Hispanic youth are at risk for experiencing depressive symptoms and smoking cigarettes, and risk for depressive symptoms and cigarette use increase as Hispanic youth acculturate to U.S. culture. The mechanism by which acculturation leads to symptoms of depression and cigarette smoking is not well understood. The present study examined whether perceived discrimination explained the associations of acculturation with depressive symptoms and cigarette smoking among 1,124 Hispanic youth (54% female). Youth in Southern California completed surveys in 9th-11th grade. Separate analyses by gender show

This study investigates the association between self-reported physical and mental health and both perceived racial discrimination and skin color in African American men and women. We used data from the longitudinal coronary artery risk development in young adults study (CARDIA) in African American men and women (n=1722) in the USA. We assessed self-reported mental and physical health status and depressive symptoms at the Year 15 (2000-2001) follow-up examination using the Medical Outcomes Study Short Form (SF-12) and the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression scale. Skin color was measure

People who use drugs (PWUDs) are at increased risk for several medical conditions, yet they delay seeking medical care and utilize emergency departments (EDs) as their primary source of care. Limited research regarding perceived discrimination and PWUDs' use of health care services exists. This study explores the association between interpersonal and institutional racial/ethnic and drug use discrimination in health care settings and health care utilization among respondents (N = 192) recruited from methadone maintenance treatment programs (36%), HIV primary care clinics (35%), and syringe exch

OBJECTIVES: This study sought to examine associations between U.S. adolescents' perceived racism and discrimination (PRD) at school and current substance use.
METHODS: Data were drawn from the Adolescent Behaviors and Experiences Survey (ABES), a probability sample of U.S. high school students in 2021 (n = 7705). Multivariable regression models were conducted to examine associations of PRD with current (past 30-day) use of tobacco products, marijuana, alcohol, and prescription opioid misuse. Interaction effects of PRD and demographic factors were tested.
RESULTS: Among participants in the 20

PURPOSE: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) have been linked to increased risk of dissociative experiences. Evidence suggests that Black Americans report higher levels of dissociative experiences than their White counterparts, yet the factors contributing to this disparity are not well understood. The purpose of this study was to examine the moderating effect of perceived racial discrimination on the relationship between ACEs and dissociative experiences among a sample of adults from predominantly Black communities in rural Alabama.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Participants completed paper-and-pe

Exposure to war-related trauma and post-migration discrimination are significant risk factors for mental health problems among refugees and migrants. Understanding the mechanisms linking these experiences to psychological outcomes is essential for informing targeted interventions in host countries. In the context of resettlement, this study examined whether perceptions of injustice and physiological stress regulation, measured through resting heart rate variability (HRV), mediated the relationship between trauma, perceived discrimination, and mental health problems. Data were collected from 98

Chronic musculoskeletal pain (CMP) is highly prevalent, frequently associated with negative health outcomes, and disproportionately impacts Black Americans. Perceived racial and ethnic discrimination has emerged as a factor that may influence the experience of chronic pain in this population. Identifying modifiable psychosocial factors that influence the link between perceived discrimination and pain and that can be directly targeted in treatment is vital to reducing the disproportionate burden of CMP among Black individuals. The present study examines the moderating role of five risk factors

Job discrimination, a social stressor, may lead to sleep health disparities among workers; yet, limited research has examined this relationship and specific sources of job discrimination. We used a US sample of working women (n = 26,085), participants in the Sister Study (2008-2016), to examine the associations of perceived job discrimination due to sex, race, age, health conditions, and/or sexual orientation with sleep health. Cross-sectionally, linear or logistic regression models revealed that each source of job discrimination was independently associated with different sleep problems after

Stigma and discrimination toward individuals experiencing homelessness and mental disorders remain pervasive across societies. However, there are few longitudinal studies of stigma and discrimination among homeless adults with mental illness. This study aimed to identify the two-year group trajectories of stigma and discrimination and examine the predictive role of mental health characteristics among 414 homeless adults with mental illness participating in the extended follow-up phase of the Toronto At Home/Chez Soi (AH/CS) randomized trial site. Mental health-related perceived stigma and disc

RATIONALE: One-third of U.S. adults have an activity-limiting health condition and this proportion increases with age. However, it is unclear whether functional limitation renders one vulnerable to institutional and interpersonal discrimination, and whether this vulnerability differs over the life course. Stigma theories suggest disability would be more discrediting to younger persons relative to older adults, as it violates cultural norms and expectations regarding able-bodied working-age adults.
OBJECTIVE: We evaluate whether U.S. adults with functional impairment report higher levels of pe

The Social Cognition Psychometric Evaluation (SCOPE) study consists of a battery of eight tasks selected to measure social-cognitive deficits in individuals with schizophrenia. The battery is currently in a multisite validation process. While the SCOPE study collects basic demographic data, more nuanced race-related factors might artificially inflate cross-cultural differences in social cognition. As an initial step, we investigated whether race, independent of mental illness status, affects performance on the SCOPE battery. Thus, we examined the effects of perceived discrimination and experim

Perceived discrimination is a risk factor for mental health problems among sexual minority individuals. An increasing number of research studies have investigated the mechanisms through which stigma-related stressors such as perceived discrimination are linked with adverse mental health outcomes for sexual minority populations. The integrative mediation framework proposed by Hatzenbuehler (2009) underscores the importance of identifying mediators in the association between stigma-related stressors and mental health outcomes. This study tested 3 mediators--expectations of rejection, anger rumin

BACKGROUND: The migration of adult children significantly affects older adults' lives in various ways. This study explores the association between adult children's migration and perceived discrimination among older adults left behind in India.
METHODS: The study utilises nationally representative data from the Longitudinal Ageing Study in India (LASI) Wave 1 conducted during 2017-18. The final sample included 24,747 older people aged 60 & above living with non-migrant, internal migrant, and international migrant children. Bivariate analysis was used to estimate the prevalence of perceived dis

Prior research suggests that immigrant generation, perceived discrimination, and identity shape Muslim American immigrants' mental health, but these factors have rarely been examined simultaneously, especially not while comparing different immigrant generations of Muslim Americans directly to each other and to Muslim Americans with no recent history of immigration. We examined the relationships between these factors and depression and anxiety symptoms in a sample of 157 Muslim American college students (range = 17-48; Mage = 21.16, SD = 3.69; 75.2% female; immigrant generations: 23.6% first, 5

BACKGROUND: Stress indicators, including perceived discrimination and depression, have been linked with chronic diseases. Studies have also linked persistent prescription opioid use (PPOU) with depression. With increasing numbers of opioid overdose deaths among Hispanics (predominantly Puerto Rican) in Massachusetts, investigating how perceived discrimination and depression affect PPOU is relevant to public health efforts to address the opioid crisis. This study examined the effect of depression on PPOU and whether depression mediated the association between perceived discrimination and PPOU a

BACKGROUND: Perceived discrimination has been found to increase substance use vulnerability among adolescent populations. However, less is known about individual level factors which may moderate this risk.
OBJECTIVES: The aim of the current study is to examine whether two emotion-based personality traits (i.e., distress tolerance and negative urgency) moderates the effect of perceived discrimination on substance use. We hypothesized that high distress tolerance would decrease risk, while high negative urgency would increase risk for substance use as a consequence of discrimination.

Guided by a risk and resilience framework, the current study examined the associations between Latino adolescents' (n = 219; Mage = 14.35; SD = 1.75) perceptions of ethnic discrimination in multiple settings (e.g., online, school) and several domains of adjustment (e.g., mental health, academic), and tested whether developmentally salient cultural assets (i.e., ethnic identity) directly promoted youth adjustment or moderated the negative impact of discrimination on adjustment. Each of the 3 ethnic identity components (i.e., exploration, resolution, affirmation) demonstrated evidence of promoti
