BACKGROUND AND AIM: Crohn's disease (CD) is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease characterized by excessive intestinal fibrosis. We previously demonstrated that periostin is highly expressed in various fibrosis-related diseases and is important in the development of fibrosis. In this study, we aimed to investigate the role of periostin in the pathogenesis of CD.
METHODS: We evaluated periostin expression in the terminal ileum of CD patients. We examined serum periostin levels in 75 CD patients and 150 healthy controls. We applied periostin-deficient (PNKO) and wild-type (WT) mice to a mouse m

Periostin is an extracellular matrix protein involved in processes ranging from early embryonic development to life-threatening cancer progression. Instead of acting as a single entity, it exists in numerous alternatively spliced isoforms, primarily differing in their C-terminal region, which drives diversification and context-dependence in its biological functions. Despite growing interest, inconsistencies in nomenclature and fragmented data still complicate the interpretation of isoform-specific roles. Therefore, the aim of this review is to provide a structured overview of periostin isoform

BACKGROUND: The role of periostin, a matricellular protein encoded by the POSTN gene, in chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyposis (CRSwNP) is reviewed. Periostin is considered a potential biomarker of endotype and may be useful for evaluating response to treatment.
METHODS: Search terms in PubMed and Web of Science (1990-March 2022) included: ((periostin) OR (POSTN)) AND ((sinusitis) OR (nasal polyp) OR (CRSwNP) OR (CRS). The primary outcomes were differences in tissue, serum, and nasal lavage between CRSwNP and CRS without NP (CRSsNP) or controls. Associated factors reported to affect per

Periostin is a matricellular protein that is ubiquitously expressed in normal human tissues and is involved in pathologic mechanism of chronic inflammatory and fibrotic disease. In this study we investigate periostin in the pathogenesis of Graves' orbitopathy (GO) using human orbital adipose tissue obtained from surgery and primary cultured orbital fibroblasts in vitro. POSTN (gene encoding periostin) expression in Graves' orbital tissues and healthy control tissues was studied, and the role of periostin in GO pathologic mechanism was examined through small-interfering RNA (siRNA)-mediated sil

The continuous accumulation of extracellular matrix will eventually lead to glomerular sclerosis, interstitial fibrosis, tubular atrophy and vascular sclerosis, which are involved in the progression of chronic kidney disease (CKD). If these processes can be discovered early and effective interventions given in time, the progression of kidney disease may be delayed. Therefore, exploring new biomarkers and therapeutic targets that can identify CKD at an early stage is urgently needed. In recent years, studies have shown that urine periostin may be used as a marker of early renal tubular injury.

Fibrous dysplasia of bone (FD) is a rare congenital bone disease, characterized by a fibrous component in the bone marrow. Periostin has been extensively researched because of its implication in various fibrotic or inflammatory diseases. Periostin may be associated with the burden or the severity of FD. The case control PERIOSDYS study aimed at assessing serum periostin levels in FD patients. Sixty four patients with monostotic or polyostotic disease were included, in order to evaluate whether the concentrations were greater in patients than in 128 healthy age, BMI and sex-matched controls and

Periostin is an extracellular matrix protein from fasciclin family, and it plays an important role in the cell adhesion, migration, and growth of the organism. Periostin prevents apoptosis while stimulating cardiomyocytes. The present study was designed to investigate cardioprotective effects of the recombinant murine periostin peptide administration in a rat model of isoproterenol (ISO)-induced myocardial injury. The experiment was performed on 84 adult male Sprague Dawley rats in 4 groups (n = 21): control group (1), periostin-treated group (2), ISO-treated group (3), and ISO + periostin-tre

AIM: The process of orthodontic tooth movement (OTM) involves multiple mechanisms of action including bone and extracellular matrix remodelling, although the role of periodontal ligament (PDL) in this process is largely unknown. Periostin, which is highly expressed in the PDL, is known to be responsible for mechanical stimulation in maintaining the integrity of periodontal tissues. We hypothesize that this protein plays an important role during OTM.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: By using spring in 4-week-old wild-type (WT) and periostin null mice, the rate of tooth movement and mineralization were ev

Neuregulin ligands and their ErbB receptors are important for the development of Schwann cells, the glial cells of the peripheral nervous system (PNS). ErbB3 deficiency is characterized by a complete loss of Schwann cells along axons of the peripheral nerves, impaired fasciculation and neuronal cell death. We performed comparative gene expression analysis of dorsal root ganglia (DRG) explant cultures from ErbB3-deficient and wild-type mice in order to identify genes that are involved in Schwann cell development and migration. The extracellular matrix (ECM) gene periostin was found to exhibit t

Delayed cerebral ischemia (DCI) is a serious complication of aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). Matricellular protein periostin (POSTN) has been found to be upregulated and linked with early brain injury after experimental SAH. The aim of the present study was to investigate the relationship between plasma POSTN levels and various clinical factors including serum levels of C-reactive protein (CRP), an inflammatory marker, in 109 consecutive SAH patients whose POSTN levels were measured at days 1-12 after aneurysmal obliteration. DCI developed in 16 patients associated with higher incide

The liver is importantly metabolic and detoxifying organ in the body. When various pathogenic factors affect the liver, the normal physiological and biochemical functions are weakened, resulting in liver diseases. Liver fibrosis is a common pathological process of chronic liver disease. During hepatic fibrosis the changes in the components of the extracellular matrix (ECM) provide an environment that facilitates tissue remodeling. Among these ECM components, periostin, a glycoprotein that is predominantly secreted by osteoblasts and their precursors, playing an important role in bone formation

BACKGROUND: Periostin is preferentially expressed by the periosteum, which mainly covers the long bones. Therefore, the role of periostin in osteoporotic fracture (OF) may differ depending on bone type. We performed a case-control study to investigate whether periostin can serve as a predictor of OF risk, particularly after dividing OFs into non-vertebral and vertebral fractures.
METHODS: Among 532 consecutive postmenopausal women not taking any drug or without any disease that could affect bone metabolism, 133 cases with OF (i.e., non-vertebral and/or vertebral fractures) and 133 age- and bo

PURPOSE: Periostin, an extracellular matrix protein closely related to mechanical stress, inflammation, and ageing, has been implicated in intervertebral disc degeneration (IVDD) in basic research. However, it has not been examined in clinical cases. This study aimed to evaluate the association between IVDD severity and serum periostin concentration as well as to analyse potential associations between IVDD and clinical and demographic factors.
METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included 198 patients who underwent lumbar disc herniation and lumbar canal stenosis between January 2020 and

INTRODUCTION: Periostin, an extracellular matrix protein, plays an important role in osteogenesis and is also known to activate several signals that contribute to chondrogenesis. The absence of periostin in periostin knockout mice leads to several disorders such as craniosynostosis and periostitis. There are several splice variants with different roles in heart disease and myocardial infarction. However, little is known about each variant's role in chondrogenesis, followed by bone formation. Therefore, the aim of this study is to investigate the role of several variants in chondrogenesis diffe

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Oral submucous fibrosis (OSF) a well-recognized oral premalignant disorder. Several studies have demonstrated that periostin, a matricellular protein, is involved in the development and pathogenesis of fibrosis diseases. Nevertheless, the contribution of periostin in OSF remains to be uncovered. The purpose of the study was to illustrate the functional role of periostin involved in OSF pathogenesis.
METHODS: RNA-sequencing was employed to screen for differentially expressed genes in normal and OSF tissues. Validation of the upregulation of periostin in OSF specimens and fi

BACKGROUND: Asthma is a chronic airway inflammatory disease characterized by airway remodeling, in which the bronchial smooth muscle (BSM) cells play an important role. Periostin, a biomarker that reflects Th2-driven inflammatory diseases such as asthma, may play an important role in the asthmatic airway. Although periostin is mainly produced in airway epithelial cells and fibroblasts after interleukin (IL)-13 stimulation, whether BSM cells produce periostin remains unclear. Therefore, we investigated periostin production in BSM cells and the mechanisms involved.
METHODS: Human BSM cells were
