Efficacy of naringenin against permethrin-induced testicular toxicity in rats.

Permethrin (PM), a synthetic pyrethroid insecticide, has broad toxicity spectra. We aimed to investigate the effects of PM on the testes of adult albino rats, examine the recovery response and evaluate the efficacy of naringenin (NG) supplementation. Adult male albino rats were randomly assigned to five groups of six each: control, NG (50 mg/kg), PM (70 mg/kg), recovery (after subsequent withdrawal of PM) and NG-PM group. All treatments were given by oral gavage for 6 weeks and another 3 weeks for the recovery group. At the time of sacrifice, each testis was weighed. Biochemical analysis of ep

Treatment of Scabies: Comparison of Lindane 1% vs Permethrin 5.

Scabies, whose etiologic agent is Sarcoptes scabiei, is a neglected parasitic disease that is a major public health problem in many resourcepoor regions. Its current therapies include benzyl benzoate, lindane, permethrin, sulfur, crotamiton, monosulfiram, and oral ivermectin. The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy and safety of lindane 1% lotion vs permethrin 5% in the treatment of scabies. A total of 120 patients with scabies attending a dermatology outpatient department were included. Patients were randomly divided into two groups. Sixty patients and their family contacts received

Treatment of scabies, permethrin 5% cream vs. crotamiton 10% cream.

Scabies is one of the three most common skin disorders in children, along with tinea and pyoderma. The treatment of choice is still controversial. The aim of this study is to compare the efficacy of permethrin 5% cream vs. crotamiton 10% cream in the treatment of scabies. In total, 350 patients with scabies were enrolled, and randomized into two groups. The first group received permethrin 5% cream on two occasions with a one-week interval, while the second group received topical crotamiton 10% cream and were told to apply this twice daily for five consecutive days. The treatment was evaluated

Albendazole: single or combination therapy with permethrin against pediculosis capitis.

Pediculosis capitis is a worldwide problem and a growing concern because of resistance to pediculicides. In the present study, we investigated whether albendazole could be used in the treatment of pediculosis capitis in combination with 1% permethrin or alone. A total of 150 children were randomly divided to five groups of 30 each. Group 1 got albendazole in a single dose (400 mg), group 2 got albendazole at 400 mg for 3 days, group 3 was given 1% permethrin, group 4 took 1% permethrin and albendazole in a single dose (400 mg), and group 5 got 1% permethrin and albendazole in a dose of 400 mg

Efficacy of combination therapy with oral Ivermectin and topical permethrin versus permethrin monotherapy in pediatric patients with persistent scabies: a propensity score-adjusted observational study.

BACKGROUND: Scabies is a highly contagious parasitic infestation that disproportionately affects children in resource-limited settings. Topical 5% permethrin is first-line therapy, but effectiveness is limited by suboptimal application, rapid reinfestation, and emerging resistance. Adding oral ivermectin to permethrin has shown promise in small series, yet its cost-28-37% of the 2022 minimum wage in Türkiye before generics and still 5-7% after-puts it beyond reach for many families, with similar gaps in other low-income countries. We conducted a propensity-score-adjusted study comparing iverme

Combined Oral Ivermectin and 5% Permethrin Cream to Treat Severe Scabies.

BACKGROUND: Severe scabies, a rare parasitic skin disease characterized by abundant skin mites, may be life-threatening and poses public health concerns worldwide. A combination of standard-dose oral ivermectin and topical scabicides is recommended for treatment. However, data from randomized clinical trials are lacking, and the probability of cure is uncertain. Ivermectin at higher doses has been effective in the treatment of some parasitic diseases. METHODS: We conducted a blinded randomized trial involving adults with severe scabies (i.e., profuse or crusted), as confirmed by parasitologic

Western Kenyan Anopheles gambiae showing intense permethrin resistance harbour distinct microbiota.

BACKGROUND: Insecticide resistance poses a growing challenge to malaria vector control in Kenya and around the world. Following evidence of associations between the mosquito microbiota and insecticide resistance, the microbiota of Anopheles gambiae sensu stricto (s.s.) from Tulukuyi village, Bungoma, Kenya, with differing permethrin resistance profiles were comparatively characterized. METHODS: Using the CDC bottle bioassay, 133 2-3 day-old, virgin, non-blood fed female F1 progeny of field-caught An. gambiae s.s. were exposed to five times (107.5 µg/ml) the discriminating dose of permethrin.

[High performance liquid chromatography-validated analytical method for 1% permethrin quantification].

INTRODUCTION: In Cuba, as well as in other countries, Pediculus capitis infestation has increased since the 70's; this is the reason why a program aimed at controlling and preventing this infestation was designed. This program includes quality control studies of the active synthetic pyrethroid Permethrin and its activity at 1% on lice and 5% on scabies. Due to its low toxicity and positive risk/benefit ratio, Permethrin is a pediculicide of choice to decrease Pediculus capitis infestation. OBJECTIVE: To validate an analytical method using high performance liquid chromatography and its applica

Molecular and cellular influences of permethrin on mammalian nociceptors at physiological temperatures.

The influence of pyrethroid insecticides is thought to be abrogated at mammalian physiological temperatures. Yet there are many reports of transient pain and paresthesia following accidental exposures. Using whole cell patch clamp techniques, we examined the interaction of the pyrethroid insecticide permethrin on skin, muscle and putative vascular nociceptors of the rat DRG (dorsal root ganglion). Following permethrin (10 μM) application, action potential (AP) duration was increased in all nociceptor populations, but only muscle nociceptors developed spontaneous activity or increased excitabil

A resistance of head lice (Pediculus capitis) to permethrin in Czech Republic.

An outbreak of pediculosis at primary schools was recorded in the Czech Republic in 1992. Almost 20% of children in some schools were infested. This outbreak can be attributed to the resistance of head lice to permethrin, which has not been mentioned in literature yet. The resistance factors established in three towns range between 2 and 385 and between 5 and 557 for LC50 and LC90 values, respectively. This resistance has developed after exclusive use of pyrethroids lotion and shampoo in the Czech Republic since 1978, and it was accompanied by a cross-resistance to d-phenothrin and bioalethrin

[Treatment of pediculosis capitis in children with permethrin 1% shampoo or lotion].

A clinical and entomological trial was carried out in 88 head louse (Pediculus humanus capitis) infested children treated with a single dose of 1% permethrin shampoo or lotion. The sex distribution was 47 males an 41 females with ages ranging between 5 and 14 year olds. In order to assess the efficiency of treatments, search for adult forms, nymphs and eggs (nits) of the parasite was performed in each of the children, before and after treatment (30 minutes, 7 days and 21 days). The entomological evaluations consisted in stereoscopic and microscopic examinations of a mean of 12 hair samples tak

Scabies in nursing homes: an eradication program with permethrin 5% cream.

Permethrin 5% cream was used to treat scabies in three large nursing homes under a compassionate-plea protocol for chronic, therapy-resistant infestations. All residents, staff, and frequent visitors were treated whether or not symptomatic. Family members of these groups were treated either when symptomatic or directly exposed to scabies. Nine hundred ninety-five persons were treated, 202 of whom were diagnosed with scabies. Approximately 35% (111 of 313) of nursing home residents were diagnosed with scabies. These were patients in whom multiple treatments with other scabicides were unsuccessf

Effectiveness of permethrin-treated military uniform fabric against human body lice.

Military uniform fabric patches treated with permethrin were evaluated against natural and laboratory strains of human body lice, Pediculus humanus, L. Permethrin-treated fabric was toxic to body lice on contact and quickly affected feeding behavior and the likelihood of disease transmission, even when washed up to 20 times. The use of permethrin-treated clothing offers a new passive approach in human louse control not previously feasible. Military personnel wearing permethrin-treated uniforms, therefore, can expect significant and long-term protection from lice and louse-borne diseases in end

Permethrin Steal Effect by Unmasked Corneocytic Keratin in Topical Therapy of Scabies.

INTRODUCTION: The use of epicutaneously applied permethrin in the treatment of common scabies is considered to be the first-line therapy. Due to increasing clinical treatment failure, the development of genetic resistance to permethrin in Sarcoptes scabiei var. hominis has been postulated. In addition, metabolic resistance and pharmacokinetic limitations by parasitic digestion and reactive thickening of stratum corneum are suspected to cause a reduction in cutaneous bioavailability. METHODS: Since lipophilic permethrin is known to form hydrophobic interactions with proteins via van der Waals
