Ten Cryptococcus neoformans strains of human origin were studied in order to know their variety by using 2 different culture mediums: creatinine-bromothymol-blue-dextrose and glycine-cycloheximide-phenol red. The results obtained in the two mediums were not totally coincidental. The possible causes and the specificity of these mediums for identifying C. neoformans varieties are discussed.

Morphine administration (20 mg/kg s.c.) slowed renal elimination of phenol red in mice, raising plasma levels of this dye and reducing its levels in urine. After 9 days of twice daily morphine injections up to 100 mg/kg, an acute 20 mg/kg morphine challenge did not produce analgesia or hypothermia as in naive mice. We developed a buffered azide-free urea medium which is sensitive, specific, and nontoxic for rapid detection of Campylobacter pylori in gastric biopsies. A simple method for screening drugs that influence tracheobronchial secretion has been described. After i.p. application of a phenol red solution, part of the dye is secreted into the tracheal lumen. This basal secretion is increased by both parasympathomimetics and sympathomimetics. In addition, expectorants are also capable of increasing tracheal phenol red output. Therefore this method is suitable for the study of drugs that may be capable of influencing tracheobronchial secretion.

In skeletal muscle, the waveform of Ca(2+) release under clamp depolarization exhibits an early peak. Gastric acid secretion was measured in unanaesthetized codfish surgically equipped with a catheter draining the stomach. The pylorus was ligated.
