Antibodies to cytochrome P-450 isozyme 3a, the ethanol-inducible isozyme in rabbit liver, were used to determine the role of this enzyme in the microsomal oxidation of alcohols and the p-hydroxylation of aniline. P-450 isozymes, 2, 3b, 3c, 4, and 6 did not crossreact with anti-3a IgG as judged by Ouchterlony double diffusion, and radioimmunoassays indicated a crossreactivity of less than 1%. The pharmacology of methylpentynol and methylpentynol carbamate has been studied. The drugs depressed monosynaptic and polysynaptic reflexes, and exerted weak ganglion and neuromuscular blocking actions. They also produced transitory hypotension, and increase of aortic blood flow. Alcohol dehydrogenase activities were examined in cell-free extracts of 10 representative wine yeast strains having various productivities of higher alcohols (fusel oil). Olfactory integration is important for survival in a natural habitat. However, how the nervous system processes signals of two odorants present simultaneously to generate a coherent behavioral response is poorly understood. The stereoselective reduction of ketones by alcohol dehydrogenase from Thermoanaerobium brockii was studied in organic reaction media. 2-Propanol was used as co-substrate to regenerate the coenzyme NADPH. The enantiomeric excess of the alcohol formed from the ketone decreased during the course of the reaction (from 53 to 0% e.e. in the formation of (R)-2-butanol).
