Effectiveness of personal protective equipment: relevance of dermal and inhalation exposure to chlorpyrifos among pest control operators.

This study assessed the effectiveness of a custom fit personal protective equipment (PPE) program aimed at reducing occupational exposure to pesticides. The intervention study was carried out on 15 pest control operators (PCOs) during mixing/loading and application of chlorpyrifos. Each worker was measured twice; first while the worker used PPE as normal (baseline measurement), and second after making some adjustments to the PPE (postintervention measurement). The applied intervention consisted of a tight-fitting, full-face respirator, fit-testing, long gloves, chemical-proof boots, a Tyvek ho

How population control of pests is modulated by density dependence: The perspective of genetic biocontrol.

Managing pest species relies critically on mechanisms that regulate population dynamics, particularly those factors that change with population size. These density-dependent factors can help or hinder control efforts and are especially relevant considering recent advances in genetic techniques that allow for precise manipulation of the timing and sex-specificity of population suppression. Despite this importance, density dependence is often poorly characterized owing to limited data and an incomplete understanding of organism development. To address this issue, we construct and analyze a mathe

Semiochemical-Mediated Host-Searching and Biological Control Potential of Trichogramma Wasps: Mechanisms, Behavioral Plasticity, and Pest Management Applications.

Globally, Trichogramma Westwood (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae) is known as the most effective biological control agent due to its ability to parasitize insect pest eggs. However, identifying an appropriate host is vital for Trichogramma to prosper. Therefore, this study delves into the complex role of semiochemicals in shaping the host-seeking behavior of Trichogramma parasitoids, with a particular focus on their responses to both plant-derived and host-derived cues. The mechanism of semiochemical reception in Trichogramma wasps relies on a highly specialized, sensitive olfactory and gustato

Optimization of UAV Spraying Parameters for Pepper Pest Control Based on Droplet Deposition Characteristics and Multi-Indicator Evaluation.

Improving pesticide application efficiency in dense pepper canopies requires optimization of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) operational parameters based on both droplet deposition and pest control performance. This study evaluated the effects of flight height and nominal droplet size setting on canopy deposition characteristics and pest control efficacy using a DJI T60 plant protection UAV under field conditions. Three flight heights (2, 3, and 4 m) and five nominal droplet size settings (100, 150, 200, 250, and 300 µm) were investigated. Droplet coverage, deposition density, canopy penetration

Control of the Invasive Agricultural Pest Pomacea canaliculata with a Novel Molluscicide: Efficacy and Safety to Nontarget Species.

The golden apple snail Pomacea canaliculata is an invasive pest that causes extensive damage to agricultural production. P. canaliculata is also an intermediate host of Angiostrongylus cantonensis, which causes human eosinophilic meningitis. In this study, the molluscicidal activity and safety profile of a novel molluscicide PBQ [1-(4-chlorophenyl)-3-(pyridin-3-yl)urea] were evaluated. PBQ exhibited strong molluscicidal potency against adult and juvenile snails (LC50 values of 0.39 and 0.07 mg/L, respectively). In field trials, PBQ killed 99.42% of the snails at 0.25 g a.i./m2. An acute toxici

Computational and biological characterization of fusion proteins of two insecticidal proteins for control of insect pests.

Sucking pests pose a serious agricultural challenge, as available transgenic technologies such as Bacillus thuringiensis crystal toxins (Bt) are not effective against them. One approach is to produce fusion protein toxins for the control of these pests. Two protein toxins, Hvt (ω-atracotoxin from Hadronyche versuta) and onion leaf lectin, were translationally fused to evaluate the negative effects of fusion proteins on Phenacoccus solenopsis (mealybug), a phloem-feeding insect pest. Hvt was cloned both N-terminally (HL) and then C-terminally (LH) in the fusion protein constructs, which were ex

Global distribution of peste des petits ruminants virus and prospects for improved diagnosis and control.

Viral diseases of farm animals, rather than being a diminishing problem across the world, are now appearing with regularity in areas where they have never been seen before. Across the developing world, viral pathogens such as peste des petits ruminants virus (PPRV) place a huge disease burden on agriculture, in particular affecting small ruminant production and in turn increasing poverty in some of the poorest parts of the world. PPRV is currently considered as one of the main animal transboundary diseases that constitutes a threat to livestock production in many developing countries, particul

Integrating Epidemiology, Immunology, and Host Genetics for Controlling Peste des Petits Ruminants in Goats.

Peste des petits ruminants (PPR) is a highly contagious transboundary viral disease of sheep and goats that causes major economic losses and livelihood disruption across Africa, the Middle East, and Asia. Goats are often more severely affected than sheep, particularly in endemic smallholder systems, where high turnover, nutritional stress, and limited veterinary infrastructure sustain viral transmission. Despite effective live attenuated vaccines and the ongoing FAO-WOAH Global Eradication Programme, PPR remains widely distributed, indicating that vaccination alone is insufficient without unde

Disruption of Host-Symbiont Associations for the Symbiotic Control and Management of Pentatomid Agricultural Pests-A Review.

The family Pentatomidae (Hemiptera: Heteroptera) includes several invasive stink bug species capable to attack a large number of wild and cultivated plants, causing several damages to different crops. Pentatomids rely on obligate symbiotic associations with bacteria of the family Enterobacteriaceae, mainly of the genus Pantoea. A distinctive trait of these associations is the transmission route: during oviposition, females smear egg masses with symbiont-containing secretions, which are ingested by newly hatched nymphs, allowing the symbiont to pass through their digestive tract and establish i

Size-tunable carboxymethyl chitosan enabled nanoplatform of spinosad: Efficient pest control, enhanced plant growth, and reduced residues in soil.

Nanopesticide delivery systems represent a promising strategy to enhance pesticide utilization efficiency. Employing bioactive natural polymers as carriers enables the development of multifunctional nanoplatforms for sustainable agriculture. Herein, a series of size-tunable nanosuspensions of spinosad was fabricated using carboxymethyl chitosan as the carrier. Leaf-dipping bioassay revealed its size-dependent toxicity to Plutella xylostella, with a critical efficacy threshold at ∼300 nm. The nanosuspension with a minimum particle size of 188 nm achieved an encapsulation efficiency of 94.1% and

Detection of Leptospira in Urban Swedish Rats: Pest Control Interventions as a Promising Source of Rats Used for Surveillance.

Rat carcasses obtained from pest control interventions can potentially be used for an efficient surveillance of zoonotic diseases such as leptospirosis. To evaluate the performance of different laboratory methods for detection of pathogenic Leptospira spp., heart and kidney samples from wild Norway rats were analyzed by microscopic agglutination test (MAT, the gold standard), a commercial IgG enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, and by an optimized quantitative PCR (secY qPCR, followed by sequencing). We found secY qPCR to be as sensitive as MAT for screening of Leptospira infection in pest cont

Bacteriocyte-specific antimicrobial peptides regulate the Rhynchophorus ferrugineus-Nardonella symbiosis and represent novel targets for symbiosis-based pest control.

BACKGROUND: Many beetles require tyrosine supplementation from endosymbiotic bacteria for exoskeleton synthesis. Weevils harbor the ancient endosymbiont Nardonella within specialized bacteriocytes, a mutualistic association maintained for >125 million years in which the bacterium exclusively preserves tyrosine biosynthetic capability. The red palm weevil, one of the world's most destructive invasive pests causing widespread devastation to palm industries across continents, depends on its Nardonella endosymbiont for survival. Disrupting this obligate symbiosis represents a promising pest contro

Herbivore pest under combined plant extract and cadmium effect, the case of Spodoptera exigua from control and cadmium strain.

Secondary plant substances like flavonoids found in host plant tissues or/and environmental contaminants, like cadmium, can pose a common challenge for polyphagous herbivore pests. Earlier pre-exposure experience, with specific stressor, lasting even through many generations may affect the response to the other stressor. In this study, combined the effect of cadmium and extracts of some common spices (ordered according to total flavonoid content: lovage > mentha > basilium), on Spodoptera exigua larvae from two strains, control, and cadmium (selected with a sublethal concentration of cadmium f

Impact of Temperature and Soil Moisture on the Life Cycle of the Strawberry Pest Priophorus fulvostigmatus and Its Control.

Priophorus fulvostigmatus, a species of leaf-cutter wasp, is an important leaf-feeding pest on strawberries. We investigated the effects of temperature and soil moisture content on key life cycle parameters of P. fulvostigmatus. The development time, survival, fecundity, and life table parameters of P. fulvostigmatus were observed at five temperatures. Pupal development and survival under five moisture contents (8%, 12%, 16%, 20%, and 24%) and four durations of water immersion (0, 1, 3, and 5 d) were recorded. P. fulvostigmatus could complete its life cycle at a constant temperature range of 1

Understanding crop performance and pest control under climate change requires considering interactions among warming, elevated CO2, and trophic interactions.

Investigating the combined effects of climate change and species interactions on species advances climate change research. However, such combined effects are understudied and may defy current hypotheses that focus on individual effects. We empirically examined how multiple environmental stressors (elevated temperature and CO2) and trophic interactions (herbivory and predation) interactively affect crop performance and pest control in a tri-trophic agroecosystem including soybean (Glycine max), aphid (Aphis glycines), and ladybeetle (Coccinella septempunctata). Temperature (control/+2 °C/+4 °C)

Considerations in developing an integrated pest management programme for control of sea lice on farmed salmon in Pacific Canada.

In the development of integrated pest management (IPM) plans for the control of sea lice there are some components that are common to many areas. However, effective plans must be tailored to regionally varying environmental and biological factors affecting the severity of sea lice infections. This paper describes factors that would be involved in the development of an IPM plan for sea lice in the Broughton Archipelago, British Columbia. Temperature, salinity and currents affect the production, dispersion and competence of larvae of sea lice, Lepeophtheirus salmonis (Krøyer), as they develop to

[Increased mortality from esophageal cancer, stomach cancer and skin melanoma in pesticide-exposed pest control operators in the DDR].

A retrospective mortality study on male pest control workers of the German Democratic Republic (GDR) was undertaken to evaluate the association of exposure to pesticides and development of malignant tumors. The cohort encompassed 1,214 male subjects with at least 5 years pest control work between 1945 and 1980. Informations on causes of death and cancer cases were obtained from death certificates and the cancer registry form. As control cohort for the standardized mortality ratios (SMR) served the general male population of the GDR. The SMR of 133 for the category of malignant tumors in the pe

Targeted control of the saddle gall midge, Haplodiplosis marginata (von Roser) (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae), and the benefits of good control of this pest to winter wheat yield.

BACKGROUND: Since 2010 there has been a resurgence of the saddle gall midge, Haplodiplosis marginata (von Roser), in Belgium and several other European countries, with this pest sometimes causing severe damage in cereals. In 2012 and 2013, field trials were conducted in heavily infested fields to assess its impact on winter wheat crops and to determine efficient ways of dealing with severe infestations. RESULTS: Crop exposure to H. marginata varied with the different protection methods tried. These methods included 1-4 successive applications of lambda-cyhalothrin. Yield losses were significa

The Spodoptera frugiperda Host Strains: What They Are and Why They Matter for Understanding and Controlling This Global Agricultural Pest.

Fall armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda [J.E. Smith]) is a moth native to the Western Hemisphere where it is a major pest of corn (maize) and multiple other crops. It is now a global threat with its recent discovery and dissemination in the Eastern Hemisphere. Its broad host range is in part due to two subpopulations denoted as 'host strains' that differ in host plant specificity. Therefore, identifying the strains present in a location is critical to assessing what crops are at risk of infestation. However, much remains uncertain about how the strains differ and even on the fundamental issue of
