A National Virtual Peer Support Group for Women Veterans Living with Breast Cancer: Lessons from the Field.

Within the Veteran's Health Administration (VHA), peer support specialists (PSSs) have traditionally worked in mental health and behavioral health settings. PSS-facilitated cancer support groups are less common and underused in this setting. The purpose of this study was to understand the acceptability, feasibility, and perceived benefits of a PSS-facilitated peer support group for women veterans with breast cancer. Semi-structured interviews were conducted among veteran participants and health system leaders (HSLs) and were recorded, transcribed, and analyzed using rapid qualitative analysis.

Ethnic group differences in substance use, depression, peer relationships, and parenting among adolescents receiving brief alcohol counseling.

This study examined differences in substance use and related risk factors in a matched sample of Hispanic and White non-Hispanic adolescents receiving brief alcohol counseling. Findings revealed that the White non-Hispanic adolescents reported smoking a higher number of cigarettes per day. The Hispanic adolescents reported perceiving less acceptance from the neighborhood environment in which they live, whereas their parents reported monitoring their teens less than the parents' of White non-Hispanic adolescents. Consistent with the findings found in community samples, the overall findings of t

Peer Rejection and Group Autonomy in the Latency Stage: A Qualitative Analysis of Children's Voices in the Classroom Context.

Background/Objectives: Social rejection during the latency stage is a significant risk factor for children's emotional and social development. Whereas earlier research focused primarily on individual characteristics of rejected children, contemporary perspectives emphasize peer-group processes, including norm formation, hierarchies, and social status structures. Although autonomy has been widely examined as an individual developmental construct, less attention has been given to its possible collective expression within the classroom peer group. This study aimed to explore how children understa

Pilot study of the effectiveness of a telehealth group for improving peer relationships for adolescents with neurofibromatosis type 1.

BACKGROUND: Interventions for social difficulties have not been investigated in the neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) population despite observations of elevated rates of social difficulties. In this pilot study, the effectiveness of a 14-week telehealth PEERS® intervention with nineteen adolescents with NF1 (Mage=13.79 years, SD = 1.32) with social skills difficulties was examined. Measures of social outcomes were completed at three timepoints (before, immediately after, and at 14-week follow-up). RESULTS: Caregiver-reported social-emotional skills, social impairment, caregiver-reported number

Friendship as a moderating factor in the pathway between early harsh home environment and later victimization in the peer group. The Conduct Problems Prevention Research Group.

Two prospective investigations of the moderating role of dyadic friendship in the developmental pathway to peer victimization are reported. In Study 1, the preschool home environments (i.e., harsh discipline, marital conflict, stress, abuse, and maternal hostility) of 389 children were assessed by trained interviewers. These children were then followed into the middle years of elementary school, with peer victimization, group social acceptance, and friendship assessed annually with a peer nomination inventory. In Study 2, the home environments of 243 children were assessed in the summer before

Cooperative Learning Intervention Predicts Changes in Patterns of Friendship Networks Related To Peer Belonging and Cross-Group Ties.

Given the central role of friendships for adolescents social and academic needs and importance of identifying effective interventions to promote these outcomes, the present study examined interpersonal mechanisms through which a cooperative learning intervention changed adolescent friendship network dynamics related to self-perceived peer belonging and rejection. Specifically, we tested whether friendship network selection and influence on peer belonging and rejection varied in the intervention vs. control schools. It also examined whether the intervention promoted selection of intergroup frie

Sensitivity for Diagnosing Group A Streptococcal Pharyngitis from Manufacturers is 10% Higher than Reported in Peer-Reviewed Publications.

OBJECTIVES: Meta-analyses based on peer-reviewed publications report a sensitivity of approximately 85% for rapid antigen streptococcus tests to diagnose group A streptococcal (GAS) pharyngitis. Because these meta-analyses excluded package inserts, we examined the test characteristics of rapid antigen streptococcal tests and molecular methods that manufacturers report in their package inserts. METHODS: We included tests available in the US market (Food and Drug Administration, period searched 1993-2015) and used package insert data to calculate pooled sensitivity and specificity. The effects and challenges of alcohol use disorder peer support service in South Korea: A focus group study.

Although alcohol use disorder (AUD) is associated with a high disease burden due to medical consequences, people with AUD often do not receive appropriate treatment or community health service support. Peer-support services, intended to bridge the gap between patients with AUD and mental health providers have produced successful results. However, the number of studies on peer supporters in South Korea, especially those with AUD, is limited. Therefore, research on the effectiveness or challenges faced by AUD peer supporters in Korea is required to meet the challenges posed by increases in the n

Understanding the association between maltreatment history and adolescent risk behavior by examining popularity motivations and peer group control.

The purpose of the present study was to examine how peer group processes of pressure and control and individual motivations for popularity would add to, and moderate the relationship between, childhood maltreatment and risky behavior in adolescence. A total of 1558 youth (804 girls) from three high schools in Ontario, Canada (M age = 15.02 years, SD = .86) reported on their alcohol use, delinquent behavior, childhood experiences of physical and emotional maltreatment and neglect, peer group processes involving control and individual popularity motivations. Regression analyses showed that, beyo

Peers over the past: prior predation-risk experience does not dictate antipredator responses of individuals in groups.

Animals can use predation-risk experiences to modulate their antipredator responses and improve survival under future risk conditions, a phenomenon known as behavioural carryover. However, different contexts, such as group living, may alter both risks and associated responses for an individual. A group can provide multiple antipredator benefits, including dilution and confusion effects, potentially modifying the payoffs of behavioural carryover. Despite the prevalence of both antipredator strategies, we know little about how group living and behavioural carryover interact. We tested the influe

Assessing Peer Exposure at a Group Level: The Role of Mild-to-Moderate Symptoms in the Transmission of Mental Health Problems.

Background: Preliminary evidence suggests that mental health problems can transmit within adolescent peer social groups. However, prior studies have primarily quantified exposure by counting peers with mental health problems, which cannot precisely reflect the group level density of already affected peers. Moreover, existing evidence predominantly focused on transmission associated with exposure to severe cases, neglecting the more widely prevalent mild-to-moderate cases. Therefore, we explored whether and in what condition exposure to mild-to-moderate cases should be considered along with sev

Social Media Peer Support Groups for Obsessive-Compulsive and Related Disorders: Understanding the Predictors of Negative Experiences.

INTRODUCTION: As social media platforms become commonplace in daily life, online peer support groups have become an increasingly popular resource for people living with physical and mental health issues. Although the benefits of using online peer support groups have been well documented, there can be also be significant risks associated with groups hosted on social media platforms. People living with obsessive-compulsive related disorders may be particularly vulnerable to negative experiences in such groups. METHOD: Using a mixed-methods approach, the aim of the current study was to identify

Focus groups for developing a peer mentoring program to improve self-management in pediatric inflammatory bowel disease.

OBJECTIVES: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) presents challenges for self-management in many areas. A peer mentoring program may offer advantages over other forms of self-management interventions because youth may be more receptive to learning self-management skills from a peer than from a parent or professional. The purpose of the present study was to identify themes from focus groups to inform development of a peer mentoring program for improving self-management in pediatric IBD. METHODS: Focus groups were conducted for youth ages 12 to 17, stratified by age (3 groups; n = 14), young adults

What Is Shared in an Online Peer-Support Group Run by Stroke Survivors? An Exploratory Study With a Participatory Approach.

BACKGROUND: Many stroke survivors face disabilities that can have a substantial lifelong impact on both their own and their significant others' life situations. Online groups on social media can serve as forums for peer support among people sharing a common experience. However, there is limited knowledge about online peer-support groups for people living with the consequences of stroke that are initiated and managed by stroke survivors themselves. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to explore and describe what stroke survivors and their significant others share in posts and comments in a Fa

The impact of peer support groups on the psychological well-being of patients with rheumatoid arthritis: a randomized controlled trial.

Patients with rheumatoid arthritis have higher rates of mental health problems and lower levels of psychological well-being compared to the general population. This study examines the impact of these factors on the psychological well-being of patients with rheumatoid arthritis. In the trial conducted in 2024, a total of 78 patients were enrolled. They first completed a demographic characteristics form and Ryff’s Psychological Well-being Scale. Subsequently, the patients were randomly assigned to either the intervention group or the control group. The control group received routine care, while

Is Peer Support in Group Clinics as Effective as Traditional Individual Appointments? The First Study in Patients With Celiac Disease.

INTRODUCTION: Celiac disease (CD) is common, affecting approximately 1% of the population. The cornerstone of management is a gluten-free diet, with dietetic advice being the key to aiding implementation. The aim of the study was to assess group clinics in comparison with traditional individual appointments. METHODS: Patients with a new diagnosis of CD, confirmed histologically, were prospectively recruited over 18 months in Sheffield, United Kingdom. Patients received either a group clinic or traditional one-to-one appointment, led by a dietitian. Quality-of-life questionnaires were complete

Standardization and adaptability for dissemination of telephone peer support for high-risk groups: general evaluation and lessons learned.

Beyond demonstrated effectiveness, research needs to identify how peer support can be implemented in real-world settings. Telephone peer support offers one approach to this. The purpose of this study is to evaluate telephone peer support provided by trained peer staff for high-risk groups, implemented according to key tasks or functions of the Reciprocal Peer Support model (RPS) providing both standardization and adaptability. The methods used in the study include the review of contact data for years 2015-2016 from telephone peer support services of Rutgers Health University Behavioral Health
