BACKGROUND: The global burden of stillbirth has declined over time. However, the problem is still prominent in South Asian and Sub-Saharan African countries. Ethiopia is one of the top stillbirth-reporting countries worldwide. Despite several measures taken to reduce the burden of stillbirth; the pace of decline was not as good as the post-neonatal death. Thus, this study is aimed at identifying potential factors related to stillbirth in Ethiopia based on nationally reviewed perinatal deaths.
METHOD: The national perinatal death surveillance data were used for this study. A total of 3,814 rev

INTRODUCTION: Perinatal mortality indicates quality of maternal and neonatal care and is high in Nepal. This study was conducted to find out the prevalence of perinatal deaths in a tertiary care center.
METHODS: This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted from July 2017 to June 2018 at KIST Medical College and Teaching Hospital. Details of each perinatal death were filled in predesigned proforma from hospital in-patient records within 24 hours of perinatal death. The total of 1088 cases were selected for the study and convenience sampling was done. Statistical analysis was done with

BACKGROUND: The apolipoprotein E (ApoE) polymorphism has been well studied in the adult human population, in part because the e4 allele is a known risk factor for Alzheimer's disease. Little is known of the distribution of ApoE alleles in newborns, and their association with perinatal brain damage has not been investigated.
METHODS: ApoE genotyping was undertaken in a Scottish cohort of perinatal deaths (n = 261), some of whom had prenatal brain damage. The distribution of ApoE alleles in perinatal deaths was compared with that in healthy liveborn infants and in adults in Scotland.

OBJECTIVE: The object of this study was to use an in-depth peer-review process to determine the maternal mortality ratio at a single urban perinatal center and to identify factors associated with fatal outcomes to elucidate opportunities for preventive measures to reduce the maternal mortality ratio.
STUDY DESIGN: Between 1992 and 1998 all maternal deaths occurring within our perinatal network were identified. A peer-review committee was established to review all available data for each death to determine the underlying cause of death, whether it was related to pregnancy, and whether the deat

Follistatin, an activin-binding protein and activin antagonist in vitro, can bind to heparan sulphate proteoglycans and may function in vivo to present activins to their receptors. In the mouse, follistatin messenger RNA is first detected in the deciduum (on embryonic day 5.5), and later in the developing hindbrain, somites, vibrissae, teeth, epidermis and muscle. In Xenopus laevis, overexpression of follistatin leads to induction of neural tissue. Here we use loss-of-function mutant mice to investigate the function of follistatin in mammals. We find that follistatin-deficient mice are retarde

We determined the main causes of death in 798 perinatal deaths which took place among 32,701 births at several health institutions in Mexico City during the summer of 1984, in accordance with the Wigglesworth Classification. We evaluated the concordance among the codifiers of the causes, with a 92% result (P less than 0.0001). The main causes of death were: conditions associated to asphyxia and prematurity in all health institutions (public assistance, social security and private hospitals). The distribution according to birth weight showed that, in almost 50% of the deaths due to asphyxiation

Perinatal mortality for multiple pregnancy remains at least 5 times the rate for singleton births. The major causes are neonatal deaths due to gross immaturity before 30 weeks' gestation, and stillbirths due to intrauterine growth retardation at all gestations, but especially after 32 weeks. Sixty four per cent of perinatal losses before 30 weeks' gestation occur before 26 weeks, highlighting the need to commence prophylactic measures earlier than usually recommended. The perinatal mortality in infants in multiple births weighing more than 2,500g is the same as that of singletons, but is 10 ti

Changes in the management of 1120 twin pregnancies delivered in Tampere University Central Hospital during the years 1964-1985 were studied, together with changes in the pattern of perinatal deaths. Perinatal mortality decreased from 7.4% in 1964-68 to 3.5% in 1981-85. There were no significant changes in stillbirths. The decrease of perinatal mortality resulted from a reduction in early neonatal deaths, mainly those due to respiratory distress syndrome. Changes in obstetric management include earlier diagnosis by ultrasound, intrapartum monitoring, and an increase in cesarean section rate fro

Abruptio placentae was a common cause of perinatal death in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia in 1974-1975 with a frequency of 5.5/1000 births. This disorder had its peak frequency at term. No abnormalities were found in the placentas to explain the placental abruptions but there were other clues to their genesis. There was a strong association of the fatal abruptions with severe poverty in the mothers. These poor mothers were both undernourished and malnourished during pregnancy. Their fetuses and neonates who died had multiple evidences of undernutrition including a relative undergrowth of adrenals, spl

INTRODUCTION: Ethiopia is one of the countries facing a very high burden of perinatal death in the world. Despite taking several measures to reduce the burden of stillbirth, the pace of decline was not that satisfactory. Although limited perinatal mortality studies were conducted at a national level, none of the studies stressed the timing of perinatal death. Thus, this study is aimed at determining the magnitude and risk factors that are associated with the timing of perinatal death in Ethiopia.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to explore applicability of the Nordic-Baltic perinatal death (PND) classification in a single hospital via evaluation of changes of the preventability of PND over the time period in a tertiary level perinatal care center in Latvia.
METHOD: All PND cases during the period 1995-1999 at a tertiary referral perinatal care center, the Riga Maternity Hospital (RMH), were analyzed using the common Nordic-Baltic PND classification.
RESULTS: The total perinatal mortality rate (PNMR) did not decline at the RMH over the study period. The rate of antenatal and

Chorioangiomatosis is a rare placental vascular disorder that may lead to severe fetal compromise and, in exceptional cases, sudden perinatal death. Its prenatal diagnosis remains challenging because diffuse lesions may lack a discrete placental mass and escape routine ultrasonographic detection. We report a case of sudden unexpected neonatal death occurring immediately after delivery following an apparently uncomplicated full-term pregnancy. External and macroscopic internal postmortem examinations were unremarkable. Histological evaluation revealed signs of chronic intrauterine hypoxia, whil

In a confidential inquiry into perinatal deaths in the Mersey region in 1979 obstetric and paediatric assessors reviewed the circumstances surrounding each case in order to identify any avoidable factors contributing to the death. The area covered by the inquiry was determined by the mother's place of residence and related to 58% of total births (liver births and stillbirths) and 61% of perinatal deaths in the region. Avoidable factors were present in 182 (59%) of the 309 perinatal deaths. Low-birthweight infants (less than or equal to 2500 g) with no maternal complications comprised the large

Background: Perinatal death in Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICUs) represents one of the most emotionally challenging experiences for nurses. While parental bereavement has been widely studied, nurses' experiences in neonatal end-of-life care remain insufficiently explored. Objective: To explore the experiences of NICU nurses facing perinatal death, focusing on emotional, professional, and institutional dimensions of care. Methods: A qualitative study with a hermeneutic phenomenological approach was conducted through ten semi-structured interviews with NICU nurses in a tertiary-level hospita

Following termination of pregnancy for fetal anomaly or unexplained perinatal death (PND), clinical geneticists advise on possible genetic causes and likelihood of recurrence, often with limited use of molecular analysis. In the Australian Genomic Autopsy Study (GAS) cases that were unresolved following standard-of-care investigations underwent exome and/or genome sequencing (ES/GS). This diagnostic before-and-after study measured the changes in clinical management, in terms of the effect on clinical counselling that was provided to parents following ES/GS. Clinicians were surveyed before and

This review considers six main situations in which pathologists are expected to report and interpret placental messages for obstetricians, neonatologists and, indirectly, parents: (1) abortion is the body's corrective response to the embryonic defect suggested by malformed chorionic villi; (2) infection causing chorionic villous inflammation is specific and haematogenous; pathogen identification is mandatory, in contrast to chorioamnionitis caused by increased local immunosuppression allowing indiscriminate bacterial entry; (3) prematurity and (4) intrauterine growth restriction are often asso

BACKGROUND: Perinatal audit and the three-delays model are increasingly being employed to analyse barriers to perinatal health, at both community and facility level. Using these approaches, our aim was to assess factors that could contribute to perinatal mortality and potentially avoidable deaths at Rwandan hospitals.
METHODS: Perinatal audits were carried out at two main urban hospitals, one at district level and the other at tertiary level, in Kigali, Rwanda, from July 2012 to May 2013. Stillbirths and early neonatal deaths occurring after 22 completed weeks of gestation or more, or weighin

MicroRNA-125b, the first microRNA to be identified, is known to promote cardiomyocyte maturation from embryonic stem cells; however, its physiological role remains unclear. To investigate the role of miR-125b in cardiovascular biology, cardiac-specific miR-125b-1 knockout mice were generated. We found that cardiac-specific miR-125b-1 knockout mice displayed half the miR-125b expression of control mice resulting in a 60% perinatal death rate. However, the surviving mice developed hearts with cardiac hypertrophy. The cardiomyocytes in both neonatal and adult mice displayed abnormal mitochondrial
