Multidisciplinary management of skeletal class III malocclusion with unilateral condylar hyperplasia and missing mandibular first molar: a case report.

Condylar hyperplasia (CH) is a developmental disorder characterized by excessive and progressive condyle growth, leading to facial asymmetry, malocclusion, and temporomandibular joint dysfunction. The timing and selection of treatment approaches are crucial for optimal outcomes. In this case, we implemented a four-year conservative management strategy, comprising two years of passive observation followed by two years of pre-surgical orthodontics, enabling conservative treatment while avoiding the potential risks. The long-term absence of the mandibular first molar resulted in alveolar ridge at

Electrospun PCL-based nanofibers Arrabidaea chica Verlot - Pterodon pubescens Benth loaded: synergic effect in fibroblast formation.

The guided tissue regeneration (GTR) technique can be applied in dentistry and other medical specializations, such as orthopedics. In modern dentistry, GTR has been used in periodontics and implantology to treat periodontal defects, to reconstruct lost, damaged and atrophied bone tissue in dental implant procedures, and to preserve alveolar bases after tooth extraction. In order to create and improve new therapies and to develop new biomaterials that restore, improve and prevent aggravation of compromised tissue function, poly (ϵ-caprolactone) (PCL) polymer membranes were obtained by the elect

Trans-sinus dental implants, for immediate placement when insufficient alveolar height is present: an alternative to zygomatic implants - surgical case series.

Low maxillary bone density associated with physiological bone remodeling and resorption accelerated by the presence or history of periodontal disease can prevent implant placement without either ridge and/or sinus augmentation in atrophic maxillary edentulous cases. As an alternative to avoid bone grafting and provide immediacy in restorative treatment care for the patient, remote anchorages to the basal bones of the maxilla of the patient are being used with zygomatic or pterygoid implants. The trans-sinus implant, when indicated can offer a reliable alternative to the zygomatic dental implan

Severe skin inflammation leads to salivary gland atrophy and dysfunction.

Psoriasis and atopic dermatitis are inflammatory skin diseases, and these patients have an increased risk of cardiovascular events and other medical complications. It has been clarified that skin inflammation affects internal organs. Additionally, dental caries tends to occur more frequently in patients with psoriasis and atopic dermatitis. In this study, we aim to investigate the effects of dermatitis on the salivary glands using an inflammation model mouse. Salivary secretion stimulated with pilocarpine was reduced in dermatitis mice. Histologically, dermatitis mice showed amyloid deposition

Implant site development: clinical realities of today and the prospects of tissue engineering.

The success of dental implants depends on their placement in bone of adequate density and volume in order to achieve primary stability. Optimal esthetics of implants requires their placement in a position approximating that of the natural teeth they replace. However, there is generally at least some degree of atrophy in the sites where implants are to be placed. This atrophy may occur either before or after tooth extraction. Following extraction of teeth, there is commonly alveolar ridge resorption in horizontal and vertical dimensions. Alternatively, some of the oral hard and soft tissues may

Multidisciplinary rehabilitation of Papillon-Lefèvre syndrome using zygomatic implants: A 3-year case report.

BACKGROUND: Papillon-Lefèvre syndrome (PLS) is a rare autosomal recessive disorder characterized by palmoplantar keratoderma and rapidly progressive periodontitis, resulting in early tooth loss and severe alveolar bone resorption. Prosthetic rehabilitation in such patients remains a significant clinical challenge due to compromised bone support and functional limitations. This report aims to evaluate the effectiveness of zygomatic implants as part of a multidisciplinary approach for oral rehabilitation in a patient with PLS. METHODS: A 17-year-old female with a confirmed diagnosis of PLS pres

Oral mucosal morphea: a new variant.

Morphea is a cutaneous disorder characterized by an excessive collagen deposition. While in almost all cases the sclerosing process exclusively affects the skin, there are anecdotal cases in which associated mucosal involvement has been described. We here report the case of a woman developing a whitish indurated plaque over the left upper vestibular mucosa and hard palate leading to dental mobility and exposure of the roots of several teeth. Cone beam computed tomography of the left maxilla showed bone resorption involving the upper cuspid to the second molar region with widened periodontal li

Histopathologic study of squamous cell carcinoma of the gingiva in edentulous and dentulous jaws of hamsters treated with N-methylnitrosourea.

Unilateral maxillary or mandibular molars were extracted from twenty-four, 25-day-old male syrian golden hamsters; 25 days after extraction, 20 received MNU intragastrically twice a week for 3 months. All animals were killed 1 month later. High degrees and incidence of invasion of gingival SCC were observed in dentulous jaws without functional occlusion, followed by dentulous jaws with functional occlusion and edentulous jaws. Invasion of carcinomas with extensive bone destruction was observed commonly in the gingiva of dentulous maxillary jaws without functional occlusion, but was scarcely ob

Oral health status and treatment needs in long-term medicine patients in a Copenhagen hospital department.

Oral health and dental treatment needs were investigated in 50 randomly selected long-term medicine patients admitted to The Glostrup Hospital, University of Copenhagen, Glostrup, Denmark. All the patients were clinically and radiologically examined. Oral health generally was poor. Two-thirds (66%) of the patients were totally edentulous, 24% partially edentulous. Only 10% were dentate with no dentures. The number of remaining teeth per patient averaged 4.7, that of caries destructed teeth 1.4. All 17 patients with remaining teeth had periodontal disease, and 13 of them suffered from caries. A

Relationship between cerebral atrophy and number of present teeth in elderly individuals with cognitive decline.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Recent shifts in the distribution of Japan's population towards older ages, have meant that the chance of encountering patients with dementia in dental clinics is increasing. Many studies have shown that the brain volume decreases along with the progression of dementia. Although previous studies have reported a relationship between tooth loss or periodontitis and the onset of dementia, the pathological mechanisms underlying this association have not been elucidated. In this study, we aimed to examine the relationship between the oral condition and brain atrophy and to discu

Menopause and Oral Health: Clinical Implications and Preventive Strategies.

Menopause, occurring typically between the ages of 45 and 55 years, marks the end of a woman's reproductive years and is characterized by the cessation of menstruation and a significant decline in estrogen and progesterone production. These hormonal changes impact various aspects of health, including oral health. This review explores the clinical implications of menopause on oral health and outlines preventive strategies. Hormonal changes during menopause can lead to xerostomia (dry mouth), periodontal disease, burning mouth syndrome (BMS), oral mucosal changes, altered taste sensation, and os

Age-related oral changes.

UNLABELLED: Age-related oral changes are seen in the oral hard and soft tissues as well as in bone, the temporomandibular joints and the oral mucosa. As older patients retain their natural teeth for longer, the clinical picture consists of normal physiological age changes in combination with pathological and iatrogenic effects. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: With an ageing population retaining more of its natural teeth for longer, dental professionals should expect to observe oral age changes more frequently.

Do submerged roots hinder orthodontic treatment or the use of implants?

INTRODUCTION: In clinical practice, submerged roots are found with high frequency, and their presence can change the planning of dental movements and implant placement. OBJECTIVES: To provide explanations of possible developments in the area involved, according to the evolutionary stage of the process, at the time of diagnosis. DISCUSSION: After atrophy of the periodontal ligament and epithelial remnants of Malassez, ankylosis of the bone with the submerged root occurs, and initiates a process of replacement resorption. Until this process reaches the most advanced stage, this area represents

Effect of a platform switch and a laser-microgrooved coronal design on short dental implants: A multicenter retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: The presence of severe atrophy in proximity to the maxillary sinus or the inferior alveolar nerve is a primary indication for the use of short dental implants. The placement of standard-length implants in such cases often requires complex regenerative procedures, leading to prolonged healing time and an increased invasiveness of the surgical procedure. OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study was to evaluate crestal bone remodeling, implant success, complications, and implantand patient-related risk factors associated with the use of short, platform-switched dental implants with a laser-m

Self-assembling peptide nanofibers and nanoceramics in a model of alveolar bone repair: Insights from in vivo experiments and clinical trial.

INTRODUCTION: Tooth extraction initiates a cascade of homeostatic and structural modifications within the periodontal tissues, culminating in alveolar ridge resorption. To prevent ridge resorption following extraction and facilitate successful placement of an implant-supported prosthesis, alveolar ridge preservation was performed. METHODS: In this study, the biocompatibility of a nanocomposite consisting of self-assembling peptide nanofibers (organic phase) and tri-calcium phosphate-nano hydroxyapatite (mineral phase), was evaluated in rabbits. Subsequently, the nanocomposite was grafted onto
