Peracetic acid activation by mechanochemically sulfidated zero valent iron for micropollutants degradation: Enhancement mechanism and strategy for extending applicability.

In this study, mechanically sulfidated microscale zero valent iron (S-ZVI) was found to effectively activate the peracetic acid (PAA) with a result of almost complete degradation of six micropollutants within 10 min under neutral conditions, and > 95% sulfamethoxazole (SMX) removal after six cycles. Reactive oxidized species (ROS) including HO•, carbon-centered radicals, and Fe(IV) were generated in the S-ZVI/PAA system, while HO• was the main contributor towards micropollutants degradation. This study clearly revealed that enhancement of the electron donating ability of ZVI by the formed cond

Inactivation of Prions by Low-Temperature Sterilization Technology Using Vaporized Gas Derived from a Hydrogen Peroxide-Peracetic Acid Mixture.

Prion diseases are proteopathies that cause neurodegenerative disorders in humans and animals. Prion is highly resistant to both chemical and physical inactivation. Here, vaporized gas derived from a hydrogen peroxide-peracetic acid mixture (VHPPA) was evaluated for its ability to inactivate prion using a STERIACE 100 instrument (Saraya Co., Ltd.). Brain homogenates of scrapie (Chandler strain) prion-infected mice were placed on a cover glass, air-dried, sealed in a Tyvek package, and subjected to VHPPA treatment at 50-55 °C using 8% hydrogen peroxide and <10% peracetic acid for 47 min (standa

Erratum to: the acaricidal efficacy of peracetic acid and deltamethrin against the fowl tick, Argas persicus, infesting laying hens.

The fowl tick, Argas persicus (Oken), is of veterinary importance as a parasite of poultry and wild birds. The antitick efficacy, in vitro and in vivo, of peracetic acid (PAA) and deltamethrin (DMT) was tested separately against A. persicus through the dipping technique. PAA (0.5%) was highly efficient against soft tick larvae (A. persicus), resulting in 100 % mortality after 2 min. The lethal concentrations LC₅₀ and LC₉₅ were 0.310 and 0.503 %, respectively. The lethal time values LT₅₀ and LT₉₅ were 5.34 and 40.00 min, respectively, after treatment with PAA (0.25%). Two minutes after exposure

The reactivity of organic radicals in the performic, peracetic, perpropionic acids-based advanced oxidation process: A case study of sulfamethoxazole.

Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) based on peracetic acid (PAA) displayed great potential in removing emerging contaminants by generating HO• and organic radicals. Performic and perpropionic acids (PFA and PPA) also act as disinfectants, but their application potential has not been investigated yet. Here, we investigated the degradation mechanism and kinetics of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) by HO•, RC(O)O• species (including HC(O)O•, CH3C(O)O• and CH3CH2C(O)O•) and RC(O)OO• species (including HC(O)OO•, CH3C(O)OO• and CH3CH2C(O)OO•). The results show that the calculated reaction rate constants of S

Dose-response assessment of Bacillus anthracis surrogate spore inactivation on different surfaces and environmental conditions using pH-adjusted peracetic acid.

A deliberate release of environmentally persistent Bacillus anthracis spores in an urban setting could cause severe public health, economic, and environmental disruption. Rapid, scalable decontamination methods are essential for effective recovery and minimizing long-term impacts. This requires understanding how decontaminant dose, surface type, and environmental conditions influence spore inactivation. The present study evaluates bespoke peracetic acid (PAA) formulations for inactivating Bacillus thuringiensis HD-1 cry- spores, a surrogate for B. anthracis. Urban surfaces nebulized with B. th

Removal of Sulfonamide Antibiotics in Peracetic Acid-Mediated Natural Polyphenol Systems via an Overlooked Polymerization Pathway: Role of ortho-Quinones.

Natural polyphenols can be oxidized into reactive quinones, which might play a key role in the removal of specific contaminants in natural polyphenol-related advanced oxidation processes (AOPs). In this study, peracetic acid (PAA) was employed in combination with natural protocatechuic acid (PCA) to remove sulfonamide antibiotics (SAs) from water. More than 95% removal of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) and other SAs was observed in the PCA/PAA system, and neutral pH conditions (5.0-8.0) were more conducive to the removal of SMX. The PCA/PAA system exhibited a great anti-interference ability against co

Impact of precursor-derived peracetic acid on post-weaning diarrhea, intestinal microbiota, and predicted microbial functional genes in weaned pigs.

Post-weaning diarrhea affects piglets in the nursery phase of production, leading to a substantial impact both at the farm and financial levels. The multifactorial etiology of this disease includes housing conditions, pig genetics, microbial composition, and metagenomic assets. Among the common therapeutic approaches, the widely used zinc oxide underwent a European Union ban in 2022 due to its negative environmental impact and correlation to increased antimicrobial resistance. During this study, we have tested two levels of inclusion of the potential antimicrobial alternative peracetic acid, d

Chloride reinforces nanowire electrocatalytic peracetic acid filtration for inactivating oxidant-resistant bacteria: A sequential PAA reduction and chloride oxidation pathway.

Chlorination often fails to inactivate oxidant-resistant bacteria protected by extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) while generating disinfection by-products (DBPs). Although electrochemical activation of peracetic acid (PAA) provides a low-DBPs pathway with diverse reactive species for water disinfection, it is hindered by the persistence of residual organic acids. Herein, we reported a nanowire electrochemical strategy that leveraged ubiquitous chloride ions in water to integrate physical electroporation, reductive PAA activation, and oxidative chlorine production, enabling efficient and

Magnetic Fe/S-modified porous carbon activates peracetic acid for emerging contaminant removal: Unveiling active sites and structure-activity relationships.

Peracetic acid (PAA) activation by carbon-based materials is a promising technology for water decontamination. However, its efficiency is hindered by the ambiguous identification of active sites and corresponding reactive species. Herein, magnetic biochar modified with Fe/S phases (Fe/S-BC) were synthesized via a facile hydrothermal-calcination method. The resulting Fe/S-BC remarkably outperforms pristine BC in sulfamethoxazole removal (∼95.5 % within 30 min) via synergistic adsorption and oxidation. This improvement is attributed to the enriched surface functional groups and promoted electroc

The antimicrobial alternative precursor-derived peracetic acid and zinc oxide lead to a sex dependent microbial modulation in weaning piglets.

Several authors described the sexual dimorphism of the gut microbiota in pigs and other animals in relation to sex-specific modulation following interventions such as diet or prebiotics and probiotics. These differences can also influence the host phenotype through the bi-directional pathways of the microbiota-gut-brain axis and could ultimately impact an animal's welfare and well-being. Postweaning diarrhoea is a multifactorial disease that occurs in piglets and is characterised by the sudden diet change from the sow milk to solid feedstuff, with moderate to heavy diarrhoea, accompanied by de

Antibacterial Activity of Brass against Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria following Repeated Exposure to Hydrogen Peroxide/Peracetic Acid and Quaternary Ammonium Compounds.

Copper-containing materials are attracting attention as self-disinfecting surfaces, suitable for helping healthcare settings in reducing healthcare-associated infections. However, the impact of repeated exposure to disinfectants frequently used in biocleaning protocols on their antibacterial activity remains insufficiently characterized. This study aimed at evaluating the antibacterial efficiency of copper (positive control), a brass alloy (AB+®) and stainless steel (negative control) after repeated exposure to a quaternary ammonium compound and/or a mix of peracetic acid/hydrogen peroxide rou

Degradation of antibiotics and profiling of transformation products upon peracetic acid-mediated treatment of electrochlorinated groundwater in a flow-through reactor.

Preventing the formation of hazardous chlorinated transformation products (Cl-TPs) when applying the electrochemical advanced oxidation processes (EAOPs) is a major challenge for ensuring their broader scale-up. In this context, the addition of peracetic acid (PAA) can potentially contribute to reduce the risk of Cl-TPs, but the associated transformation pathways remain insufficiently understood. Here, PAA-mediated electrochlorination process was found to reduce typical Cl-TPs (e.g., chloroform below 60 μg L-1) by 26.9 %∼80.8 %. Under optimized conditions, an innovative PAA-based treatment in

New Insights into Natural Polyphenol-Enhanced Fe(III)/Peracetic Acid System under Acidic pH Conditions: The Overlooked Role of Coexisting Hydrogen Peroxide.

Natural polyphenols have been extensively utilized as reducing agents to enhance contaminant degradation in the Fe(III)/peracetic acid (PAA) system. However, the roles of coexisting hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) remain insufficiently explored. This study, using protocatechuic acid (PCA) as a representative natural polyphenol, demonstrated that contaminant removal within the PCA/Fe(III)/PAA system under acidic pH conditions exhibited two kinetic stages: an initial rapid stage driven by PAA, followed by a slower stage driven by H2O2. The presence of H2O2 facilitated the complete degradation (100%) of

Large-scale phenotypic and genomic analysis of Listeria monocytogenes reveals diversity in the sensitivity to quaternary ammonium compounds but not to peracetic acid.

UNLABELLED: Listeria monocytogenes presents a significant concern for the food industry due to its ability to persist in the food processing environment. One of the factors contributing to its persistence is decreased sensitivity to disinfectants. Our objective was to assess the diversity of L. monocytogenes sensitivity to food industry disinfectants by testing the response of 1,671 L. monocytogenes isolates to quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs) and 414 isolates to peracetic acid (PAA) using broth microdilution and growth curve analysis assays, respectively, and to categorize the isolates in

Effect of peracetic acid on ascospore-forming molds and test microorganisms used for bio-validations of sanitizing processes in food plants.

Industrial sterilization of packaging and filling machineries by peracetic acid (PAA) is a widespread practice. In our study we assessed the resistance to PAA of three ascospore-forming molds (Chaetomium globosum ATCC 6205; Talaromyces bacillisporus SSICA 10915; Aspergillus hiratsukae SSICA 3913) compared to that of Aspergillus brasiliensis ATCC 16404 and Bacillus atrophaeus DSM 675, that are currently used as test microorganisms during industrial bio-validations of food packaging and machineries. Tests were carried out at 40 °C using 1,000 mg/l of PAA, with or without a supporting material (a

Reconstructing lattice Cu2+ to surface Cu0 in CuCo spinel drives reverse charge transfer for selective peracetic acid activation toward water decontamination.

Peracetic acid (PAA)-based advanced oxidation processes hold great promise in wastewater decontamination, but how to precisely regulate the composition of generated reactive species to meet complex realistic water matrices remains challenging. Here we report an exclusion-anchoring strategy to thermodynamically drive the Cu2+ species out of CuCo2O4 lattice by Al3+ ions to form the reconstructed Cu0/Cu1-xAlxCo2O4 structure. Compared to lattice-confined Cu2+, the surface Cu0 continuously supplied delocalized electrons to 3dyz orbital of active Co sites, significantly accelerating the crucial Co(I

[Evaluation of Decontamination Methods using Peracetic Acid for Shiga Toxin-producing Escherichia coli on the Surface of Beef Sub-primal Cuts].

Peracetic acid formulation has received much attention in recent years as a surface disinfectant for beef. There are many reports on the bactericidal effect of peracetic acid formulation on beef surfaces. However, the application method of peracetic acid formulation aiming at the complete removal of Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) from the surface of sub-primal cuts has not been evaluated. The objective of this study was to determine the condition under which peracetic acid formulation can be used to completely remove STEC from the surface of sub-primal cuts of beef. The effect of

Inactivation of Desiccation-Resistant Salmonella on Apple Slices Following Treatment with ε-Polylysine, Sodium Bisulfate, or Peracetic Acid and Subsequent Dehydration.

Salmonella is capable of surviving dehydration within various foods, such as dried fruit. Dried fruit, including apple slices, have been the subject of product recalls due to contamination with Salmonella. A study was conducted to determine the fate of Salmonella on apple slices, following immersion in three antimicrobial solutions (viz., ε-polylysine [epsilon-polylysine or EP], sodium bisulfate [SBS], or peracetic acid [PAA]), and subsequent hot air dehydration. Gala apples were aseptically cored and sliced into 0.4 cm thick rings, bisected, and inoculated with a five-strain composite of desi
