[Fibrovascular esophageal polyp--diagnosis and therapy].

Fibrovascular polyps are extremely rare benign neoplasms of the esophagus. The most prominent clinical symptom is enoral tumor regurgitation, which may lead to asphyxiation by pharyngeal impaction. Usually fibrovascular polyps cause dysphagia and progressive weight loss. Diagnosis by endoscopy and barium swallow may be unexpectedly difficult. The most frequent incorrect diagnoses are achalasia or an intramural or mediastinal tumorous mass compressing the esophagus. CT scan and MR imaging are of little help. Small polyps may be resected endoscopically by means of electrocautery or Nd:YAG laser

The Pharyngolaryngeal Venous Plexus: A Potential Pitfall in Surveillance Imaging of the Neck.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Among patients undergoing serial neck CTs, we have observed variability in the appearance of the pharyngolaryngeal venous plexus, which comprises the postcricoid and posterior pharyngeal venous plexuses. We hypothesize changes in plexus appearance from therapeutic neck irradiation. The purposes of this study are to describe the CT appearance of the pharyngolaryngeal venous plexus among 2 groups undergoing serial neck CTs-patients with radiation therapy-treated laryngeal cancer and patients with medically treated lymphoma-and to assess for changes in plexus appearance at

Primary leiomyosarcoma of the maxilla: An investigative loom-report of a challenging case and review of literature.

Leiomyosarcoma (LMS) is a malignant neoplasm composed of cells showing distinct smooth muscle features. Majority of the tumors are located in the retroperitoneum, including the pelvis and the uterus but are rare in the oral and pharyngeal region. Intraorally, they are present as painless, lobulated, fixed masses of the submucosal tissues in middle-aged or older individuals. Lesions are usually slow growing and are less than 2 cm in diameter at the time of diagnosis. Here we report the clinico-pathological findings of a case of primary LMS of the maxilla in 63-year-old male patient with an emph

[Diagnosis and treatment of parapharyngeal space tumors].

The parapharyngeal space extends from the nasopharynx to the oropharynx. It is bordered medially by the pharyngeal wall and the constrictor pharyngis muscles, and laterally by the mandible. One distinguishes between a pre- and a poststyloid space. Tumors of the parapharyngeal space are rare and represent less than 1 % of all head and neck neoplasms. Benign (70-80 %) as well as malignant (20-30 %) tumors arise from different structures of the parapharyngeal space, mainly from salivary glands and nerve structures. Concerning salivary gland tumors, most are pleomorphic adenomas typically appearin

Mortality of brain tumors among asbestos insulation workers in the United States and Canada.

Death resulting from brain tumors among workers in the petrochemical industry have called attention to the possibility that these neoplasms may be the result of occupational exposure to carcinogens. We have examined the experience of a cohort of 17,800 insulation workers known to be at significant increased risk of cancer at a number of sites (lung, mesothelioma, gastrointestinal, oral cavity, pharyngeal, larynx, renal) to ascertain whether their asbestos exposure also increased their risk of brain tumors. From 1967 to 1979, there were 24 deaths from primary brain tumors in this cohort, somewh

Basicranium malformation with anterior dislocation of right styloid process causing stylalgia.

Differential diagnosis of stylalgia is broad, and many causes should be taken into account, such as temporomandibular joint disorders, carotidynia, compression of nerve fibers by neoplasms, cranial nerve neuralgias, chronic pharyngotonsillitis, pharyngeal or base of tongue tumors and elongation of styloid process, or Eagle syndrome. Basicranium malformation can determine a rare form of stylalgia that is caused by dislocation of styloid process. This can produce a reduction of maxillo-vertebropharyngeal space and irritation of nerve fibers together with stylopharyngeal muscular chronic contract

[Pronunciation and swallowing in patients with tongue deficits following resection of oral cavity tumor].

PURPOSE: Anatomical changes due to resection of oral cavity neoplasm result in respiratory, swallowing, pronunciation and mastication disorders of varying extent and intensity. The aim of this study was to assess the quality of pronunciation and efficiency of deglutition in patients operated due to oral cavity neoplasm. MATERIAL AND METHODS: 112 patients (76 males, 36 females, mean age 53 years) after oral tumor excision were examined. Pronunciation quality was evaluated audio-visually using phonemes of contemporary Polish language (according to Roclawski) which were pronounced alone, in syll

Mapping Australia's hospital care for malignant neoplasms of the lip, oral cavity, and pharynx: An ecological study.

Neoplastic malignant tumors originating from inside the upper aerodigestive tract are referred to as lip, oral cavity, and pharyngeal malignancies. This study aimed to analyze the hospitalization profile for malignant neoplasms of the lip, oral cavity, and pharynx in Australia. This was a longitudinal ecological study that utilized the National Hospitals Data Collection in Australia database between 1998 and 2023. Hospitalization data were identified using the ICD codes C00-C14. Between 1998 and 2023, Australia reported a total of 160,055 hospitalization episodes. A large proportion of these a

Lateral arm microvascular flap in head and neck reconstruction.

OBJECTIVES: To report our results of a study of 28 patients who underwent sequential reconstructions of the head and neck using the lateral arm flap. To discuss the situations where we have found the procedure useful, report the complication rates, and delineate the advantages and disadvantages of using this flap. DESIGN: A clinical series of patients was followed up prospectively. The swallowing function of a subgroup that underwent oropharyngeal reconstruction was compared with that of a simultaneous control group that underwent reconstruction with the pectoralis major flap. SETTING: Unive

Solitary Isolated Oropharyngeal Neurofibroma Presenting With Dysphagia in the Setting of Von Recklinghausen's Disease.

A 24-year-old man with von Recklinghausen's disease presented with complaints of difficulty in swallowing for 6 months and change of voice for 3 months. He also had recent-onset difficulty in breathing. Telelaryngoscopy and subsequent contrast-enhanced computed tomography scan revealed a well-defined, smooth submucosal mass in the oropharynx (attached to the posterior pharyngeal wall, superior to the level of left aryepiglottic fold), obscuring the ipsilateral pyriform fossa, and nearly blocking the pharyngeal lumen. The mass was removed with endoscopic coblation-assisted laryngeal surgery, an

Paraneoplastic cerebellar degeneration associated with lymphoepithelial carcinoma of the tonsil.

BACKGROUND: Paraneoplastic cerebellar degeneration (PCD) is a classical tumor-associated, immune-mediated disease typically associated with gynecological malignancies, small-cell lung-cancer or lymphoma. CASE PRESENTATION: Here we present the case of a 38-year old male with an over 12 months rapidly progressive cerebellar syndrome. Extensive diagnostic workup revealed selective hypermetabolism of the right tonsil in whole-body PET. Histological examination after tonsillectomy demonstrated a lymphoepithelial carcinoma of the tonsil and the tongue base strongly suggesting a paraneoplastic cause

Paraneoplastic pemphigus with a pemphigus vegetans-like plaque as the only cutaneous manifestation.

Paraneoplastic pemphigus (PNP) is a recently recognized autoimmune mucocutaneous disease associated with a few unusual lymphoreticular neoplasms. Intractable stomatitis is the most constant clinical feature but the cutaneous presentations are characteristically variable. We describe a patient with PNP associated with chronic lymphocytic leukemia who presented with severe oral, laryngeal, and pharyngeal involvement. The only cutaneous finding was a pemphigus vegetans-like plaque, a previously undescribed manifestation. The plaque evolved from a flaccid blister that formed at a prior intravenous

A rare case of ectopic laterocervical thymoma.

The ectopic cervical thymoma is a rare site for a thymus neoplasm. It is frequently confused with cyst or with later neck mass of uncertain diagnosis until a histological diagnosis is made. Thymic neoplasms normally arise in the mediastinum, causing signs and symptoms of compression of the adjacent structures. Although rare, malignant thymomas may develop from an ectopic thymus, situated in the thyroid gland (Miyauchi et al., 1985; Matsuura et al., 2004), the neck (Yan et al., 2010; Yao et al., 2010; Jung et al., 1999), the lungs (Myers et al., 2007), and the heart (Miller et al., 2005). It is

Clinical diabetes mellitus in association with diestrus-induced acromegaly in 2 bitches.

Two intact bitches aged 9 and 11 years were referred due to chronic polyuria, polydipsia, vomiting, anorexia and progressive lethargy. On clinical examination, signs of tissue overgrowth (large paws, widened interdental space, pharyngeal stridor) were noticed. Diabetes mellitus (DM) was diagnosed in one dog (case 1) and diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) in the other (case 2). There were increased IGF-1 values suggestive of hypersomatotropism. Progesterone values and pathological findings of the ovaries and uterus indicated diestrus. Diagnosis of diestrus-induced hypersomatotropism was made and ovari

Malignant thymic neoplasms that may mimic benign conditions.

The thymus is a complex, highly specialized organ that is derived from the third and fourth pharyngeal pouches and contains elements that originate from all three germinal layers. As such, it shows certain specific and distinctive reaction patterns to injury that are frequently encountered in a variety of reactive and inflammatory conditions. These reaction patterns, however, can also often be associated with neoplastic diseases arising from this organ, and in some instances, their presence may contribute to obscure the malignant nature of the underlying process. We present a review of the mai

Myopericytoma: a rare case of parapharyngeal localization.

This case study presents a 66-year-old man referred to the Otolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery department due to a one-history of persistent pain in the left posterior cervical region. No abnormalities were detected in the oral and pharyngeal regions during clinical and endoscopic examinations. Subsequently, a magnetic resonance imaging revealed a lesion (14 × 12 × 14 mm) into the left parapharyngeal space, with high signal intensity on T2-weighted images, enhancement after contrast medium, restricted signal on diffusion weighted imaging and high vascularization on perfusion MRI. The hist

Follicular dendritic cell sarcoma of the pharyngeal region.

Follicular dendritic cell sarcoma (FDCS) is a rare neoplasm arising most commonly from follicular dendritic cells in the lymph nodes. It is exceedingly rare in extranodal sites, particularly in the pharyngeal region. The present study reports 3 cases occurring in the pharyngeal region. Case 1 had tonsil and cervical lymph node involvement, while case 3 also had tonsil involvement. Cases 1 and 3 relapsed locally at 3 and 17 months after surgery, respectively. Case 2 was diagnosed with a tumor in the parapharyngeal space and the patient succumbed to the disease 5 months after treatment with comb

Disorders of the pharynx.

Pharyngeal disorders are complex and difficult to treat. Disorders that lead to anatomic derangement, such as trauma and neoplasia, can significantly affect the function of this organ. Pharyngeal dysfunction can manifest as dysphagia, persistent palatal displacement, or exercise intolerance. Secondary complications are serious and life threatening and include aspiration pneumonia, weight loss, and death. Pharyngeal disorders that are only recognizable during strenuous exercise are difficult to diagnose and are treated with limited success, even though they are responsible for significant econo
