Severe Fever with Thrombocytopenia Syndrome Complicated by Co-infection with Spotted Fever Group Rickettsiae, China.

During 2013-2015 in central China, co-infection with spotted fever group rickettsiae was identified in 77 of 823 patients infected with severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome virus. Co-infection resulted in delayed recovery and increased risk for death, prompting clinical practices in the region to consider co-infection in patients with severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome.

Symptomatic infections by toscana virus in the Modena province in the triennium 1999-2001.

We report nine cases of clinical manifestations by Toscana virus (TOSV) diagnosed at the Centre for the Diagnosis of Viral Diseases of the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, in the inhabitants of Modena province (Emilia Romagna region), in the triennium 1999-2001. TOSV was involved in six cases of meningitis, two of meningoencephalitis and one case of febrile erythema without meningeal manifestations. Six TOSV-infected patients had stayed for a few days in a different area of the Tuscany region before the onset of clinical manifestations so, only three cases of infections by TOSV had an a

[Data on a study of a natural focus of sandfly fever in Sevastopol during 1945-1988].

Sandfly [correction of Mosquito-borne] fever in Sevastopol was of a marked season character (June-September), with maximum cases registered in August. The morbidity curve corresponded to the sandfly [correction of mosquito] number curve, lagging behind it because of the incubation period. Since 1947 DDT and hexachlorane, having a lasting effect (40-50 days), have been widely used for sandfly [correction of mosquito] control. This was accompanied by intensive improvement of the living conditions in the city, regular sanitation and deratization. As a result of the above measures sandfly [correct

Novel and emergent sandfly-borne phleboviruses in Asia Minor: a systematic review.

Sandfly-transmitted phleboviruses are globally spread agents causing febrile diseases and central nervous system infections. The activity of pathogenic phleboviruses, as well as several novel strains, has been reported from Turkey, a transboundary country connecting Asia, Europe, and Africa with suitable habitats for sandflies. This study overviews all published data on phleboviruses from Turkey and evaluates the impact from the virological, epidemiological, and public health perspectives. A systematic review of Web-based global and local resources was performed. Comparison and phylogenetic an

New record of the suspected leishmaniasis vector Phlebotomus (Transphlebotomus) mascittii Grassi, 1908 (Diptera: Psychodidae: Phlebotominae)--the northernmost phlebotomine sandfly occurrence in the Palearctic region.

Although being typical Mediterranean faunal elements, phlebotomine sandflies have also been recorded in central Europe for several countries including Germany, where two species, Phlebotomus mascittii and Phlebotomus perniciosus, occur. In Europe, P. mascittii is the northernmostly distributed phlebotomine species. While P. perniciosus is a proven vector of leishmaniasis as well as various sandfly fever causing phleboviruses, the situation for P. mascittii is different. For this species, vector competence could not be proven yet, but is strongly suspected. During an entomological survey in Jul

Sandfly fever in Afghanistan-a sometimes overlooked disease of military importance: a case series and review of the literature.

Sandfly fever, sometimes known as pappataci fever or Phlebotomus fever, is a vector transmitted viral illness with a history of affecting naïve military formations that travel through or fight in areas in which the infection is endemic. We present a series of 4 hospitalized cases of sandfly fever (2 presumptive, 2 laboratory confirmed) that were admitted to a Role 3 hospital in Afghanistan for evaluation and treatment following medical evacuation from a forward area for marked fevers and malaise. Laboratory evaluation of these cases was significant for leukopenia and thrombocytopenia, consiste

Faunistic study of sandflies in Greece.

A faunistic study of phlebotomine sandflies was carried out on the mainland and on four islands in Greece between 1999 and 2004. Sandflies were collected in 18 areas, and the population structure was observed and recorded. A total of 10 species were identified; their distribution is presented here. Of these, the species Phlebotomus neglectus Tonnoir and P. perfiliewi Parrot (Diptera: Psychodidae), epidemiologically the most important vectors of leishmaniases and sandfly fever in Greece, were shown to be present in the main endemic foci of the country.

Visceral leishmaniasis with Roth spots.

Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is caused by the protozoan parasite Leishmania donovani and transmitted by the bite of infected sandfly Phlebotomus argentipes. The protozoa is obliged intracellularly and causes a wide spectrum of clinical syndromes: VL ('kala azar'), cutaneous leishmaniasis and mucocutaneous leishmaniasis (espundia). Kala azar is the most aggressive form and if untreated causes high mortality. Here, we describe a case of VL that presented to us with high-grade fever and found to have Roth spots that were resolved after 15 days of therapy.

In silico assessment of 4 methoxypelargonidin and luteolinidin from Parthenium hysterophorous as acetylcholinesterase inhibitors of Phlebotomus Papatasi.

Phlebotomus papatasi is a vector of various health risk diseases, such as sandfly fever and leishmaniasis. Chemical-based insecticides appear to be effective against the vector but are harmful to non-targeted organisms and the environment. Plant metabolites are an excellent source of natural insecticides that show no adverse effects. To the environment, plant-based flavonoids are emerging compounds that can be used against human disease vectors. In the present investigation, flavonoids were partially isolated from the leaf and flower of Parthenium hysterophorus and characterized using column c

Toscana virus in Spain.

Toscana virus (TOSV, Phlebovirus, family Bunyaviridae) infection is one of the most prevalent arboviruses in Spain. Within the objectives of a multidisciplinary network, a study on the epidemiology of TOSV was conducted in Granada, in southern Spain. The overall seroprevalence rate was 24.9%, significantly increasing with age. TOSV was detected in 3 of 103 sandfly pools by viral culture or reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction from a region of the L gene. Nucleotide sequence homology was 99%-100% in TOSV from vectors and patients and 80%-81% compared to the Italian strain ISS Phl.3.

Toscana virus encephalitis with reversible self-limiting vasculopathy.

Toscana virus (named after Tuscany, Italy) is an arthropod borne virus transmitted by sandflies. It is common in the Mediterranean region, several southern European countries and some North African countries, but is rare in the UK. Most Toscana virus infections are asymptomatic, but severe infections can have neurological manifestations. Toscana virus encephalitis is an uncommon self-limiting encephalitis with a vasculopathy. We report an elderly man who developed Toscana virus encephalitis and vasculopathy causing multiple ischaemic strokes with evidence of reversible intravascular stenosis,

Phlebotomine sand flies in Southwest Germany: an update with records in new locations.

BACKGROUND: Vector-borne diseases (VBD) are of growing global importance. Sand flies are potential vectors for phleboviruses (family Phenuiviridae) including Toscana virus (TOSV), Sicilian virus, Sandfly fever, Naples virus, and Leishmania parasites in Europe. To date, only two phlebotomine species have been recorded for Germany: Phlebotomus perniciosus and Phlebotomus mascittii. This study updates the distribution and abundance of the two occurring species. METHODS: An entomological field study was carried out during 2015-2018 to assess the abundance of sand flies in Southwest Germany within

Undifferentiated febrile illnesses amongst British troops in Helmand, Afghanistan.

OBJECTIVES: Undifferentiated febrile illnesses have been a threat to British expeditionary forces ever since the Crusades. The infections responsible were identified during the Colonial Era, both World Wars and smaller conflicts since, but nearly all remain a significant threat today. Undiagnosed febrile illnesses have occurred amongst British troops in Helmand, Afghanistan since 2006 and so a fever study was performed to identify them. METHODS: From May to October 2008, all undifferentiated fever cases seen at the British field hospital in Helmand, Afghanistan were assessed using a standard

[Meningitis caused by Toscana virus during a summer stay in Italy].

A 44-year-old woman suffered fever, headache and meningism during a summer stay in a region of central Italy where sand-fly fever is endemic. A few days after returning to the Netherlands, she appeared mentally and physically slow but had no fever. Because of the possibility of viral meningitis an examination of the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) was carried out. This revealed a cell count of 1074/3 cells. Toscana virus antibodies of the IgG and IgM subclass were detected in two respective serum samples and in the CSF. This led to the diagnosis 'Toscana virus meningo-encephalitis'. Toscana virus is

A Mediterranean arbovirus: the Toscana virus.

Toscana virus (Bunyaviridae family, Phlebovirus genus) is a sandfly fever virus responsible for human neurological infections. Sandfly viruses are transmitted by insect vectors (Phlebotomus species) and the infection is present in climatic areas that allow the life cycle of the vector. The arthropode-borne Toscana virus is the etiologic agent of meningitis, meningoencephalitis, and encephalitis. The frequency of this neuropathic infection increases in the summer months, peaking in August in the endemic Mediterranean areas (Italy, Portugal, Spain, and Cyprus). Infection diagnosis is carried out
