[The exploring of academic idea of Guang wen yi lun (Augmented warm epidemics)].

Dai's Guang wen yi lun (Augmented Warm Epidemics) is another treatise of epidemic disease after Wu's Wen yi lun (On Warm Epidemcs). This treatise embodies Dai's academic idea of discerning and curing cold-warm disease, including the following aspects, viz. the cold plague, the same way but with different results, creation of five discerning ways, detailed analysis at each sentence, checkup differentiation of syndromes, taking the exterior and interior as outline, application of the five ways and using regular way to treat variation.

[Not Available].

Kant's discussion of the ethical implications of smallpox inoculation is presented here. In four fragments Kant analyzes the moral legitimacy of endangering other people in medical practice and especially endangering people who are incapable of giving consent. In addition, we re-evaluate the alleged "success story" of the development of smallpox prevention and review the technical and theoretical difficulties of smallpox inoculation at the time of Kant.

The practical science of medicine.

Contemporary medicine, it is argued here, employs reductive explanations, but at the same time resists wholesale reduction to "deeper" biochemical and physical fields or theories. In its own reductive explanations, to be sure, medicine borrows causal concepts from other fields and so necessarily shares certain explanatory goals with those deeper fields. However, because medicine has additional, distinctive goals as well as a special subject matter and problems (it is a practical science), the field of medicine is ultimately irreducible.

Measuring treatment philosophy: a scale for substance abuse recovery programs.

The assessment of the philosophy that guides substance abuse treatment programs has been a difficult subject to approach by those working in treatment research. Differing treatment philosophies are generally represented by multi-dimensional theoretical constructs that do not easily lend themselves to assessment by quantitative means. In the U.S., substance abuse treatment programs have been suggested as fitting into a disease (or medical) model, a social learning (or psychological) model, or a social community model in designing a treatment regime for clients. This paper presents a Social Mode

An "ethics of strangers"? On knowing the patient in clinical ethics.

The shape and function of ethical imperatives may vary if the context is an interaction between strangers, or those who are well acquainted. This idea, taken up from Stephen Toulmin's distinction between an "ethics of strangers" and an "ethics of intimacy", can be applied to encounters in healthcare. There are situations where healthcare personnel (HCP) know their patients (corresponding to an "ethics of intimacy") and situations where HCP do not know their patients (corresponding to "an ethics of strangers"). Does it make a difference for normative imperatives that follow from central concept

The healing philosopher: John Locke's medical ethics.

This article examines a heretofore unexplored facet of John Locke's philosophy. Locke was a medical doctor and he also wrote about medical issues that are controversial today. Despite this, Locke's medical ethics has yet to be studied. An analysis of Locke's education and his teachers and colleagues in the medical profession, of the 17th century Hippocratic Oath, and of the reaction to the last recorded outbreak of the bubonic plague in London, shines some light on the subject of Locke's medical ethics. The study of Locke's medical ethics confirms that he was a deontologist who opposed all sui

How to respond to resistiveness towards assistive technologies among persons with dementia.

It is a common experience among care professionals that persons with dementia often say 'no' to conventional caring measures such as taking medication, eating or having a shower. This tendency to say 'no' may also concern the use of assistive technologies such as fall detectors, mobile safety alarms, Internet for social contact and robots. This paper provides practical recommendations for care professionals in home health care and social care about how to respond to such resistiveness towards assistive technologies. Apart from the option of accepting the 'no', it discusses a number of methods

Fragments of illness: The Death of a Beekeeper as a literary case study of cancer.

The first decisive steps of medicine towards becoming a science in its present shape happen to coincide with "the rise of the novel" in the eighteenth century. Before this well known and in our days still growing scientific specialization of medicine, the connections between literature and medicine were both many and close. By reading and analyzing a contemporary novel, The Death of a Beekeeper by the Swedish author Lars Gustafsson (1978), this article is an attempt to explore to which extent a fictional narrative about a unique case of cancer may illuminate challenges associated with the expe

Harvey, by Hercules! The hero of the blood's circulation.

This article continues the analyses in Medical History 52 (2008), 73-90, 365-86 of William Harvey's self-understanding as the philosopher and discoverer of the blood's circulation. Harvey brilliantly and subversively assumed the persona of the mythological Hercules to embody his own anatomical labour in De motu cordis et sanguinis (1628). He reprised the role in self-defence against accusations in the College of Physicians, London, of his breach of faith with medical tradition. Harvey sought to usurp the medical epithet 'a second Hercules' by reforming humanist dependence on ancient texts as a

Modern liberalism, female circumcision, and the rationality of traditions.

Tolerance is at the heart of Western liberalism, permitting mutually exclusive ideas and practices to coexist peacefully with one another, without the proponents of the differing ideas and practices killing one another. Yet, nothing challenges tolerance like the practice of sunna, female circumcision, clitorectomy, or genital mutilation. In this essay, I critique the Western critics of the practices, not in order to defend these practices, but rather to show that Western liberalism itself does not offer transcultural and transtemporal principles, for these principles only cohere within the tra

Conjoined Twins: Philosophical Problems and Ethical Challenges.

We examine the philosophical and ethical issues associated with conjoined twins and their surgical separation. In cases in which there is an extensive sharing of organs, but nevertheless two distinguishable functioning brains, there are a number of philosophical and ethical challenges. This is because such conjoined twins: 1. give rise to puzzles concerning our identity, about whether we are identical to something psychological or biological; 2. force us to decide whether what matters from an ethical point of view is the biological life of our organisms or the existence of our consciousness or

The limits of social justice as an aspect of medical professionalism.

Contemporary accounts of medical ethics and professionalism emphasize the importance of social justice as an ideal for physicians. This ideal is often specified as a commitment to attaining the universal availability of some level of health care, if not of other elements of a "decent minimum" standard of living. I observe that physicians, in general, have not accepted the importance of social justice for professional ethics, and I further argue that social justice does not belong among professional norms. Social justice is a norm of civic rather than professional life; professional groups may

Forensic DNA databases: genetic testing as a societal choice.

In this brief report, the authors argue that while a lot of concerns about forensic DNA databases have been raised using arguments from biomedical ethics, these databases are used in a complete different context from other biomedical tools. Because they are used in the struggle against crime, the decision to create or store a genetic profile cannot be left to the individual. Instead, this decision is made by officials of a society. These decisions have to be based on a policy that is the concretisation of some of society's most fundamental ideas about its own nature and function. Individuals w

Amplifications and applications of Pennebaker's analogic to digital model in health promotion, prevention, and psychotherapy.

This article expands on James Pennebaker's original model in expressive writing, going from an Analogically unclear and unspecified experiential mass (A) to a Digital specification in words (D). Amplifications of this model are found in philosophy, psychodynamic theory and in Salience learning theory. Applications of this model involve expressive writing, going from ambiguous experiences (A) to using the Dictionary (D), and responding to Sentences with strong psychological impact (S). The undefined and ill-defined analogical mass is constituted by traumas in Pennebaker's work and hurt feelings

Classification Without Reduction: The Epistemology of Clinical Taxonomy Examined Through TCM Constitution Theory.

RATIONALE, AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: Clinical classifications operate at different explanatory levels-from molecular subtypes to phenotypic syndromes-yet the epistemological standing of a classification is often treated as though it depends on which level it occupies. This conflation of explanatory level with epistemological standing is unfounded. This essay identifies the minimal epistemological conditions that any clinical classification must satisfy and examines whether these conditions depend on explanatory level. METHODS: Philosophical analysis drawing on natural kinds theory (Boyd's homoeost

Baby Parts.

In her recent work, Elselijn Kingma applies four criteria for the individuation of an organism to determine whether the fetus is a part of or mereologically distinct from the mother. These criteria are: homeostasis, metabolic and functional integration, topological continuity, and immunological tolerance. She concludes on the basis of these four criteria that the evidence supports a thesis to the effect that the fetus is a part of the mother and that the point of topological continuity is at the placenta, a "shared organ." In this paper, I use Kingma's four criteria offered to argue that the f
