Targeting of HER2 antigen for the treatment of disseminated peritoneal disease.

The studies reported herein demonstrate the efficacy of alpha-particle-targeted radiation therapy of peritoneal disease with Herceptin as the targeting vehicle. Using the CHX-A-DTPA linker, Herceptin was radiolabeled with indium-111 and bismuth-213 with high efficiency without compromising immunoreactivity. A pilot radioimmunotherapy study treating mice bearing 5-day LS-174T (i.p.) xenografts, a low but uniform HER2 expressing, human colon carcinoma, with a single dose of (213)Bi-CHX-A"-Herceptin, proved disappointing. This defined the effect of tumor burden/size on tumor response to radioimmu

Reprogramming of Mesothelial-Mesenchymal Transition in Chronic Peritoneal Diseases by Estrogen Receptor Modulation and TGF-β1 Inhibition.

In chronic peritoneal diseases, mesothelial-mesenchymal transition is determined by cues from the extracellular environment rather than just the cellular genome. The transformation of peritoneal mesothelial cells and other host cells into myofibroblasts is mediated by cell membrane receptors, Transforming Growth Factor β1 (TGF-β1), Src and Hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF). This article provides a narrative review of the reprogramming of mesothelial mesenchymal transition in chronic peritoneal diseases, drawing on the similarities in pathophysiology between encapsulating peritoneal sclerosis and

Current practice of Latin American centers in the treatment of peritoneal diseases with cytoreductive surgery with HIPEC.

INTRODUCTION: A combination therapy of cytoreductive surgery (CRS) and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) has been proposed as a treatment option in patients with peritoneal metastasis of colorectal, ovarian, gastric cancers and sarcomas and as a current standard treatment for pseudomyxoma peritonei and peritoneal mesothelioma. There is a need to standardize its indication, drugs selection along with their concentrations and ways to deliver peritoneal chemotherapy solutions for best outcomes. AIM OF THE STUDY: To investigate the current practice of Latin American (LA) Centers i

Artificial Intelligence in Dialysis Therapies: Applications in Hemodialysis and Peritoneal Dialysis for Managing Infectious Diseases and Complications.

This narrative review synthesizes evidence from a systematic literature search (2019-2025) on artificial intelligence (AI) applications in hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis for managing infections and complications. Dialysis patients face infection rates 100-fold higher than the general population and sepsis mortality exceeding 35%. The AI, utilizing machine learning algorithms such as XGBoost, deep neural networks, and explainable AI tools, revolutionizes care through precise diagnostics, prognostics, and therapeutics. Key models demonstrate high accuracy in predicting bloodstream infectio

Desmoid-type fibromatosis in the setting of malignant peritoneal mesothelioma: a case report of two rare diseases.

BACKGROUND: Desmoid-type fibromatosis (DTF) is a rare benign lesion that usually arises from the abdominal wall or extremities and rarely from the mesentery or intrabdominal organs. Malignant peritoneal mesothelioma is also a rare, yet aggressive disease. To our knowledge, this is the first case report of desmoid-type fibromatosis in the setting of malignant peritoneal mesothelioma. CASE PRESENTATION: An early 30-year-old female was referred to our center for large intra-abdominal mass concerning for recurrent malignant peritoneal mesothelioma after previous cytoreductive surgery with hyperth

Peritoneal dialysis-associated peritonitis in two patients with Bartter syndrome and end-stage kidney disease: a case report.

Bartter syndrome is a rare inherited salt-wasting disorder affecting the thick ascending limb of the loop of Henle. It is characterized by hypokalemic metabolic alkalosis, polyuria, and secondary normotensive hyperaldosteronism. A minority of patients may progress to end-stage kidney disease while maintaining polyuria and normokalemia. Peritoneal dialysis may represent a suitable option for these patients when kidney transplantation is not available. However, due to its rarity, there are no data on PD-related outcomes. Here we report two cases of PD treatment with BS from two Italian referral

A Case Report of Pasteurella multocida Peritoneal Dialysis-Related Peritonitis: Your Pet Cat May Be a Source of Disease!

BACKGROUND: Pasteurella multocida is a gram-negative coccobacillus commonly found in the oropharyngeal flora of various animals, including domestic pets such as cats and dogs. Transmission of Pasteurella to humans usually occurs through close contact and can cause soft tissue infections, pneumonia, peritonitis, and meningitis. CASE REPORT: We present a case of peritonitis in a 52-year-old male patient who had been undergoing home peritoneal dialysis for four years due to chronic renal failure. Peritoneal fluid culture identified the causative agent as P. multocida using matrix-assisted laser

Association Between Peritoneal Glucose Absorption, Lipid Metabolism, and Cardiovascular Disease Risk in Nondiabetic Patients on Peritoneal Dialysis.

BACKGROUND: Excessive sugar intake increases the energy metabolic burden and the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Patients on peritoneal dialysis absorb much more glucose than the World Health Organization recommends, but the link to CVD is unclear. OBJECTIVE: To identify the association between peritoneal glucose absorption, lipid metabolism, and CVD. METHODS: We applied generalized additive mixed effects and mixed effects Cox proportional hazard models to evaluate the impact of peritoneal glucose absorption on lipid profiles and CVD risk. We performed subgroup analyses by using protei

Diverticular disease and treatment with gastric acid inhibitors do not predispose to peritonitis of enteric origin in peritoneal dialysis patients.

OBJECTIVE: Enteric peritonitis (EP) is an infrequent complication of peritoneal dialysis (PD), with severe consequences for peritoneal membrane viability and patient outcome. Factors such as diverticular disease and gastric acid inhibitors have been implicated in its appearance. We investigated several risk factors, including those mentioned below, that can influence the development of EP. DESIGN: Retrospective cross-sectional study. SETTING: Tertiary-care public university hospital. PATIENTS: Fifty-seven PD patients treated in our PD unit during August 1998. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: A bariu

Malignant peritoneal mesothelioma in a woman with bilateral ovarian serous borderline tumour: Potential interactions between the two diseases.

We report a case of a 59-year-old woman with peritoneal malignant mesothelioma and no previous exposure to asbestos with a diagnosis of bilateral ovarian serous borderline tumour with peritoneal implants one year before. We discuss the histopathological and immunohistochemical findings to explain possible and potential interactions between the two diseases. To our knowledge, the association of both serous borderline ovarian tumour and malignant peritoneal mesothelioma has never been described before in the same woman and in such a tight temporal connection. This finding raises numerous issues

Peritoneal Lavage Cytology and Radiologically Evident Peritoneal Carcinomatosis Within 12 Months in Advanced Digestive Cancer Without Macroscopic Peritoneal Disease: A Single-Centre Prognostic Study.

Background/Objectives: Peritoneal dissemination is a major pattern of failure in advanced digestive cancer and is poorly detected by cross-sectional imaging. Outside gastric cancer, peritoneal lavage cytology is rarely performed and carries no staging weight. We examined the association between cytological status and subsequent peritoneal carcinomatosis in patients without peritoneal disease on imaging or at operation. Methods: Retrospective prognostic study of consecutive patients with clinically staged T3-T4 digestive malignancy operated on by one surgical team (January 2019-December 2022).
