-oncolo

Nursing Intervention for Outpatient Rehabilitation in Pediatric Patients with Hirschsprung Disease after Colectomy.

OBJECTIVE: The present study was designed to evaluate the effectiveness of a nursing intervention program for outpatient rehabilitation of children with Hirschsprung-associated enterocolitis (HAEC) after radical colectomy for Hirschsprung disease (HD). BACKGROUND: Postoperative outcomes severely affect the quality of life in pediatric HD patients after operation. The improvement in defecation function is regarded as one of the most useful parameters to evaluate the quality of life in HD patients after radical intestinal resection. A close attention should also be paid to the patients' ability

Describing Pediatric Emergency Department Nurse Staffing Models and Unit Characteristics in Pediatric Hospitals in the United States.

INTRODUCTION: Hospitals across the United States experience critical nursing shortages and high turnover across all nursing roles. High nurse vacancy rates present ongoing challenges for emergency departments and may negatively affect patient care. Detrimental effects include overcrowding, longer waiting times, and delayed or missed nursing care. Amid a national nursing crisis, little is known regarding the staffing strategies employed by pediatric emergency departments. The purpose of this study was to provide a foundational description of the current staffing models and unit characteristics

Structural and Organizational Dimensions of Compassion Fatigue in Pediatric Oncology Nursing: A Qualitative Study.

Pediatric oncology nursing is among the highest-intensity care specialties, exposing nurses to repeated child death and sustained emotional investment in family relationships. This occupational burden is a recognized psychosocial risk factor and a driver of compassion fatigue, burnout, and reported intention to leave, yet the organizational and educational determinants of this risk remain poorly captured by existing assessment approaches. This study investigated the lived experiences of nurses caring for terminally ill children in a pediatric onco-hematology unit and hospice ward in central It

A Qualitative Study Assessing Haitian Pediatric Nursing Educational Needs in Port-au-Prince, Haiti.

After Port-au-Prince's 2010 earthquake, Hospital Bernard Mevs (HBM) developed a collaboration with international medical volunteers to provide clinical care and medical resources; that evolved to include medical education as local Haitian staffing developed. There has been limited coordination among volunteers and local providers about ways in which volunteers can best serve the hospital, and literature that addresses how to coordinate volunteer efforts to support the educational needs of the local nursing staff is scant. Our objectives were to complete an educational needs assessment of the m

The Nurse as an Early Warning System: A Longitudinal Surveillance Model in Pediatric Transplantation.

Posttransplant complications in pediatric patients, including rejection, infection, drug toxicity, and nonadherence, are still frequently identified at a late stage, when biomarkers have already changed and clinically meaningful harm to the graft or the patient may already be established. Current follow-up models remain overly dependent on laboratory tests, episodic visits, and reactive responses to overt deterioration, while underrecognizing subtle clinical signals perceived by nurses and caregivers over time. This viewpoint proposes the Nurse-as-Sensor Framework, in which nurses act as clini

Referring Provider Opinions of Pediatric Cardiology Evaluations Performed by Nurse Practitioners.

In the setting of physician shortages, nurse practitioner (NP) roles have evolved, with increasing independence across most healthcare settings. We sought to characterize referring clinician perceptions of NP-performed outpatient pediatric cardiology consultations. We electronically distributed to pediatric and family medicine physicians and NPs in Arkansas our 11-item survey assessing the acceptability of pediatric cardiology consultations being completed by an NP under varying circumstances. Circumstances included seven common referral indications, and the scale offered five answer choices r
