Serum pepsinogen (PG) testing is widely used as a non-invasive biomarker for gastric atrophy; however, its clinical interpretation varies depending on the severity and distribution of gastritis as well as on the assay methods. Autoimmune gastritis is characterized by markedly decreased PG I levels and PG I/II ratios, along with increased gastrin levels, reflecting profound corpus atrophy. In contrast, Helicobacter pylori-associated atrophy typically shows moderate reductions in PG I levels and PG I/II ratios, with variability according to the extent of antral and corpus involvement. Pepsinogen, secreted from the gastric mucosa, is the precursor of pepsin. It is categorized as pepsinogen 1 and pepsinogen 2 based on its immunogenicity. The pepsinogen content that can enter the blood circulation through the capillaries of the gastric mucosa is approximately 1% and remains stable all the time. The pepsinogen content in serum will change with the pathological changes of gastric mucosa. Therefore, the level of pepsinogen in serum can play a role in serologic biopsy to reflect the function and morphology of different regions of gastric mucosa and serve as an indicator of gastric

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Gastric cancer develops due to atrophic gastritis induced by Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection. Serum levels of pepsinogen (PG) are known to be excellent markers for evaluating the degree of atrophic gastritis. We investigated whether chronic gastritis could be diagnosed by evaluating serum PG levels.
METHODS: A total of 4483 patients (average age, 49.7 years; 2879 men) were included in this study. Fasting serum samples were collected and anti-H. pylori antibody and PG levels were evaluated. We evaluated the endoscopic atrophy grade or histological extent of gastri

Studies have been made on the isozymic composition of pepsinogen (polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis) and peptidase activity in gastric mucosa of the ground squirrel at various stages of hibernation. Eight pepsinogen isoforms were found in acid-producing zone of the mucosa, pyloric mucosa lacks first three of them, its peptidase activity being two times lower than in other parts of the stomach. During hibernation, no significant changes were found in fractional composition of pepsinogen, peptidase activity being decreased twofold only in the fundulus of the stomach, remaining practically const

The human stomach mucosa contains two main group of gastric proteinases. Both pepsinogen A (PGA) and pepsinogen C (PGC) consist of molecular variants, isozymogens, which can be separated electrophoretically, PGA was found to consist of five isozymogens (Pg1-Pg2), and PGC of two isozymogens (Pg6 and Pg7). Five hundred zymograms were examined and electrophoretic mobility of pepsinogens from patients with gastric cancer was found to be higher than from other gastric diseases. The ratio of isozymogens Pg3 to Pg5 differs in to great extent in various disease. Patients with ulcer disease have this v

This study was aimed to investigate the association of restriction fragment length polymorphisms (RFLPs) for pepsinogen genes with peptic ulcer disease. Eighty unrelated controls, 61 patients with gastric ulcer, and 57 patients with duodenal ulcer were studied. No genetic polymorphisms for pepsinogen A were detected by EcoRI digestion in Japanese subjects but a 100 base pairs insertion-deletion RFLP for the pepsinogen C gene was observed. The allele frequencies of the large (3.6 kilobase EcoRI fragment) and the small fragment (3.5 kilobase EcoRI fragment) were 80.6% and 19.4% respectively in c

Hypervolemia and stimulation of diuresis in dogs was found to decrease the amylolytic activity of the blood plasma and pepsinogen concentration. The number of enzymes bound with blood plasma albumins decreases in hyper-fermentation. The changing connexion of the plasma albumins with the enzymes entails a renal (as well as extrarenal) extraction of the enzymes from the organism and maintenance of their relatively constant concentration and activity in the blood.

No data are available on the localization of Pepsinogen A (PGA = PG I) and Pepsinogen C (PGC = PG II) positive cells in Barrett's epithelium. Endoscopic biopsy specimens were taken from the columnar epithelium from 23 patients (n = 93), and in addition from the cardia from eight healthy control subjects (n = 38). The tissue was stained by the immunoperoxidase technique with specific anti-pepsinogen antisera, and double immunostained for PGA and PGC. In the Barrett's epithelium PGA was found in 28 out of 93 biopsy specimens (30.1%) and PGC in 55 out of 93 (59.1%). Chief cells always stained bot

The esophagus of Rana catesbeiana yielded 20-40 X 10(6) peptic cells that were greater than 80% pure by immunostaining, greater than 90% viable, and had low basal pepsinogen and lactic dehydrogenase (LDH) release. Cellular responses to agents that bypass receptors and act directly on cell messenger systems have been compared with receptor-mediated activation. Pepsinogen secretion was stimulated dose dependently by A23187, the phorbol ester 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol 13-acetate (TPA), and forskolin. The combination of any two or all three agents at optimum effective concentrations stimulated sec

We measured serum PG I levels by an Elisa technique before and after stimulation with pentagastrin in 260 patients (161 males and 99 females). The serum levels were correlated to basic acid output (BAO), maximum acid output (MAO) and peak acid output (PAO). The correlation coefficient between serum PG I and PAO varied between -0.482 and 0.744 depending on the diagnosis. This indicates that a simple measurement of PG I cannot replace the pentagastrin test in estimating gastric acid secreting capacity. However, since all patients who were achlorhydric had a serum PG I level of less than 50 micro

Pepsinogen plays a crucial role in the gastric digestion of carnivorous fish. Piezo signals in the stomach, which are typically associated with digestion through mechanical forces resulting from food intake, have been extensively investigated in mammals but have received comparatively limited attention in fish. To explore the physiological characteristics of gastric digestion and the regulatory mechanism of pepsinogen and piezo secretion in carnivorous fish, we investigated the gastric contents of juvenile mandarin fish (5.83 ± 1.32 g, 6.60 ± 0.46 cm) following feeding and developed a mathemat

BACKGROUND: Gastric GISTs (GG) are significant mesenchymal tumors. No biomarker has been identified for GG detection. We first observed mucosal atrophy surrounding GG tumors, leading to the hypothesis that localized atrophy may alter serum pepsinogen (PG) levels. Therefore, we developed a machine learning (ML) model incorporating serum PG levels and clinical features to predict GG and differentiate it from gastric cancer (GC).
METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed GG and GC patients with tested PG levels before medical intervention. Seven ML algorithms were assessed, and feature importance was

Simple objective modalities are required for evaluating suspected autoimmune gastritis (AIG). This cross-sectional study aimed to examine whether pepsinogen, gastrin, and endoscopic findings can predict AIG. The diagnostic performance of endoscopic findings and serology in distinguishing AIG was evaluated. AIG was diagnosed in patients (N = 31) with anti-parietal cell antibody and/or intrinsic factor antibody positivity and histological findings consistent with AIG. Non-AIG patients (N = 301) were seronegative for anti-parietal cell antibodies. Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis

Endoscopic findings of the background gastric mucosa are important in the Helicobacter pylori-seroprevalent population. It is strongly correlated not only with the risk of gastric cancer, but also with the excretion ability of gastric mucosa cells. In noninfected subjects, common endoscopic findings are regular arrangement of collecting venules, chronic superficial gastritis, and erosive gastritis. In cases of active H. pylori infection, nodularity on the antrum, hemorrhagic spots on the fundus, and thickened gastric folds are common endoscopic findings. The secreting ability of the gastric mu
