Trichinella nativa and Trichinella pseudospiralis infections in a wild rodent host, the deer mouse (Peromyscus maniculatus), were characterized. Forty-six percent of 400 inoculated T. nativa were recovered on day 4 postinoculation (PI); 77% and 23% were found in the small and large intestines, respectively. Thirty-one percent of the worms recovered on day 4 remained in the large intestine beyond day 20 PI. Worms were embedded in the mucosa of the small intestine, cecum, and colon. Females recovered from the small and large intestines had statistically indistinguishable in vitro larval releases

Effects of short-day photoperiod, pinealectomy, and melatonin on sexual maturation were tested in Peromyscus leucopus from either Connecticut (CT) or Georgia (GA). Laboratory reared-stocks from CT and GA were exposed to short daylength (photoperiod) from birth or 25 days of age. At 12 wk of age, delay in sexual maturation was indicated in most CT mice by decreased testis length, combined testes weight, and seminal vesicle weight. Conversely, GA animals did not delay sexual maturation when exposed to short-day photoperiod from either birth or 25 days of age. These results indicate that response

Following previous reports that male deer mice, Peromyscus maniculatus, produce chemical signals that attract conspecific females, we analysed and field-tested sex-attractant semiochemicals (message-bearing chemicals) of male deer mice. Field traps baited with urine- and faeces-soiled bedding of male mice captured adult female, but not male, mice, indicating dissemination of sex-attractant semiochemicals from the males' excreta. Analysing excreta headspace volatiles of both males and females by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry revealed that 5-methyl-2-hexanone was male-specific, and that e

Anaplasma phagocytophilum was used to infect Peromyscus leucopus mice by three routes of inoculation: infected tick infestation and intraperitoneal (IP) and subcutaneous (SQ) injection of infected tissue culture cells. A set of 12 mice were infected (four tick, four IP, and four SQ), and blood was drawn at 1, 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 21, 28, 35, and 60 days post-infection and analyzed by use of a quantitative PCR assay to assess the level of infection. An additional set of 108 mice were infected (36 tick, 36 IP, 36 SQ) and euthanized at 1, 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 21, 28, and 35 days post-infection (four mice

To determine whether the relative abundance of immature Ixodes dammini (the vector of Lyme disease and human babesiosis) is related to habitat structure, we examined tick burdens on their main host, the white-footed mouse (Peromyscus leucopus), in 4 structurally diverse sites on Great Island, Massachusetts, USA. Vegetation structure at each site was quantified with respect to 25 habitat variables. Principal components analysis was used to reduce this set of habitat variables to seven new and orthogonal variables. Immature tick abundance varied widely among grids. Regression analysis of tick bu

We compared opioid and nonopioid involvement in the mediation of scent-induced analgesia in two populations of deer mice, Peromyscus maniculatus; P. m. artemisiae from a mainland region and P. m. angustus from a small marine island. Exposure to bedding taken from the soiled home cage of an isolated (dominant aggressive) male resident elicited a significant increase in the nociceptive responses of male deer mice from mixed sex pairs, with the island population of mice displaying significantly greater analgesic responses than the mainland animals. In the mainland population of mice, the large am

Macrophage numbers increased in the spleen, liver, testes, heart, and kidney of deer mice infected for seven to ten weeks with Trypanosoma brucei EATRO 110. The macrophages were activated as indicated by their increased size and significant increases in numbers of cell organelles including profiles of rough endoplasmic reticulum (which also increased in length), mitochondria, primary and secondary lysosomes, bundles of Golgi's apparatus, and free lysosomes compared to macrophages from control mice. Some macrophages representing epithelioid cells have even greater numbers of organelles than the

Ixodes scapularis ticks are an important vector for at least seven tick-borne human pathogens, including a North American Lyme disease spirochete, Borrelia burgdorferi. The ability for these ticks to survive in nature is credited, in part, to their ability to feed on a variety of hosts without triggering an immune response capable of preventing tick feeding. While the ability of nymphal ticks to feed on a variety of hosts has been well documented, the host-parasite interactions between larval I. scapularis and different vertebrate hosts are relatively unexplored. Here we report on the changes

The ability for these ticks to survive in nature is credited, in part, to their ability to feed on a variety of hosts without excessive activation of the proinflammatory branch of the vertebrate immune system. Borrelia burgdorferi, a Lyme disease spirochete, causes a range of acute and chronic maladies in humans. However, a primary vertebrate reservoir in the United States, the white-footed deermouse Peromyscus leucopus, is reported not to have reduced fitness following infection. Although laboratory strains of Mus musculus mice have successfully been leveraged to model acute human Lyme disease, the ability of these rodents to model B. burgdorferi-P. leucopus interactions remains understudied. Here, we compared infection of P. leucopus with B. burgdorferi B31 with infection of the traditional B. bur

There is a growing body of evidence that the rapid but transient increase in male androgens, particularly testosterone (T), following a single social encounter such as a territorial intrusion occurs in a wide array of vertebrate taxa. Yet, this phenomenon, often called the Challenge Hypothesis, has rarely been investigated in females. Moreover, when studying male challenge effects, researchers have rarely investigated other hormones that can be important to the expression of aggression, such as progesterone (P4) and estradiol (E2). We conducted 10-min aggression trials using the resident-intru

Lyme disease spirochetes are maintained in natural reservoirs before spilling over into human populations. Targeting these reservoirs with vaccinations or antibiotics could impact the Borrelia burgdorferi enzootic cycle and reduce the risk of human Lyme disease. In this work we report that the narrow-spectrum antibiotic hygromycin A is sufficient to disrupt B burgdorferi transmission from the main eastern US reservoir, Peromyscus leucopus, to ticks. Additionally, hygromycin A-containing baits can clear B burgdorferi from P leucopus. These studies lay the foundation for the use of hygromycin A

The North American Deermouse, Peromyscus maniculatus, is one of the most widespread and abundant mammals on the continent. It is of public health interest as a known host of several viruses that are transmissible to humans and can cause illness, including the acute respiratory disease Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS). However, recent taxonomic studies indicate that P. maniculatus is a complex of multiple species, raising questions about how to identify and interpret three decades of hantavirus monitoring data. We conducted a systematic review investigating the prevalence and spatial distrib

California mice (Peromyscus californicus) are an important model species for studying social behaviors that are not readily expressed in standard laboratory mouse and rat lines. Under natural conditions, this species is highly territorial, and both males and females exhibit high levels of aggression in laboratory conditions. Like other rodent species, fighting among cage-mates can create animal welfare problems for California mice. Here we tested whether the use of partial cage dividers could reduce the impact of cage-mate fighting in California mice. Partial cage dividers were made of polycar

Peromyscus leucopus, the white-footed mouse, is one of the more abundant mammals of North America and is a major reservoir host for at least five tickborne diseases of humans, including Lyme disease and a newly-recognized form of relapsing fever. In comparison to Mus musculus, which is not a natural reservoir for any of these infections, there has been little research on experimental infections in P. leucopus. With the aim of further characterizing the diversity of phenotypes of host responses, we studied a selection of quantitative traits in colony-bred and -reared outbred P. leucopus adults

Trichinella spiralis is a parasitic nematode that infects many mammals, including humans. Hosts may experience significant physiological changes or may die because of acute inflammatory immune responses toward the parasite. In this study, oldfield mice (Peromyscus polionotus) were used as a new experimental host for T. spiralis. Males of P. polionotus were infected with increasing doses of T. spiralis to determine the effect infection had on survival, mass change, total mass, and relative organ masses. Total juvenile worm burden increased in an asymptotic fashion with infective dose. Large dos

Two levels of 3 factors, (1) host age, (2) host dietary state in regard to vitamin A, and (3) previous infestation history, were tested individually and in combinations for their effects on the susceptibility of Peromyscus leucopus to infestation by larvae of the rodent bot fly, Cuterebra fontinella. Previous infestation was the only significant single factor. Previously uninfested (Pu) mice usually were more susceptible to infestation than previously infested (Pi) mice. Interactions of age and state of vitamin A had the following effects: 1) Young Pu mice that had been denied vitamin A were m

Lyme disease continues to be the most common vector-borne disease in the United States with an estimated 330,000 human cases annually. In the eastern United States, the blacklegged tick, Ixodes scapularis, is the primary vector of the Lyme disease spirochete, Borrelia burgdorferi, and the white-footed mouse, Peromyscus leucopus, is a primary reservoir host. In four residential neighborhoods in Connecticut over three years, we tested the effectiveness of different low-toxicity integrated tick management approaches to control larval and nymphal I. scapularis parasitizing P. leucopus. Combination

A method applying high-resolution melt (HRM) analysis to PCR products copied and amplified from extracellular RNA (exRNA) has been developed to distinguish two morphologically similar Peromyscus species: Peromyscus leucopus and Peromyscus maniculatus. P. leucopus is considered the primary reservoir host of Borrelia burgdorferi, the causative agent for Lyme disease in North America. In northern Minnesota the habitat ranges of P. leucopus overlaps with that of P. maniculatus. Serum samples from live mice of both species were collected from cheek bleeds, total extracellular RNA (exRNA) was extrac

The pathogenesis of vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) infection has not been investigated previously in native New World rodents that may have a role in the epidemiology of the disease. In the present study, 45 juvenile and 80 adult deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus) were inoculated intranasally with VSV New Jersey serotype (VSV-NJ) and examined sequentially over a 7-day period. Virus was detected by means of immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization in all tissues containing histologic lesions. Viral antigen and mRNA were observed initially in olfactory epithelium neurons, followed by olf
