[Demyelinating disease affecting both central and peripheral nervous system].

INTRODUCTION: Demyelinating disease affecting both the central and the peripheral nervous systems has rarely been reported. CASE REPORT: A 30-year-old man, presented with ataxia and diffuse areflexia due to polyneuropathy fullfilling demyelination criteria. His medical history was notable for central nervous system demyelination compatible with multiple sclerosis. He improved transiently with intravenous immunoglobulin and then stabilized with methotrexate. CONCLUSION: This case report distinguishes a new kind of inflammatory disease affecting both central and peripheral nervous system. It s

A distributed architecture for activating the peripheral nervous system.

We present a new system for functional electrical stimulation (FES) applications based on networked stimulation units. They embed an advanced analog circuit, which provides multipolar and multiphasic stimulation profiles, and digital circuits, which ensure safety, locally executed programmed profiles, and communication with the master controller. This architecture is thus based on distributed stimulation units (DSU) that need only a two-wire bus to communicate, regardless of the number of poles of each DSU-driven electrode. This structure minimizes the required bandwidth between master and dis

B-cell neurolymphomatosis confined to the peripheral nervous system.

Patients with neurolymphomatosis show lymphoma cells within the peripheral nerves, nerve root/plexus, or cranial nerves. However, most neurolymphomatosis patients show lymphomatous infiltration not only in the peripheral nervous system (PNS), but also in the meninges, Virchow-Robin space, and brain parenchyma. Here, we report a 74-year-old woman with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma presenting with motor-sensory-autonomic polyneuropathy and multiple cranial neuropathies. A diagnosis of neurolymphomatosis was made by sural nerve biopsy. Postmortem examination indicated that lymphoma cell infiltrat

Peripheral nervous system and spinal cord involvement in lymphoma.

Nine-hundred-eighty-nine patients with diagnosis of lymphoma were studied. Forty-six cases (4.6%) had compressions of the spinal cord or roots. Forty-two patients (4.2%) had Herpes zoster virus infections, which in 6 cases were of disseminated type. The major predisposing factors for infection were: advanced stage of lymphoma, previous systemic chemotherapy and splenectomy. Toxic polyneuropathy secondary to chemotherapy was found in 39 patients (3.9%). In 14 cases, the polyneuropathic symptoms were the main complaint (Group 1), while in the remaining 25 cases the diagnosis was made during neur

Serum antibodies against peripheral nervous system antigens in leprosy.

Since antibodies against peripheral nervous system (PNS) antigens may play a pathogenetic role in the mechanism of nerve damage in leprosy, sera from leprosy patients and contacts were investigated for anti-PNS antibodies by ELISA and immunoblot. In ELISA, elevated anti-PNS antibody levels were detected in 4 of 98 (4.1%) leprosy patients (4 of 52, 7.7%, lepromatous leprosy patients), in 1 of 28 (3.6%) contacts, and in 1 of 18 (5.6%) normal controls. There was no correlation between anti-PNS antibody levels and the bacterial index or neuropathy in leprosy. Immunoblot with a sample of six lepros

Peripheral nervous system damage in experimental chronic Chagas' disease.

Electromyographic and histopathologic studies were performed in Rockland mice chronically infected with CA-I Trypanosoma cruzi strain. At 4 months post-infection the emg failed to show spontaneous activity, but a diminished interference pattern was detected in half of the infected group, while mean motor unit potential amplitude and duration were increased, compared with controls. An active denervation was observed at 6 months which persisted up to 9 months, when motor unit potential showed a significantly lower mean activity and duration. At 12 months most of the infected mice developed a red

Peripheral nervous system involvement accompanies central nervous system involvement in anti-N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor encephalitis.

BACKGROUND: Anti-N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (NMDAR) encephalitis is the most common autoimmune encephalitis, primarily affecting the central nervous system (CNS) and typically presenting with neuropsychiatric symptoms. However, emerging evidence suggests that peripheral nervous system (PNS) involvement may also occur in some cases. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the clinical and neuro-electrophysiological characteristics of PNS involvement in patients with positive anti-NMDAR antibodies in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed all patients with CSF-confirmed anti-NMDA

Peripheral nervous system manifestations of MOG antibody associated disease.

Recent studies have reported the involvement of peripheral nervous system (PNS) in association with MOG-IgG, including isolated neuropathies. In this retrospective study we characterized the PNS involvement in MOG antibody associated disease (MOGAD). Six out of 215 MOGAD patients had PNS involvement (all polyradiculopathy) that occurred concurrently with a CNS demyelinating episode. We also demonstrated MOG expression in healthy human controls' proximal nerve root. Nine patients with true-positive MOG-IgG1 had PNS involvement temporally unrelated to a CNS demyelinating event. All these patient

[COVID-19 and the central and peripheral nervous system].

The health effects of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by the infection of SARS-CoV‑2 (severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2) are becoming increasingly clear as the pandemic spreads. In addition to the lungs, other organs are also affected, which can significantly influence morbidity and mortality. In particular, neurological symptoms involving the central nervous system can lead to acute or long-term consequences. The mechanisms of this neuropathogenesis of SARS-CoV‑2 infection and its relation to acute and chronic neurological symptoms are the subject of current studies i

When botany inspired pathology of the peripheral nervous system.

Medicine and botany are 2 distinct disciplines of "natural science," one focusing on humans, the other on plants. However, among the life sciences, both were quite close in earlier times. Moreover, the history of neuropathology, especially in the field of the peripheral nervous system, has been marked by many examples of "botanical images" used to describe certain histopathologic structures. We propose to better understand the reasons why neuropathologists used these botanical terms from a number of interesting anecdotes.

Primary Sjögren's syndrome: central and peripheral nervous system involvements.

Primary Sjögren's syndrome (pSS) is a common systemic autoimmune disease characterised by exocrinopathy resulting in dryness of the mouth and eyes, unexplained fatigue and diffuse pain. Neurological involvement is uncommon in pSS, involving the central nervous system in 2-5% of cases and more frequently the peripheral nervous system in 5-15% of cases. The diagnosis of pSS is to be considered when confronted with symptoms such as mouth and eye dryness, fatigue and pain, the most frequent of pSS symptoms. Objective measures of oral and eye dryness may help assert the diagnosis of pSS, as well as

Involvement of the Peripheral Nervous System in Episodic Ataxias.

Episodic ataxias comprise a group of inherited disorders, which have a common hallmark-transient attacks of ataxia. The genetic background is heterogeneous and the causative genes are not always identified. Furthermore, the clinical presentation, including intraictal and interictal symptoms, as well as the retention and progression of neurological deficits, is heterogeneous. Spells of ataxia can be accompanied by other symptoms-mostly from the central nervous system. However, in some of episodic ataxias involvement of peripheral nervous system is a part of typical clinical picture. This review

Telocytes in the Normal and Pathological Peripheral Nervous System.

We studied telocytes/CD34+ stromal cells in the normal and pathological peripheral nervous system (PNS), for which we reviewed the literature and contributed our observations under light and electron microscopy in this field. We consider the following aspects: (A) general characteristics of telocytes and the terminology used for these cells (e.g., endoneurial stromal cells) in PNS; (B) the presence, characteristics and arrangement of telocytes in the normal PNS, including (i) nerve epi-perineurium and endoneurium (e.g., telopodes extending into the endoneurial space); (ii) sensory nerve ending

Central Nervous System Involvement in Peripheral T Cell Lymphoma.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Central nervous system (CNS) involvement in peripheral T cell lymphoma (PTCL) is a difficult condition to treat, both as a primary and a secondary disease. RECENT FINDINGS: Primary CNS lymphoma (PCNSL) in PTCL is very rare, making up only 2% of all PCNSLs. The incidence of CNS relapse is generally 2-6% in all cases of PTCL, but the risk may vary by histologic subtype, and extranodal involvement > 1 has been consistently found to be a risk factor for CNS relapse. Currently, there is no consensus about indications for CNS prophylactic treatment. A high-dose systemic methotrex

Macrophage biology in the peripheral nervous system after injury.

Neuroinflammation has positive and negative effects. This review focuses on the roles of macrophage in the PNS. Transection of PNS axons leads to degeneration and clearance of the distal nerve and to changes in the region of the axotomized cell bodies. In both locations, resident and infiltrating macrophages are found. Macrophages enter these areas in response to expression of the chemokine CCL2 acting on the macrophage receptor CCR2. In the distal nerve, macrophages and other phagocytes are involved in clearance of axonal debris, which removes molecules that inhibit nerve regeneration. In the
