Permanent circulatory support systems are required for patients in whom myocardial damage is irreversible and cardiac transplantation is not possible. Two systems are described which provide long term circulatory support: the left ventricular assist system and the total artificial heart. These systems are based on the design of a pusher plate actuated blood pump, driven by a small brushless dc electric motor and rollerscrew driver. The legal hazards of driving under the influence (DUI) are frequently not appreciated by alcohol users. Physicians who treat such patients following collisions are often unaware of the judicial disposition following hospital discharge. We examined the courthouse records of 511 intoxicated drivers involved in collisions and admitted to one Level I Trauma Center to determine if DUI arrests and convictions were obtained. METHODS: We reviewed the records of 24 cases of culture-positive fungal keratitis treated from January 1991 to March 1999 at Wills Eye Hospital. Risk factors, fungal identification, antifungal treatment, and outcomes were evaluated.
