Advocacy counterstrategies to tobacco industry interference in policymaking: a scoping review of peer-reviewed literature.

BACKGROUND: There has been remarkable tobacco control progress in many places around the globe. Tobacco industry interference (TII) has been identified as the most significant barrier to further implementation of the World Health Organization Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC). Civil society has been recognised as a key actor in countering TII. While TII has been extensively studied for several decades now, there is little research that focuses on counteractions to limit it and their effectiveness to do so. This scoping review seeks to map the peer-reviewed literature on civil

Current practices in peer review in German radiation oncology: a nationwide survey.

BACKGROUND: Clinical peer review (PR) is a structured process in which medical professionals evaluate the quality of their colleagues' work to ensure compliance with healthcare standards. In radiation oncology (RO), intra-institutional PR has become established as a key quality assurance (QA) measure to improve treatment safety and effectiveness. While various guidelines and recommendations exist internationally, no uniform PR framework for radiation treatment decision-making and planning has been defined in Germany. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to provide an overview of current PR practices in

How Much Peer Review Is Enough? Rethinking Scholarly Service in Academic Medicine.

Peer review is widely regarded as the cornerstone of scientific publishing, yet it depends on the voluntary efforts of a limited portion of the academic workforce. For clinician-scientists in academic medicine, peer review represents an essential but largely unrecognized component of faculty workload, competing directly with research, clinical care, teaching, and administrative responsibilities. Despite its central role in ensuring scientific rigor, peer review is rarely formally measured, incentivized, or incorporated into promotion and evaluation processes. This commentary examines the growi

Comprehensive Consideration of Ethics in AI-assisted Scientific Writing and Peer Review.

The emergence of large language models and generative artificial intelligence (AI) is driving fundamental transformations in the ecosystem of scholarly publishing and peer review. As manuscript production enters an era of sophisticated technological assistance, it has become imperative to transition from traditional approaches focused on misconduct prevention toward a more proactive ethical framework. We propose a new standard centered on transparency, accountability, and confidentiality, presenting a clear solution to challenges associated with integrating AI into academic discourse. Regardin

Peer and lay health work for people experiencing homelessness: A scoping review.

Homelessness poses complex health obstacles for individuals and communities. Peer and lay health worker programs aim to increase access to health care and improve health outcomes for PEH by building trust and empowering community-based workers. The scope and breadth of peer and lay health worker programs among PEH has not been synthesized. The primary objective of this scoping review is to understand the context (setting, community, condition or disease) encompassing peer and lay health worker programs within the homelessness sector. The secondary objective is to examine the factors that eithe

Peer-reviewed, evidence-based analysis of vitamin D and primary hyperparathyroidism.

BACKGROUND: Research into the actions of vitamin D on the human body has been increasing at an exponential rate, as has understanding of the impact of vitamin D on various aspects of the endocrine system. Primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) is a disease of the endocrine system that can result in debility if not diagnosed. New understanding about the effect of vitamin D on parathyroid hormone regulation may provide an opportunity to better understand the coexistence of PHPT and vitamin D deficiency. METHODS: An evidence-based literature review was based on a PubMed search for research involving

The impact of neuroradiology collaboration in head and neck cancer radiotherapy peer review.

OBJECTIVE: To quantify the impact of neuroradiologist presence on head and neck cancer (HNC) radiotherapy peer review (PR) changes. METHODS: Prospective data were collected from HNC radiotherapy PR meetings; major, minor, and organ at risk (OAR) changes recorded. Differences in changes made with a neuroradiologist present were determined. χ2 tests of statistical significance were performed. Multivariate logistic regression identified potential predictors of changes. RESULTS: Prospective PR was performed in 125/160 (78%) patients undergoing radical (chemo)radiotherapy for HNC between October

Randomised controlled trials of veterinary homeopathy: characterising the peer-reviewed research literature for systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Systematic review of the research evidence in veterinary homeopathy has never previously been carried out. This paper presents the search methods, together with categorised lists of retrieved records, that enable us to identify the literature that is acceptable for future systematic review of randomised controlled trials (RCTs) in veterinary homeopathy. METHODS: All randomised and controlled trials of homeopathic intervention (prophylaxis and/or treatment of disease, in any species except man) were appraised according to pre-specified criteria. The following databases were syste

Indigenous Cancer Survivors in Peer Education and Community Knowledge Exchange: A Scoping Review.

Indigenous people affected by cancer often encounter services that do not reflect their languages, relationships, knowledge systems, or community priorities. Survivor narratives are used in cancer education, yet the educational work undertaken by survivors has not been mapped. This scoping review examined the roles, formats, reported outcomes, and conditions shaping implementation when Indigenous cancer survivors participated in peer education and community knowledge exchange. Following Joanna Briggs Institute guidance and the reporting guideline for scoping reviews, six databases were searche

Peer-coaching interventions for stroke survivors - what works and how: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Peer-led interventions show potential in supporting stroke survivors' recovery, but are described using inconsistent terms and definitions in the current literature. AIMS: Adopting "post-stroke peer-coaching intervention" as the overarching term, this study aims to synthesise the characteristics and outcomes of existing interventions for stroke survivors to develop a standardised definition and a consolidated summary of findings. SUMMARY OF REVIEW: In this scoping review, we searched 6 databases to identify relevant studies from peer-reviewed journal articles published between Ja

Peer-led interventions to reduce alcohol consumption in college students: A scoping review.

Risky alcohol consumption among college students is a significant public health issue. In the college setting, students can collaborate in the implementation of peer-led interventions. To date, evidence of peer-led programmes in reducing harmful alcohol consumption in this population is inconclusive. The aim of the current scoping review is to provide a broad overview by systematically examining and mapping the literature on peer-led interventions for preventing risky alcohol consumption by college students. The specific aims were to (1) identify the underlying focus of the interventions and a

Opinion on Performing Pathology Peer-Review During the Global Pandemic: Challenges and Opportunities.

The coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic has affected business on numerous fronts in unprecedented and abrupt ways. From site closures and local "stay-at-home orders" to travel advisories and restrictions, the day-to-day practice of toxicologic pathology has been impacted dramatically and rapidly. A critical function of Toxicologic Pathologists is performing pathology peer review for nonclinical studies. Traditionally, corroborating the findings of histological assessment could be achieved through shipment of histopathological slides to the peer review pathologist, or by the peer review pathologi

Same-level peer-assisted learning in medical clinical placements: a narrative systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Peer-assisted learning (PAL) is increasingly used in medical education, and the benefits of this approach have been reported. Previous reviews have focused on the benefits of peer tutoring of junior students by senior students. Forms of PAL such as discussion groups and role-playing have been neglected, as have alternative teacher-learner configurations (e.g. same-level PAL) and the effects on other stakeholders, including clinician educators and patients. This review examines the benefits of same-level PAL for students, clinician educators and patients in pre-registration clinical
