BACKGROUND: Cultivating empathy towards persons with disabilities has been highlighted as an essential graduate attribute in the occupational therapy profession.
PURPOSE: With the aim to developing a more holistic understanding of disability, this project seeks to translate an experiential learning activity developed in Canada to the local Singaporean context. Small groups of two to three students were paired with a person with physical disability, known as a community teacher, for a series of visits to observe and participate in their self-care, productivity and leisure activities.

Special care in dentistry : official publication of the American Association of Hospital Dentists, the Academy of Dentistry for the Handicapped, and the American Society for Geriatric Dentistry2000eng
The objective of this investigation was to generate a medical and dental profile of patients attending the Mount Sinai Hospital Dental Program for Persons with Disabilities, to determine if certain selected criteria could identify patients likely to require dental care in that setting. The need for dental care under general anesthesia was used as the prime indicator that care should be provided in a hospital setting. A retrospective review of all the charts of the patients enrolled in this hospital program was undertaken. Results indicated that patients who were treated in this hospital-based

The Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) has been identified as a milestone in human rights protection, offering people with psychosocial disabilities the opportunity to hold their governments accountable for the realization of their rights. To facilitate such accountability, the country reports produced under the CRPD reporting process should adequately reflect these persons' experiences and relevant positive or negative developments in the country. Our study used content analysis to review the extent and quality of reporting related to mental health and psychosocial d

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the hospitalisation rate of adults with severe/profound intellectual disability (PID) presenting at emergency services or about the appropriateness of hospital admissions in this population. Examining the possible differences in the patterns of hospitalisation between people with PID and those without intellectual disability (ID) may shed light on aspects of health and illness in these patients and may in turn make it possible to differentiate more clearly between mild-moderate ID and PID.
METHODS: After an evaluation of the emergency visits made by adults wi

Throughout its history, laboratory research in the experimental analysis of behavior has been successful in elucidating and clarifying basic learning principles and processes in both humans and nonhumans. In parallel, applied behavior analysis has shown how fundamental behavior-analytic principles and procedures can be employed to promote desirable forms of behavior and to prevent or ameliorate undesirable forms in clinical, educational, and other settings. Less obviously, there has also emerged a small but identifiable bridging field that can potentially connect and inform both basic and appl

BACKGROUND: Persons with mobility disabilities (PwMD) face more secondary health complications than the general population and are one of the least physically active groups in the United States leading to costly health care utilization and decreased functional engagement. It is possible that a myriad of negative health outcomes could be reduced by increased physical activity (PA) engagement. Despite frequent interaction with PwMD, it is unclear how healthcare providers (HCPs) are promoting PA within the current healthcare landscape.
OBJECTIVE: The objective of this research study was to explo

Airports present a uniquely complex environment for travelers with disabilities, where the promise of global mobility often collides with persistent physical, sensory, and procedural barriers. This scoping review synthesizes peer-reviewed and gray literature to examine the physical environment of airports and how it shapes access for persons with disabilities, including the interaction between spatial features and service-related components in real-world travel situations. Guided by Fougeyrollas's five-dimensional framework of access availability, accessibility, acceptability, affordability, a

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Adults with intellectual disability are known to experience complex health needs, including an elevated presence of chronic conditions. Cardiovascular risk factors are a concern, yet the evidence base is fragmented, and the scope and focus of current research are not well understood.
METHODS: We conducted a scoping review to map the existing evidence on cardiovascular risk factors among adults with intellectual disability. The review included studies reporting on risk factor prevalence as well as participant characteristics (ethnicity, living arrangements, age, sex, and

Access and uptake of COVID-19 vaccine by persons with disabilities remains largely unknown in low-and middle-income countries, despite the unique barriers they face, their special vulnerabilities and higher risk to severe outcomes. We aimed to identify behavioral and social predictors of COVID-19 uptake among persons with disability in Kenya. A convergent parallel mixed method study design was conducted among 792 persons with disability in four regions (counties) in Kenya. Purposive sampling was used to identify the respondents from the National Council for Persons with Disabilities Registrati

PURPOSE: User participation is important in the delivery of health- and social services. Yet, our knowledge regarding how user participation is experienced from the perspective of those who use these services is limited. This study aims to develop knowledge regarding how young persons living with disabilities experience becoming independent in user participation.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This qualitative study is inspired by Constructivist Grounded Theory. Nine young persons between 16 and 25 years of age and living with a disability, participated in the interviews.
RESULTS: The results reveal

Over the life course, persons with disabilities require a range of supports to be integrated into their communities, to participate in activities that are meaningful and necessary, and to have access, on an equal basis to persons without disabilities, to community living. We conducted a scoping review of the peer-reviewed and grey literature on community support for persons with disabilities in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). The main findings of this review concern the following: there are gaps in access to community support for persons with disabilities in LMICs; there are barriers

For the occupational adaptation and social integration of the intellectually disabled, it is helpful to improve their work performance and interpersonal skills. The purpose of the study was to evaluate the effectiveness of horticultural therapy (HT) programs to improve work performance and interpersonal relationships of persons with intellectual disabilities. Based on observations and analyses of how people with intellectual disabilities work, we have developed a 12-session HT program that includes upper limb movements and physical activities to improve hand function. We recruited, with the co

When working with individuals with little or no functional speech, clinicians often recommend that communication partners use the client's augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) device when speaking to the client. This is broadly known as "augmented input" and is thought to enhance the client's learning of language form and content. The purpose of this systematic review was to determine the effects of augmented input on communication outcomes in persons with developmental disabilities and persons with childhood apraxia of speech who use aided AAC. Nineteen studies met the inclusion c

This study assessed the accessibility of a nationally representative sample of substance abuse treatment facilities in the United States for persons with disabilities (PWDs). A stratified random sample of 159 substance abuse treatment facilities in 40 states completed a survey regarding physical accessibility and the provision of services that could enhance the ability to serve individuals with disabilities. Most responding facilities self-reported a variety of barriers to physical accessibility, as well as the lack of services and physical accommodations for persons with sensory limitations.

BACKGROUND: Compared to the general population, persons with disabilities are at increased risk of poor mental health. The aim of this study was to determine the rates and correlates of psychological distress and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among persons with physical disabilities in Cambodia.
METHODS: From July to December 2021 data were collected as part of a mental health screening programme for persons with physical disabilities who access prosthetic and orthotic services. Psychological distress was measured using the Kessler-10 (K-10) and PTSD using the PC-PTSD-5. Bivariate and

Disability has too often been peripheral to efforts to widen the STEMM pipeline, hampering research quality and innovation. Inspired by change in education delivery and research collaborations during the pandemic, we offer a structure for efforts to recruit and retain disabled scientists and practitioners.
