Risk Taking by Adolescents with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD): a Behavioral and Psychophysiological Investigation of Peer Influence.

Adolescents with ADHD demonstrate increased risk-taking behavior (RTB) like substance abuse and dangerous traffic conduct. RTB in adolescence is more likely under peer influence. The current investigation (1) tests the hypothesis that adolescents with ADHD are particularly susceptible to such influence and (2) tests whether groups differed in autonomic reactivity to peer influence. Adolescent boys between 12 and 19 years with (n = 81) and without (n = 99) ADHD performed the Balloon Analogue Risk Task twice. In the peer condition, a highly credible virtual peer manipulation that encouraged risk

Moderators of peer influence effects for adolescents' smoking and vaping norms and outcomes in high and middle-income settings.

BACKGROUND: Peer influence is central to adolescent smoking initiation, yet its impact varies depending on individual and contextual factors. Understanding which moderators (personality, contextual, cultural, and environmental traits) shape these processes can inform more effective prevention strategies. We investigated hypothesized moderators of peer influence for adolescent smoking/vaping norms and other smoking-related outcomes in high and low-middle-income countries (LMICs): Northern Ireland and Bogotá. METHODS: Across 12 schools (n = 1,344, age 12-13 years), participants completed novel

Longitudinal examination of peer and partner influences on gender-specific pathways from child abuse to adult crime.

Research provides increasing evidence of the association of child abuse with adult antisocial behavior. However, less is known about the developmental pathways that underlie this association. Building on the life course model of antisocial behavior, the present study examined possible developmental pathways linking various forms of child abuse (physical, emotional, sexual) to adult antisocial behavior. These pathways include child and adolescent antisocial behavior, as well as adulthood measures of partner risk taking, warmth, and antisocial peer influences. Data are from the Lehigh Longitudin

Social anxiety disorder as a risk factor for alcohol use disorders: a prospective examination of parental and peer influences.

Elucidation of mechanisms underlying the high rates of alcohol use disorder (AUD) remains a pressing clinical and research concern. Despite data indicating that social anxiety disorder (SAD) may be a psychological vulnerability that increases AUD risk, no known prospective research has examined underlying mechanisms. Given the nature of SAD, social support and peer alcohol use may be implicated. The present study set out to clarify the SAD-AUD link in several ways using a prospective dataset comprised of 1803 (47% female) young adults at T1, 1431 of whom were assessed again approximately 3 yea

Peer and familial influences on the association between behavioral inhibition and trajectories of social anxiety symptoms across adolescence.

Behavioral inhibition (BI) is one of the most reliable predictors of social anxiety, and both peers and family members play a key role in shaping this association. In a sample of adolescents enriched for elevated BI and social anxiety symptoms, we examined (1) the moderating role of familial and close peer relationship qualities on associations between BI, concurrent social anxiety symptoms, and social anxiety symptom trajectories and (2) indirect effects of adolescent BI on social anxiety through close peer and familial relationship qualities. Furthermore, we examined sex differences in these

Violence and Depression Among Young Women Experiencing Homelessness: The Social Context of the Street Environment and the Influence of Peers.

Young women experiencing homelessness face many significant risks that can be detrimental to their long-term well-being. Many suffer from histories of child abuse, and most experience further exploitation after they run away or leave home. Using combined survey data from 230 young women experiencing homelessness in the United States, the purpose of this paper is to examine the prevalence of different types of sexual and physical exploitation, as well as risk factors associated with sexual assault on the street, and depressive symptoms among young women experiencing homelessness. Descriptive re

Factors Influencing Adolescents' Use of Anonymous Reporting Systems to Seek Help for Peers in Severe Mental Distress.

PURPOSE: Adolescent mental distress, including suicidality, is a pressing public health problem facing contemporary adolescents. School-based programs facilitate early identification and intervention, yet barriers remain in disclosing peer mental health issues due to potential social repercussions. Technology-facilitated reporting systems (TFRS) used in >50% of K-12 schools offer a discreet reporting option, yet little is known about factors that influence youths' use of TFRS. METHODS: This study evaluates the use of TFRS among middle school adolescents who know peers in severe mental distres

Family process and peer deviance influences on adolescent aggression: longitudinal effects across early and middle adolescence.

Beginning in sixth grade at an average age of 11.9 years, 416 adolescents and their parents participated in 4 waves of data collection involving family observations and multiple-reporter assessments. Ecological theory and the process-person-context-time (PPCT) model guided the hypotheses and analyses. Lagged, growth curve models revealed that family hostility and peer deviance affiliation predicted adolescent aggression in the subsequent year. Family warmth played only a minor role in protecting against adolescent aggression. In hostile or low-warmth families, peer deviance affiliation linked

With friends like these…: peer delinquency influences across age cohorts on smoking, alcohol and illegal substance use.

BACKGROUND: Discussions and debate about youth smoking, alcohol use, and illegal substance use (collectively referred to as youth substance use) continue to receive wide attention among researchers, policymakers, and the general public. Previous research has suggested that peer delinquency is a particularly strong correlate of youth substance use. The current study focuses on the influence of delinquent peers on substance use, and how peer delinquency influences change across age cohorts of youth. METHOD: The current study examines multiple correlates for youth substance use in a sample of 8,

The influence of athletic identity, coach-athlete relationship quality, and peer climate on emotional resilience in injury-prone sports.

INTRODUCTION: Athletes competing in injury-prone sports are routinely exposed to physical risk and psychological strain, making psychological adaptation a critical yet underexplored issue in sport psychology. Drawing on identity-based perspectives, conservation of resources theory, and self-determination theory, this study examined whether athletic identity influences psychological adaptation through emotional resilience and whether coach-athlete relationship quality and peer climate strengthen this process. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 482 athletes participating in i

Prescription drug misuse and risk factors among Somali adolescents: a qualitative study exploring peer influence, stress, and academic pressure.

BACKGROUND: Drug misuse among adolescents is a growing public health concern in Somalia, with prescription drug abuse emerging as a significant issue. This behavior is influenced by a complex interplay of psychological, social, and environmental factors, including peer pressure, academic stress, and community dynamics. Understanding these factors is essential for designing effective interventions to mitigate the rising trend of substance abuse among Somali youth. METHODS: This qualitative study employed in-depth interviews (IDIs) and key informant interviews (KIIs) to explore the motivations

Sustainability & social segmentation in social media contagion: A mathematical and computational study on dual effects of individual needs & peer influence.

Addiction to internet-based social media has increasingly emerged as a critical social problem, especially among young adults and teenagers. Based on multiple research studies, excessive usage of social media may have detrimental psychological and physical impacts. In this study, we are going to explore mathematically the dynamics of social media addiction behavior and explore the determinants of compulsive use of social media from the dual perspectives of individual needs or cravings and peer-related factors or peer pressure. The theoretical analysis of the model without the peer pressure eff

Subthalamic high-frequency deep brain stimulation reduces addiction-like alcohol use and the possible negative influence of a peer presence.

RATIONALE: The immediate social context significantly influences alcohol consumption in humans. Recent studies have revealed that peer presence could modulate drugs use in rats. The most efficient condition to reduce cocaine intake is the presence of a stranger peer, naive to drugs. Deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the Subthalamic Nucleus (STN), which was shown to have beneficial effects on addiction to cocaine or alcohol, also modulates the protective influence of peer's presence on cocaine use. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to: 1) explore how the presence of an alcohol-naive stranger peer aff

Influence of deviant peer affiliation on adolescent depression in China: roles of self-deviant behavior, academic performance, and academic stress.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent depression is a growing concern that warrants increased attention, and the peer effect based on peer networks has a fundamental influence on adolescent depression. However, little is known about the roles of self-deviant behavior and academic performance and stress in the influence of deviant peer affiliation on adolescent depression. METHODS: Based on the China Education Panel Survey data from 2013 to 2015 (n = 8311), this study explored the impact of deviant peer affiliation on adolescent depression. Additionally, it investigated the potential mediation and moderation

Inter-generational impact: Exploring the influence of older sister-in-law's contraceptive choices on her peer contraception adoption in India.

OBJECTIVE: Social network-based reproductive decisions are critical. This study compares the effect of an older peer contraceptionuse on her younger peer's use, as they share the closest social network within the household, and tend to influence one another for reproductive decisions. In this study we considered peers as two sister-in-law living in the same household. METHODS: We used data from the fifth round of National Family Health Survey which was conducted between the year 2019 and 2021. We deployed multinomial multivariable logistic regression to find the association between older wome

Study on adolescents' smoking intentions: the influence of peer smoking and the mediating roles of beliefs and attitudes toward smoking behavior.

BACKGROUND: Reducing adolescents' smoking rates is an important priority for global public health. Smoking intention is the most direct factor influencing smoking behavior and the best predictor of its occurrence. Smoking intention is influenced by peer smoking behavior, which strengthens adolescents' willingness to smoke. Understanding adolescents' smoking intentions and their influencing factors will be a key component of future tobacco control. This study aims to explore the relationship between peer smoking and adolescents' future smoking intentions, investigate the potential roles of beli

Different peers influence different behaviors: Conformity to best friends and status-based norms across the transition into adolescence.

Friends and popular peers are important sources of influence across the transition into adolescence. The present study examines the assertion that the magnitude of influence from friends and popularity-based norms varies across behavioral domains. Participants were 543 (268 girls, 275 boys) students from 29 5th-8th grade (ages 10 to 14) classrooms in three Lithuanian public middle schools. Most were ethnic Lithuanians. Self-reports of socioemotional adjustment, including emotional problems, lack of emotional clarity, problem behaviors, social media use, and weight concerns, were collected in t

I Am My Peers: How Social Ties Influence E-Cigarette Attitudes, Policy Support, and Use.

BACKGROUND: Electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) use is increasingly prevalent among youth and young adults, particularly college and university students. This is a population for whom e-cigarette use is not recommended due to potential health risks, including nicotine addiction and long-term respiratory effects. Social networks play a crucial role in shaping attitudes toward e-cigarettes and influencing use behaviors. However, the relative influence of different social ties-parents, siblings, and friends-on e-cigarette attitudes and use remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: This study utilizes data from
