Effects of blood, bile and starch in the peritoneal cavity of the rat.

The reaction of rat peritoneum to the intraperitoneal injection of rat blood, human bile, starch glove powder, and a suspension of starch in blood or bile was examined by histological section and en face microscopy of the peritoneal surface (Häutchen technique). Haemoperitoneum causes little destruction of the peritoneum, but bile produces some peritonitis with a purulent exudate and destruction of subperitoneal muscle. Starch granulomas form following intraperitoneal injection of glove powder, though 0.1 g is insufficient to produce adhesions. The addition of starch to blood or bile enhances

Hydatid peritonitis caused by liver hydatid cyst rupture into the peritoneal cavity: A case report.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Hydatid disease predominantly affects the liver and poses a global health concern in regions with significant livestock presence. Hydatid peritonitis, a rare complication, arises when a liver hydatid cyst ruptures into the peritoneal cavity, posing a potential threat to the patient's life. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case of a 45-year-old female with abdominal distension, tenderness, and altered general status following an abdominal contusion. Imaging revealed ruptured hydatid cysts in the liver, causing complicated hydatid peritonitis. Emergency laparotomy an

E. coli induced larger neutrophils in the peritoneal cavity of mice with severe septic peritonitis.

Neutrophils, classified as professional phagocytes, are crucial in killing bacteria and preventing inflammation. When studying the roles of neutrophils in the development of the septic peritonitis induced by E. coli, we noticed some of the larger cells existed among peritoneal lavage fluid cells (PLCs). Besides the large size, their nuclei are segmented and flat, and squeezed to the marginal zone of the inner membrane. The cells, therefore, were designated as E. coli induced larger neutrophils (e-Neus). Further studies showed that, the e-Neus were ly6G positive, indicating the e-Neus were a ty

Experimental adhesion model: effect of viscosities of fluids put in the peritoneal cavity on preventing peritoneal adhesions.

In this study we assessed the effectiveness of fluid viscosities placed in the peritoneal cavity to prevent postoperative peritoneal adhesions. Thirty-six Wistar albino female rats (average weight: 160 +/- 30 g, average age: 6.5 months) were divided into three groups of equal number. A standard adhesion pattern was formed in each group. Then, 3 ml isotonic sodium chloride solution (relative viscosity value: 1) was added into the peritoneal cavity of group 1; 3 ml standard 6% hydroxy ethyl starch solution (HES) (relative viscosity value: 2.9) was added into the peritoneal cavity of group 2; and

Magnetic resonance imaging of the peritoneal cavity among peritoneal dialysis patients, using the dialysate as "contrast medium".

The objectives of this study were to evaluate whether adequate observation of abdominal pathologic features related to peritoneal dialysis (PD) was possible with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) under routine conditions, i.e., against the background of the dialysate and without contrast medium. For 16 male and seven female patients (mean age, 51.8 +/- 15.0 yr; mean duration of PD, 324 +/- 542 d), 25 peritoneal MRI studies were performed with the intraperitoneal dialysate as usual. Indications were symptoms or combinations of symptoms, such as leakage or abdominal wall edema (n = 3), bloody dia

[Extraneural metastasis of malignant glioma through a ventriculo-peritoneal shunt: growth in peritoneal cavity as ascitic form].

This is the first report of extraneural metastasis of malignant glioma through V-P shunt tube and growth in peritoneal cavity as ascitic form. The patient was a 43-year-old man who was admitted to our hospital with occipital headache. CT scan showed enhanced cystic tumor mass at left temporal lobe. Craniotomy and partial excision of the tumor was done and the histology of tumor tissue showed a malignant astrocytoma. Following this treatment, the patient received the adjuvant therapies of radiation, chemotherapy and immunotherapy with interferon, and also recraniotomy three times. In the mean t

Mucosal-Associated Invariant T Cells Redistribute to the Peritoneal Cavity During Spontaneous Bacterial Peritonitis and Contribute to Peritoneal Inflammation.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Mucosal-associated invariant T (MAIT) cells are depleted from blood in patients with advanced liver disease and show features of immune dysfunction. Because circulating MAIT cells differ from organ-resident MAIT cells, we aimed to investigate the frequency, phenotype, and function of peritoneal MAIT cells from patients with cirrhosis and spontaneous bacterial peritonitis (SBP). METHODS: MAIT cells in blood and ascitic fluid from patients with cirrhosis were characterized using flow cytometry. Healthy individuals and noncirrhotic patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis serve

Peritoneal cavity-derived GATA6+ macrophages inhibit fibrosis through IL33 in endometrium.

Macrophages exhibit a high degree of plasticity and play pivotal roles both in the normal physiological cycle of the endometrium and in its regeneration following injury. Although some new subsets of endometrial macrophages have been identified, their origins and functions remain to be further explored. In this study, we employed single-cell sequencing to analyze the endometrium of patients with normal endometrium and intrauterine adhesion (IUA) caused by injury. We identified a unique subset of macrophages distinguished by the expression of GATA6, a marker indicative of cavity macrophages. We

Repeat Cytoreductive Surgery for Colorectal Cancer Metastatic to the Peritoneal Cavity.

INTRODUCTION: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a leading cause of cancer-related death worldwide. 5-15% of CRC patients develop peritoneal metastases (PM), and those with PM have poor prognosis. For patients with new CRC-related PM, surgical treatment, including cytoreductive surgery (CRS) with/without hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) has been shown to improve survival compared with systemic therapy alone; however, little is known about the benefits of re-do CRS for recurrent PM. METHODS: All CRC patients who underwent CRS with/without HIPEC (2008-2023) were retrospectively identif

Spontaneous rupture into the peritoneal cavity: Unusual presentation of prostatic abscess.

INTRODUCTION: Prostatic abscess is a rare but relatively serious infectious disease; its association with spontaneous rupture is extremely unusual. PRESENTATION OF CASE: We present a case of peritonitis secondary to a rupture of prostatic abscess in a 87-year-old man. The diagnosis was made on computed tomography. Emergency laparotomy, transrectal ultrasonography guided aspiration of the residual abscess and antibiotics permitted a full recovery. DISCUSSION: Delay in diagnosis of prostatic abscess can have grave sequelae, including spontaneous rupture into the urethra, perineum, bladder or r

Activated peritoneal cavity B-1a cells possess regulatory B cell properties.

Previous studies have suggested that murine peritoneal cavity-derived B-1a cells possess similarities with described regulatory B cell subsets. The aim of the current study was to examine the potential immunoregulatory function of peritoneal cavity-derived B(-1a) cells. In vitro activation of peritoneal cavity-derived B- and B-1a cells shows that activation of these B cells with anti-CD40 and LPS induces these cells to secrete more IL-10, IL-6 and IgM as compared to splenic B cells. In a suppression assay, CD40/TLR4-activated peritoneal cavity B cells possess regulatory B cell functions as the

Peritoneal cavity B-1a cells promote peripheral CD4+ T-cell activation.

Innate-like murine B-1a cells are well known for their ability to secrete natural IgM. Their non-Ab mediated functions, including Ag presentation to CD4(+) T cells, are less well explored. Using combined adoptive transfer experiments with peptide-pulsed peritoneal cavity (PerC)-derived B-1a cells and CFSE-labeled T cells, we show that B-1a cells present Ag to CD4(+) T cells from the periphery in vivo. In vitro characterization, using co-cultures in which B-1a or splenic B cells presented whole OVA protein to OVA-specific Tg T cells, shows that B-1a cells differentially promote intracellular cy

Phenotype and function of murine peritoneal cavity macrophage derived-dendritic cells.

The accessory activity was reported in murine peritoneal cavity macrophage derived dendritic cells (PEC-DC) in a mixed lymphocyte reaction (MLR). Here we continue the characterization of the generated PEC-DC using the criteria of morphology, phenotype and other accessory function. We have demonstrated that murine peritoneal cavity macrophages can be induced to differentiate in vitro into cells exhibiting typical dendritic cell (DC) morphology, phenotype and function. The proliferative capacity of the progenitors was amplified in the first step of the culture (day 0-7) using a combination of ea

SILS (single incision laparoscopic surgery) - new surgical approach to peritoneal cavity.

PURPOSE: The objective of the modern surgery is not only to perform surgical procedures aiming to improve the health condition of the patient, but whenever possible to use minimally invasive approach and to ensure the satisfying cosmetic result. During the last years we can observe an intense development of surgical technique minimizing the access to peritoneal cavity to just one small incision, most frequently localized in the umbilicus. MATERIAL/METHODS: Between October 2009 and May 2010 an overall number of 34 laparoscopic procedures through a single abdominal wall incision were performed

Splenosis of the peritoneal cavity resembling an adnexal tumor: case report.

INTRODUCTION: Splenosis is the autoimplantation of ectopic spleen tissue in various anatomic cavities of the body resulting after trauma or rupture of the splenic parenchyma. The major localization sites of this phenomenon are mainly intraperitoneal, the gastrenteric tract, genitalia, intrahepatically and the kidneys. Extraperitoneal locations occur less frequently and include the thorax and brain. Also locallization in the subcutaneous fat has been described. CASE REPORT: We present the case of a 32-year-old woman with symptomatic peritoneal cavity splenosis occurring ten years after traumat

Hysteroscopy may transport malignant cells into the peritoneal cavity. Case report.

The purpose of this report is to caution against the use of hysteroscopy at the time of uterine curettage performed in women with postmenopausal bleeding suspected of having endometrial carcinoma. A 63 year old postmenopausal woman had endometrial carcinoma diagnosed by hysteroscopically guided curettage. At the time of hysterectomy three weeks later, malignant cells were found in pelvic washings. Although a causal relationship between hysteroscopy and malignant peritoneal cytology cannot be postulated, we believe that hysterescopy should be used with caution in the work up of postmenopausal b

[Own modification of the visualization of adhesions in the peritoneal cavity in patients treated with continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis].

The intraperitoneal adhesions were imagined with 3 non-invasive methods such as scintigraphy, ultrasonography, computerised tomography in 25 patients (pts) on CAPD (13 females and 12 males, aged 8-72 years). Initial imaging of peritoneal cavity was performed up to 4 months after the start of CAPD and repeated every 6-12 months of further therapy. In 9 patients the adhesions where detected at the start of CAPD. Only in 4 the progression of adhesions was diagnosed as a change of the structure from single to multiple or multilocular. In all these pts, peritonitis occurred at least once in the cou

Interleukin 10 level in the peritoneal cavity is a prognostic marker for peritoneal recurrence of T4 colorectal cancer.

Peritoneal recurrence (PR) is a major relapse pattern of colorectal cancer (CRC). We investigated whether peritoneal immune cytokines can predict PR. Cytokine concentrations of peritoneal fluid from CRC patients were measured. Patients were grouped according to peritoneal cancer burden (PCB): no tumor cells (≤ pT3), microscopic tumor cells (pT4), or gross tumors (M1c). Cytokine concentrations were compared among the three groups and the associations of those in pT4 patients with and without postoperative PR were assessed. Of the ten cytokines assayed, IL6, IL10, and TGFB1 increased with progre
