The fall armyworm Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) is a notorious invasive pest wreaking havoc on various crops globally. Nucleopolyhedroviruses (NPVs) are viral pathogens that specially target lepidopteran pests. However, the homologous virus, Spodoptera frugiperda multiple nucleopolyhedrovirus (SfMNPV), has not been commercialized in China. Therefore, understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying heterologous virus-host interactions can inform the design of virus-based insecticides for controlling S. frugiperda. The pathogenicity of the four heterologous NPVs o

Cashew (Anacardium occidentale L.) is a very important source of income for more than 200,000 farmer households in Vietnam. The present cashew productivity in Vietnam is low and unstable, and pest damage is partly responsible for this. Cashew farmers rely on pesticides to minimize the damage, resulting in adverse impacts on farm environment and farmers' health. Weaver ants (Oecophylla spp) are effective biocontrol agents of a range of cashew insect pests in several cashew-growing countries, and these ants are widely distributed in Vietnam. The aim of this study is to evaluate the potential of

We conducted a systematic search of the literature to identify publications on the safety of exposure to Salmonella-based rodenticides by humans and animals. We included full-text publications that described the methods and presented their results satisfactorily. Of 545 publications retrieved, 47 were reviewed in full text and from those 12 were selected. Six reports featured cases of salmonellosis in humans, with fatal cases, associated with exposure to previous versions of this type of rodenticide. A clinical trial reported an increased frequency of diarrhea and fever in the group that inges

Oriental fruit fly, Bactrocera dorsalis (Hendel) (Diptera: Tephritidae), was discovered on Tahiti Island in July 1996. Eradication programs were conducted from 1997 to 2001, but failed. From 1998 to 2006, B. dorsalis was recovered from 29 different host fruit from the five Society Islands: Tahiti, Moorea, Raiatea, Tahaa, and Huahine. Analysis of coinfestation patterns by B. dorsalis, Bactrocera tryoni (Froggatt), and Bactrocera kirki (Froggatt) suggested B. dorsalis had displaced these two species and become the most abundant fruit fly in coastal areas. To suppress B. dorsalis populations, a c

The parasitism efficiency of the Braconidae wasp, Diachasmimorpha longicaudata (Ashmead), was checked on four guava cultivars (Paluma, Sassaoca, Pedro Sato and Kumagai) infested with larvae of medfly, Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann) (Diptera: Tephritidae). Five blocks of eight fruits, each with two fruits of each cultivar, were put inside C. capitata adult cages, during 2h for oviposition, and a week later, when the larvae inside guavas were developed, the fruits were exposed to parasitoids for 24h. The mean fruit weight, larvae mortality, number of pupae, percentage of medfly and parasitoid em

Mussidia nigrivenella Ragonot is a pest of maize cobs in West Africa. It significantly reduces maize yields and grain quality, with quantitative losses of 2-25%at harvest, and up to 10-15% indirect losses due to an increase in storage pest infestation levels. Infestation by M. nigrivenella also significantly increased the susceptibility of maize to Aspergillus flavus infection and subsequent aflatoxin contamination. Surveys conducted in different agro-ecological zones of Benin on cultivated and wild host plants during 1994-1997 revealed one egg parasitoid, three larval parasitoids and one pupa

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a significant opportunistic pathogen affecting both humans and aquaculture animals. However, there has been no documented evidence linking P. aeruginosa to hepatopancreatic necrosis disease in Chinese mitten crabs Eriocheir sinensis. In the present study, P. aeruginosa isolate HX-1 was identified as a causative agent of hepatopancreatic necrosis disease in E. sinensis, and its pathogenic characteristics in terms of pathogenicity-related genes, antimicrobial resistance profiles, and virulence was comprehensively analyzed. Additionally, the in vitro and in vivo efficaci

Sterile Insect Technique (SIT) applications against major insect pests and disease vectors rely on the cost-effective production of high-quality sterile males. This largely depends on the optimal management of target pest colonies by maximizing the benefits provided by a genetically rich and pathogen-free mother colony, the presence of symbiotic microorganisms, and efficient domestication, mass-rearing, irradiation, and release processes. At the same time microbial (bacteria, fungi, microsporidia, and viruses) pathogen outbreaks should be minimized or eliminated, and the use of hazardous chemi

Spodoptera frugiperda, known as the fall armyworm, is a highly destructive pest that greatly impacts worldwide agriculture, particularly maize and other key crops. Its rapid expansion and resistance to standard insecticides pose a significant threat to food security. As a result, effective and long-term pest management solutions are required. In this context, microbial biocontrol agents, such as Saccharomyces cerevisiae, offer an environmentally friendly alternative to chemical pesticides. This study investigates S. cerevisiae's efficiency as a biocontrol agent against S. frugiperda. The S. ce

The grey maize weevil, Tanymecus dilaticollis, is a polyphagous species, which is among the most important pests of maize in Southeastern Europe. The efficacy of commercial products with two species of entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs), Steinernema carpocapsae and Heterorhabditis bacteriophora, was investigated against adults of the grey maize weevil under laboratory conditions. Nemastar®, containing S. carpocapsae was more effective on T. dilaticollis adults than Nematop® containing H. bacteriophora, when applied uniformly to the surface of the soil, on Petri dishes containing T. dilaticollis

Global biodiversity has suffered a decline primarily attributed to landscape simplification and intensified agricultural practices. Agricultural environments, characterized by homogeneity and frequent disturbances, are often suboptimal habitats for various insect species. While agricultural fields do favour pests, they generally fail to provide suitable habitats for natural enemies. The inclusion of diverse supporting habitats, such as semi-natural habitats, grassy and woody field margins etc. surrounding agricultural fields, play a crucial role in fostering effective biodiversity conservation

The continuing need to protect food and fiber production to address the demands of an expanding global population requires new pest management tools for crop protection. Natural products (NPs) have been and continue to be a key source of inspiration for new active ingredients (AIs) for crop protection, accounting for 17% of all crop protection AIs. However, potentially 50% of all crop protection compounds have or could have a NP origin if NP synthetic equivalents (NPSEs, synthetic compounds discovered by other approaches but for which a NP model also happens to exist) are also considered. The

The sterile insect technique (SIT), used to control different species of tephritid fruit flies (Diptera: Tephritidae), is an important element in sustainable agriculture because of its low negative impact on the environment. In SIT, flies are mass produced and sterilized in the laboratory and then released in a target area. However, once released, laboratory flies may confront harass environments that would reduce their performance and consequently SIT efficiency. Selecting flies that resist stressful conditions may help to improve the efficiency of the SIT by releasing males that resist desic

Entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs) and fungi (EPF) are well known biological control agents (BCAs) against insect pests. Similarly, the nematophagous fungi (NF) are considered good BCA candidates for controlling plant parasitic nematodes. Because NF can employ EPNs as food and interact with EPF, we speculate that the simultaneous application of EPNs and EPF might result in higher insect mortality, whereas the triple species combination with NF will reduce the EPN and EPF activity by predation or inhibition. Here we evaluated single, dual (EPN + EPF, EPF + NF, EPN + NF) and triple (EPN + EPF + N

Coffee berry borer (CBB) is the Worlds most devastating coffee pest causing an estimated US$500 million worth of losses annually through damage and control costs. Beauveria bassiana and Metarhizium anisopliae have been employed to control this pest but their low virulence (slow kill and large inoculums) is an important factor constraining their use. M. anisopliae (AaIT-Ma549) has been modified to express the scorpion toxin (AaIT) in insect hemolymph and this greatly increased pathogenicity against Manduca sexta and Aedes aegypti. Here, we demonstrate that AaIT-Ma549 was also dramatically more

Tritrophic interactions involving cabbage Brassica oleracea var. capitata cultivars +/- fertilizer, Brevicoryne brassicae (Linnaeus) and Myzus persicae (Sulzer), and the parasitoids Diaeretiella rapae (M'cIntosh) and Aphidius sp. were conducted in 1998 and 1999. Brevicorne brassicae was the dominant aphid species on all cultivars +/- fertilizer, except for some treatments in late season 1998. Ruby Ball (red-leaved with antixenosis factors for B. brassicae alates) +/- fertilizer was consistently less colonized by aphids in early stages of plant growth, although only significantly so compared wi

A novel insecticide delivery tool, the Mossie-Buster, was recently developed to control larval populations from urban breeding sites in Townsville, Australia. This functional and user-friendly control device directly targets the main breeding sites of Aedes aegypti (L.) with a focused delivery of insecticides. The Mossie-Buster comprises a commercially available device and attachments that mix an insecticide solution into the flow of water emitted from a hose. Attached to the device is a trigger for controlled insecticide release. Preliminary laboratory and field trials demonstrated the tool t

Bioinsecticides with lower concentrations of endospores/crystals and without loss of efficiency are economically advantageous for pest biocontrol. In addition to Cry proteins, other Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) toxins in culture supernatants (SN) have biocontrol potential (e.g., Vip3A, Cry1I, Sip1), whereas others are unwanted (β-exotoxins), as they display widespread toxicity across taxa. A strain simultaneously providing distinct toxin activities in crystals and SN would be desirable for bioinsecticides development; however, strains secreting β-exotoxins should be discarded, independently of

Verticillium wilt, caused by Verticillium dahliae Kleb., is a destructive vascular disease that is difficult to control using chemical fungicides and remains a major challenge in plant disease management. Microbial biocontrol represents a sustainable alternative, and the identification of highly antagonistic strains against V. dahliae is of considerable importance. In this study, a strain of Talaromyces purpureogenus TS, which demonstrated strong antagonistic and mycoparasitic activity against V. dahliae, was isolated from soil. Its cell-free supernatant inhibited the growth of V. dahliae by d

Floral diseases of macadamia, such as raceme blight, are among the main limiting factors for crop production, and the low availability of registered products for phytosanitary management further aggravates this challenge. In this context, biocontrol agents emerge as a sustainable and effective alternative for integrated disease management. This study aimed to select antagonistic bacteria for the control of raceme blight in macadamia, caused by Cladosporium xanthochromaticum. For this purpose, bacteria were isolated from macadamia racemes, identified, and tested against the phytopathogen in bot
