Development and application of a suite of 4-D virtual breast phantoms for optimization and evaluation of breast imaging systems.

Mammography is currently the most widely utilized tool for detection and diagnosis of breast cancer. However, in women with dense breast tissue, tissue overlap may obscure lesions. Digital breast tomosynthesis can reduce tissue overlap. Furthermore, imaging with contrast enhancement can provide additional functional information about lesions, such as morphology and kinetics, which in turn may improve lesion identification and characterization. The performance of these imaging techniques is strongly dependent on the structural composition of the breast, which varies significantly among patients

Investigation of new flow modifying endovascular image-guided interventional (EIGI) techniques in patient-specific aneurysm phantoms (PSAPs) using optical imaging.

Effective minimally invasive treatment of cerebral bifurcation aneurysms is challenging due to the complex and remote vessel morphology. An evaluation of endovascular treatment in a phantom involving image-guided deployment of new asymmetric stents consisting of polyurethane patches placed to modify blood flow into the aneurysm is reported. The 3D lumen-geometry of a patient-specific basilar-artery bifurcation aneurysm was derived from a segmented computed-tomography dataset. This was used in a stereolithographic rapid-prototyping process to generate a mold which was then used to create any nu

Comparison of a GPS needle-tracking system, multiplanar imaging and 2D imaging for real-time ultrasound-guided epidural anaesthesia: A randomized, comparative, observer-blinded study on phantoms.

BACKGROUND: The real-time ultrasound-guided paramedian sagittal oblique approach for neuraxial blockade is technically demanding. Innovative technologies have been developed to improve nerve identification and the accuracy of needle placement. The aim of this study was to evaluate three types of ultrasound scans during ultrasound-guided epidural lumbar punctures in a spine phantom. METHODS: Eleven sets of 20 ultrasound-guided epidural punctures were performed with 2D, GPS, and multiplanar ultrasound machines (660 punctures) on a spine phantom using an in-plane approach. For all punctures, exe

Food-Grade Activated Charcoal for Contrast-Enhanced Photoacoustic Imaging of Aspiration: A Phantom Study.

Aspiration pneumonia has the highest attributable mortality of all medical complications post-stroke, or in individuals with progressive neurological diseases. For optimum health outcomes for individuals with dysphagia, a non-invasive and convenient method for objectively detecting aspiration is needed. This study introduces a potential new aspiration screening method based on photoacoustic imaging (PAI), a medical imaging technology that measures the optical contrast of tissue rather than mechanical or elastic properties. In this preliminary study, a tissue-mimicking neck phantom was designed

[Functional magnetic resonance imaging before motor cortex stimulation for phantom limb pain].

This study deals with the diagnostic value of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) in a patient with phantom limb pain following traumatic amputation of the right arm. After failure with medication, resection of stump neurinoma, and spinal cord stimulation, fMRI with evidence of cortical reorganization was performed. Tactile stimulation of the perioral region and motor imagery with cranial, tactile stimulation of the stump led to a caudal shift in fMRI activity. Subsequent motor cortex stimulation brought relief from the pain. By detecting cortical reorganization, fMRI contributes to t

Effects of optimization and image processing in digital chest radiography: an ROC study with an anthropomorphic phantom.

A digital system for chest radiography based on a large image intensifier was compared to a conventional film-screen system. The digital system was optimized with regard to spatial and contrast resolution and dose. The images were digitally processed for contrast and edge enhancement. A simulated pneumothorax and two simulated nodules were positioned over the lungs and the mediastinum of an anthropomorphic phantom. Observer performance was evaluated with ROC analysis. Five observers assessed the processed digital images and the conventional full-size radiographs. The time spent viewing the ful

Assessing the quality of deformable image registration in magnetic resonance image guided carbon ion liver radiotherapy with an anthropomorphic phantom.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Carbon ion radiotherapy (CIRT) for liver patients is usually administrated in four high-dose fractions, requiring high geometrical precision. Work is underway to implement online magnetic resonance (MR)-guided adaptive workflows for this indication. For the generation of a daily computed tomography (dCT), deformable image registration (DIR) can be used. Here, a study on a deformable anthropomorphic abdomen phantom was conducted to assess the accuracy of MR-to-CT DIR. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We applied eight different static compressions on the phantom to induce deformat

Robustness and reproducibility of radiomics in T2 weighted images from magnetic resonance image guided linear accelerator in a phantom study.

PURPOSE: Quantitative radiomics features extracted from medical images have been shown to provide value in predicting clinical outcomes. The study for robustness and reproducibility of radiomics features obtained with magnetic resonance image guided linear accelerator (MR-Linac) is insufficient. The objective of this work was to investigate the stability of radiomics features extracted from T2-weighted images of MR-Linac for five common effect factors. MATERIALS AND METHOD: In this work, ten jellies, five fruits/vegetables, and a dynamic phantom were used to evaluate the impact of test-retest

A dynamic anthropomorphic phantom for end-to-end testing in image- and surface-guided adaptive radiotherapy.

BACKGROUND: Respiratory and digestive motion can compromise the accuracy of radiotherapy (RT), affecting tumor targeting and healthy tissue sparing. Current phantoms often fail to replicate complex organ movements and lack compatibility with advanced imaging modalities like magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and 4D computed tomography (4DCT), limiting their utility in adaptive radiotherapy. The BRaVIDA (Breathing Radiotherapy Visual monitoring, Imaging, and Dosimetric Anthropomorphic) phantom addresses these limitations by simulating realistic organ motion during breathing and digestion. Its MRI

Case Report: The phantom gap: a case of congenital pericardial absence revealed by advanced imaging.

Congenital absence of the pericardium (CAP) is a rare cardiac anomaly with an estimated prevalence of <1:10,000. CAP results from premature atrophy of the left common cardinal vein during embryogenesis, leading to pericardial defects. In this report, the case of a 39-year-old male with recurrent left-sided chest tightness who was initially misdiagnosed with pulmonary embolism (PE) is presented. Anticoagulation failed to resolve symptoms, prompting advanced imaging and multidisciplinary team review, which confirmed CAP. Conservative management was chosen because of mild symptoms and low herniat

Visual hallucinations after resection of cerebral metastases: two patients with complex phantom images.

PURPOSE: Complex visual hallucinations are rarely seen in neurooncology. They are commonly observed alongside psychotic symptoms in schizophrenia or dementia, in Parkinson's or Lewy-body disease, after opioid medications or anesthesia, and, in particular, they appear with visual impairments. METHODS: Here we report two normal-sighted and mentally healthy patients with unusual visual hallucinations after the resection and irradiation of brain metastases, the main features of which were persistent colorful and meaningful images with hallucinatory perseveration. RESULTS: These cases demonstrate

Development of Ultrasound Phantom Made of Transparent Material: Feasibility of Optical Particle Image Velocimetry.

OBJECTIVE: The need for ultrasound flow phantoms to validate ultrasound systems requires the development of materials that can clearly visualize the flow inside for measurement purposes. METHODS: A transparent ultrasound flow phantom material composed of poly(vinyl alcohol) hydrogel (PVA-H) with dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and water solution manufactured using the freezing method and mixed with quartz glass powder to exhibit scattering effects is proposed. To achieve transparency of the hydrogel phantom, the refractive index (RI) was changed to match that of the glass by modifying the PVA conce

Image-based diagnosis of residual or recurrent nasopharyngeal carcinoma may be a phantom tumor phenomenon.

Some nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) patients may present convincing radiological evidence mimicking residual or recurrent tumor after radiotherapy. However, by means of biopsies and long term follow-up, the radiologically diagnosed residuals/recurrences are not always what they appear to be. We report our experience on this "phantom tumor" phenomenon. This may help to avoid the unnecessary and devastating re-irradiation subsequent to the incorrect diagnosis. In this longitudinal cohort study, we collected 19 patients of image-based diagnosis of residual/recurrent NPC during the period from Feb,
