Uvula Abscess in a Newborn Infant.

Abscesses can be found in several places in the oral cavity, most commonly occurring in peritonsillar and periodontal regions. In this report, the authors described a uvula abscess in a 1-month-old term newborn who was brought to the pediatric outpatient clinic with the complaints of difficulty in sucking-swallowing and refusal to suck at the breast. To the best of the authors' knowledge this is the first report of a uvula abscess in the literature.

Systemic antimicrobials in the treatment of chronic periodontal diseases: a dilemma.

The use of systemic antimicrobials in the treatment of acute and chronic periodontal diseases must be viewed as a dilemma. On the one hand, the approach is attractive because of the microbial nature of periodontal diseases but, on the other hand, evidence of benefit of these agents is equivocal for the majority of periodontal diseases and antimicrobials have the potential to cause harm. The disadvantages of systemic antimicrobials can be grouped under the headings of allergic reactions, superinfection, toxicity, drug interactions, patient compliance and, perhaps of most widespread importance,

Gingival abscess due to an unusual nail-biting habit: a case report.

AIM: Nail-biting is one of the most frequent deleterious oral habits in children. It can result in systemic diseases or oral traumatic lesion. This report describes a case of gingival abscess in a child due to a fingernail-biting habit. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 5-year, 6-month-old female presented gingival swelling and fistula in the primary maxillary left central and right lateral incisors as an unusual sequelae to the periodontal tissues from fingernail-biting. A periodontal curette was used to remove the fragments and to curette the area. After the curettage, an exudate of blood and pus was dra

A case of squamous cell carcinoma presenting as localized severe periodontitis in the maxillary gingiva.

BACKGROUND: Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is the most common malignant neoplasm of the oral cavity. The clinical features of gingival SCC include alveolar bone loss and erythematous lesion. Therefore, gingival SCC sometimes presents as advanced periodontitis. This case report describes a patient diagnosed with gingival SCC after the extraction of molars presenting as being affected by localized severe periodontitis. METHODS: The patient was a 61-year-old man whose chief complaint was pain in the left maxillary area. Clinical and radiographic examinations revealed common findings of a periodon

Periapical abscess progressing to parotitis and descending necrotizing mediastinitis with thoracic abscess in a patient on etanercept: A case report.

Patients on Type 2 biologics, such as etanercept, are at increased risk for aggressive infections. This may be further exacerbated by concomitant systemic corticosteroid use or comorbidities such as diabetes. We report a case of a patient with rheumatoid arthritis on etanercept with poor dentition and periodontal disease, who developed parotitis with peritonsillar abscess and descending necrotizing mediastinitis (DNM) with periaortic abscess arising from a periapical abscess. Morbidity and mortality of such infections is high. A multimodal assessment and treatment team is required to optimize

Oral manifestations of congenital neutropenia or Kostmann syndrome.

Infantile congenital agranulocytosis or Kostmann syndrome is a rare hereditary kind of severe neutropenia. The typical symptoms, which appear since the first days of life, are abscesses located on various parts of the body: ear, cutis, lung and oral cavity. These abscesses are due to an almost total disimmunity typical of the neutropenia. The aim of this article is to describe the most typical signs of this pathology in the oral cavity, reporting a case observed in our department in Florence, Italy. On the basis of the personally observed case and of the review of the literature, it is possibl

Orthodontic treatment as an adjunct to periodontal therapy.

This study discusses the role of orthodontic treatment as an adjunct to the control and treatment of periodontal disease conditions, and describes a clinical case of severe anterior mandibular crowding and periodontal disease followed up for nine years and three months after orthodontic treatment completion. Malocclusion impaired proper dental hygiene, which led to bone loss and development of a periodontal abscess between mandibular canines and lateral incisors. After scaling and root planing, orthodontic treatment was initiated with extraction of the four second premolars, to correct the def

A Pulmonary Abscess Caused by Porphyromonas gingivalis Infection: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Lung abscess is a common disease in respiratory medicine, which is a suppurative lesion caused by various pathogens, and microbiological examination is crucial for the treatment of lung abscess. Due to the widespread use of antibiotics, it is difficult to obtain reliable microbiological evidence through routine tests. There are various pathogens present in the oral cavity, and periodontitis is a risk factor for the formation of lung abscess. Enhancing understanding of lung abscesses caused by Porphyromonas gingivalis and the importance of accurately interpreting NGS reports. This article will

Dental caries and pulpal disease.

This article reviews the diagnostic process, from the first clinically evident stages of the caries process to development of pulpal pathosis. The caries diagnostic process includes 4 interconnected components-staging caries lesion severity, assessing caries lesion activity, and risk assessments at the patient and tooth surface level - which modify treatment decisions for the patient. Pulpal pathosis is diagnosed as reversible pulpitis, irreversible pulpitis (asymptomatic), irreversible pulpitis (symptomatic), and pulp necrosis. Periapical disease is diagnosed as symptomatic apical periodontit

Localized aggressive periodontitis in a six-year-old: a case report.

The purpose of this report was to describe an approach to diagnose and effectively treat a pediatric patient with localized aggressive periodontitis. A 6-year-old female presented with clinical and radiographic evidence of severe attachment loss around several primary teeth. She had no history of systemic disease, periodontal disease, or caries prior to the periodontal abscess that prompted her referral. Routine immunological tests did not reveal any functional defects, but DNA testing for periodontal pathogens revealed the presence of all 8 aggressive periodontal pathogens assayed. Treatment

Oral manifestations of Chediak-Higashi syndrome: A systematic review.

Chediak-Higashi syndrome (CHS) is an autosomal recessive disorder characterized by leukocytes with giant secretory granules and a myriad of clinical features. However, it is unknown whether oral lesions are part of the syndrome or are refractory to systemic treatment. Herein, we integrated the available data published in the literature on the oral manifestations of individuals with CHS. Searches on PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, Scopus, and LILACS were conducted to identify studies published up to March/2022. The Joanna Briggs Institute tool was used for the critical appraisal of studies. Fou

Medical and surgical treatment of peritonsillar, retropharyngeal, and parapharyngeal abscesses.

Peritonsillar, retropharyngeal, and parapharyngeal abscesses are the most common deep cervical fascial space infections. Most develop secondary to an oropharyngeal or dental infection. Additional factors such as smoking and periodontal disease may also contribute to the formation of a peritonsillar abscess. The CT scan is used to confirm the presence of deep neck abscesses, but its accuracy has some limitations. Adequate drainage with accompanying antimicrobial therapy and hydration are the cornerstones of management. Catheter or needle drainage of these abscesses may provide an alternative to

Clinical evaluation of roxithromycin in odontogenic orofacial infections.

An open multicentre clinical trial was conducted in Japan to study the efficacy and safety of roxithromycin in the treatment of acute odontogenic infections. Specimens were collected by needle aspiration only from closed abscesses. The MICs were determined for the pathogens isolated by an agar dilution method. Before and after administration of roxithromycin, whenever possible, a biological safety evaluation was performed. The drug was orally administered in a dosage of 200-400 mg daily, in two divided doses, before the morning and evening meals. Evaluation was objectively performed in accorda
