The periodontal ligament-periosteum sandwich hypothesis: A thought experiment on fenestrations and dehiscences.

This article describes a hypothesis for bone recovery after iatrogenic dehiscences or fenestrations. When roots are moved out of the alveolar bone, the periodontal ligament and periosteum form a bilayer membrane (sandwich) over the exposed root. If the root is allowed to relapse back toward its original position, bone recovery will occur between the periodontal ligament and periosteum.

The use of free-periosteum for secondary bone grafting to the maxillary alveolar clefts.

Some modification on the surgical technique for bone grafting to the alveolar clefts has been required. Secondary bone grafting was performed with and without free-periosteum on 34 (mean age, 9.8 +/- 1.1 years) and 44 (mean age, 10.7 +/- 1.2 years) alveolar clefts, respectively. Vertical bone formation which scored 3 or 4 was obtained in 97.1% of free-periosteum grafted clefts, while it was obtained in 79.5% of the control group. The rate of postoperative wound dehiscence in free-periosteum grafted clefts (20.6%) was not significantly different from the control group (11.4%). In the wound dehi

Autologous periosteum transplantation for the treatment of full thickness patellar cartilage defects.

Full-thickness patellar cartilage defects are often, but not always, associated with disabling anterior knee-pain and inability to take part in regular daily activities. There is no treatment of choice for this condition. It is well known that the cells in the cambium layer of the periosteum are pluripotent and can differentiate into hyaline (or hyaline-like) cartilage, especially if in a joint environment and under the influence of continous passive motion. In a few clinical studies autologous periosteum transplants alone have been used in the treatment of full thickness patellar cartilage de

Effect of freezing damage of the periosteum on the growth of the mandibular condylar process in the rat.

The regulatory effect of the periosteum on the growth of the mandibular condylar process has previously been investigated by relieving the periosteal tension, e.g. by dividing the periosteum, but no unanimous conclusion has been reached. In the present investigation, a different experimental design was applied in that the growth of the condylar process was observed following a provoked periosteal damage. Using 15-day-old rats, the mandibular ramus on the right side was exposed, and the periosteum subjacent to the condylar cartilage was frozen by a cryotechnique. Controls were treated similarly

A bioprinted periosteum organoid enables functional repair of critical-sized bone defects.

The periosteum is an essential yet often neglected regulator of bone regeneration, and its loss represents a major barrier to healing critical-sized bone defects. Existing periosteum-mimicking strategies rely primarily on static architectures or exogenous factor delivery and fail to reconstruct a living periosteal interface. Here, we introduce an organoid-based approach for engineering functional periosteum organoids capable of restoring periosteal identity and regulatory function. A bioprinted GelMA/SilMA interpenetrating composite hydrogel integrated with black phosphorus nanosheets is devel

Seamlessly Adhesive Bionic Periosteum Patches Via Filling Microcracks for Defective Bone Healing.

Current artificial designs of the periosteum focus on osteogenic or angiogenic properties, while ignoring the filling and integration with bone microcracks, which trigger a prolonged excessive inflammatory reaction and lead to failure of bone regeneration. In this study, seamless adhesive biomimetic periosteum patches (HABP/Sr-PLA) were prepared to fill microcracks in defective bone via interfacial self-assembly induced by Sr ions mediated metal-ligand interactions among pamidronate disodium-modified hyaluronic acid (HAPD), black phosphorus (BP), and hydrophilic polylactic acid (PLA). In vitro

Jaw Periosteum-Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells Regulate THP-1-Derived Macrophage Polarization.

Mesenchymal stem cells from bone marrow have powerful immunomodulatory capabilities. The interactions between jaw periosteal cells (JPCs) and macrophages are not only relevant for the application of JPCs in regenerative medicine, but this understanding could also help treating diseases like osteonecrosis of the jaw. In previous studies, we analyzed, for the first time, immunomodulatory features of 2D- and 3D-cultured JPCs. In the present work, the effects of JPCs on the polarization state of macrophages in contact coculture were analyzed. To improve the macrophage polarization study, different

Periosteum for Root Coverage in an Isolated Gingival Recession as an Autogenous Graft: A Case Report.

In periodontal care, where patient results are crucial in guiding the development of surgical techniques, gingival recession management is a critical issue. The periosteum eversion technique (PET) emerges as a modern strategy that leverages the intrinsic regenerative capabilities of the periosteum to attain root coverage. A detailed case study showcases the effectiveness of PET in managing a Miller Class I gingival recession alongside an adjunctive platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) procedure. This approach entailed the deliberate elevation and eversion of the periosteal flap to encompass the recessio

The mechanism of bone repair: Stem cells in the periosteum dedicated to bridging a large gap.

Bone repair requires the mobilization of stem cells from outer periosteum and inner bone marrow. A study by Jeffery et al.1 shows that periosteal stem cells are dedicated to repairing a large defect and regenerating both bone and marrow stroma.

Osteogenic Potential of Mouse Periosteum-Derived Cells Sorted for CD90 In Vitro and In Vivo.

The treatment of bone defects still presents complex problems, although various techniques have been developed. The periosteum is considered a good source of osteogenic precursor cells for new bone formation. It can be collected easily in the clinical setting and is less invasive to the donor site. However, the murine skull periosteum has a poor cellular component, and growth is very slow, making it important to identify a culture method for efficient growth. In the present study, we used three-dimensional cell migration with atelocollagen and gelatin media and found that both were effective f

Iatrogenic metastasis of a benign meningioma to the periosteum at the site of previous craniotomy: a case report.

Metastasis formation after resection of meningiomas is a rare event, predominantly occurring with malignant phenotypes. As far as we know, the presented case is the first report in the literature of iatrogenic seeding of a benign meningioma to the scalp following surgery. A 37-year-old woman was admitted because of a relapsing meningioma in the frontal lobe. In 1997, she had undergone complete excision of an atypical meningioma in same location. At follow-up, three new masses were found: a bifrontal meningioma on the edge of the falx, a smaller one in the falx just under the saggital sinus and

In vitro effects of elastase on periosteum of long bones: an histochemical, immunohistochemical and morphometric study.

The aim of the study was to determine the in vitro effects of porcine pancreatic elastase on the periosteum of long bones and to what extent the effects are selective for the elastic fibres of the tissue. Twenty-eight new-born chicks' tibiae were incubated for 1 or 3 hours in different experimental conditions (PBS, 30 or 60 units (U)/ml of porcine pancreatic elastase) or immediately formalin fixed. The tibiae were then processed for histo-chemical (Verhoeff and van Gieson stain), immunohistochemical (anti-elastin antibody) and histomorphometric analysis. A decrease of periosteal elastic fibres

Magnetic Hierarchical Micro/Nanofibrous Artificial Periosteum Promotes Bone Regeneration under a Static Magnetic Field.

The periosteum provides a highly organized osteogenic microenvironment that orchestrates cellular recruitment, vascularization, and bone regeneration. However, its clinical application is limited by donor scarcity and infection risks. Herein, a hierarchical micro/nanofibrous artificial periosteum was fabricated by integrating electrospun polycaprolactone (PCL) fibers with self-assembled nanofibers derived from alkali-dissolved chitosan (CS). Magnetic hydroxyapatite nanoparticles (MHNPs) and the osteoinductive agent icariin (ICA) were incorporated to enhance osteogenic activity. The biomimetic
