This article examines how deaf students and interpreters experience positioning within mainstream educational settings, with a focus on environments where a critical mass-defined as multiple deaf students and interpreters-is present. Drawing on interviews with 41 formerly mainstreamed deaf individuals and interpreters, the study explores how critical mass influences engagement, participation, and perceived membership in the school community. Findings suggest that critical mass enhances access to Deaf Community Cultural Wealth (DCCW) and fosters collaborative positioning. These environments str

Deciding on an educational setting for children who are deaf or hard of hearing (DHH) is a complex process that is not well understood. In the present study, the researchers' objective was to understand the factors caregivers consider when choosing a school for their child. Six caregivers of children who were DHH participated in semistructured interviews, which were coded into three themes (Child-Centered, Familial, School) and five subthemes (Inclusion, Additional Needs and Well-Being, Complex Process, Information Input and Flow, School Systems and Personnel). An unexpected theme (On Reflecti

For deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) children living in an environment where their access to linguistic input and social interactions is compromised, learning emotions could be difficult, which may further affect social functioning. To understand the role of emotion in DHH children's social life, this study investigated emotional functioning (i.e., emotion recognition, empathy, emotion expression), and its relation with social functioning (i.e., social competence and externalizing behaviors), in 55 DHH children and 74 children with typical hearing (aged 3-10 years; Mage = 6.04). Parental reports

This article explores the perspectives on the acquisition and maintenance of heritage sign language in Spain among heritage signers themselves and sign language teachers, focusing on how such perspectives influence the use of a heritage sign language. The data analyzed draws on 22 semi-structured interviews with hearing adults who were children of deaf adults (CODA) and 5 deaf Spanish sign language teachers in Spain. Methodologically, an interpretive approach is applied to the data through a thematic analysis. This study shows that the contrast between the linguistic and communicative competen

The development of literacy skills of d/Deaf and hard of hearing (d/Dhh) children and adolescents has been a long-standing challenge for educators. There is a need for researchers and scholars to investigate this challenge to proffer evidence-based practices. This systematic review focuses on the development of reading for both d/Dhh and, for comparison purposes, typical (hearing) Turkish students. The components under study are the structures of the Turkish language, specifically the interrelations of phonology, morphology, and reading comprehension. Although it is argued that both phonology

This study addressed the critical gap in research on the academic English vocabulary knowledge of deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) students at the college level, with a specific focus on academic English verbs. An English vocabulary test was developed to assess knowledge of academic verbs at three distinct corpus-defined lexical frequency ranges. The test was administered to the DHH students along with two comparison groups of college peers-students of English as an Additional Language (EAL)1 and hearing native-English-speaking students. Results revealed near-ceiling performance by hearing nativ

The effect of age per se on auditory disability in relation to other non-auditory factors, including personality and IQ, is unclear because of the close link with hearing threshold level. Auditory disability may be assessed in terms of either performance or self-report. It was measured using two tasks identifying words in sentences: (1) sentence identification in noise for spatially separated signal sources, and (2) identification of sensible and nonsensical sentences given at normal and artificially accelerated rates. Self-reported disability was assessed using the MRC Institute of Hearing Re

BACKGROUND: On March 11, 2020, the World Health Organization declared COVID-19 to be a global pandemic. This prompted many countries, including Saudi Arabia, to suspend students' attendance at schools and to start distance education. This sudden shift in the educational system has affected students' learning, particularly for d/Deaf and hard-of-hearing (d/Dhh) students, who have unique language and communication needs.
AIM: This study explores the challenges and support methods for d/Dhh students during their distance education in Saudi Arabia.
METHODS: A qualitative research study using sem

Collaboration between teachers of students who are deaf and hard of hearing (TSDHH) and educational audiologists is essential when developing successful, comprehensive service delivery plans for students who are deaf and hard of hearing. Despite the importance, little is known about how these two professions work together. This study sought to describe the current state of collaboration between educational audiologists and TSDHH and to explore the barriers and facilitators to this collaboration. Anonymous survey responses from 752 educational audiologists and TSDHH showed that collaboration is

Japan passed a law that eliminated discrimination against persons with disabilities in 2016. Health care providers must comply with this law and are required to deepen their understanding of disabilities and take action to eliminate discrimination based on a higher level of awareness. Pharmacists need to better understand hearing disabilities to effectively communicate and provide medication education to deaf and hard of hearing (HH). This study examined the understanding about deaf and HH communities and the effects of learning through a lecture and hearing loss simulation experiences on 151

BACKGROUND: Deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) people are an underserved population and underrepresented among healthcare professionals. A major barrier to success for DHH healthcare professionals is obtaining effective accommodations during education and employment. Our objective: describe DHH individuals' experiences with accommodations in healthcare education.
METHODS: We used an online survey and multipronged snowball sampling to recruit participants who identify as DHH and who had applied to a U.S. health professional school (regardless of acceptance status). One hundred forty-eight individu

This article explores the interpreter's role and approaches to working with deaf students as seen from deaf individuals' and interpreters' perspectives. A group of 41 formerly mainstreamed deaf individuals and interpreters offered insights into how the interpreter's role in mainstream classrooms influences deaf student autonomy and participation. This research illustrates the significance of autonomy for mainstreamed deaf students and suggests a correlation between the interpreter's role and deaf students' perceived autonomy in the classroom. In addition, the findings suggest that deaf student

Immersive technologies are increasingly used in education, yet their role in supporting the diverse communication and learning needs of d/Deaf and hard of hearing (d/Dhh) learners remains underexamined. This PRISMA-guided systematic review synthesizes evidence on how augmented reality, virtual reality, mixed reality, extended reality, and metaverse-based environments are applied in d/Dhh education. Searches of five databases (Scopus, Web of Science, IEEE Xplore, ACM Digital Library, and Google Scholar; 2014-2024) identified 30 studies (21 empirical, nine conceptual/design-focused). Data were s

Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) have little formal education related to the needs of deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) children who use a signed language and often report feeling underprepared to work with this population. Although a small subset of SLPs specialize in working with DHH children, the majority of DHH children are served by generalist SLPs without specialized training. We surveyed 50 SLPs (26 self-reported DHH specialists) to better understand SLPs' awareness of common myths or misunderstandings about issues related to DHH children and signed language. For 13/22 statements (59%),

This study explores the writing performance of deaf high school students, focusing on narrative, argumentative, and argumentative-with-sources genres, and examining the role of expressive language proficiency and early language exposure. Using a descriptive research design, the writing samples of 75 students were scored for idea development, organization, style, sentence fluency, word choice, and conventions using automated scoring. Results revealed a range of low to mid performance, with the argumentative-with-sources writing scoring similarly to narrative writing and showing incremental grow

The discussion on the role of American Sign Language (ASL) in deaf students' reading development has been long and contentious. The students' limited knowledge of English has been commonly perceived as a culprit in making reading difficult. However, a more nuanced explanation of reading performance and its relationship with competence in ASL's potential role is needed. In the present study, multivariate analyses of the variance in the ASL and English comprehension performance of 91 middle school students at an ASL-English bilingual school revealed some important insights. Inference-making skil
