Imbalances in gut microbiota composition during ulcerative colitis (UC) indicate a role for the microbiota in propagating the disorder. A comparison of three different commercial media was made to assess their recovery of anaerobic organisms from the blood stream. The three media used were the 50-ml brain heart infusion broth with added CO2 (Pfizer), the 50-ml Thiol broth with added CO2 (Difco), and the 50-ml prereduced, supplemented peptone broth in a Vacutainer tube with added CO2 (Becton-Dickinson). Micrococcus luteus produced a diffusible, esterase inhibitory factor (EIF) which inhibited the activity of cutaneous diphtheroid esterases on Tween 80-CaCl2 agar media. Esterases of Staphylococcus, Micrococcus, Bacillus, and Serratia were not susceptible. Submerged cultures were used to identify growth-limiting nutrients by Antrodia cinnamomea strains. The mycelial biomass and EPS production by A. cinnamomea BCRC 35396 were markedly higher than other A. cinnamomea strains. Physiological saline was found to be very detrimental to the viability of Listeria monocytogenes. The LD(50) value was substantially reduced when peptone was used as the suspending fluid rather than saline. Normal splenic tissue was not inhibitory to the survival of Listeria. In experimentally infected mice, L. monocytogenes survived for 8 days in the peritoneal cavity and for at least 11 days in the spleen.
