Middle ear disease and hearing loss of moderate degree is a factor which alone or in combination with others, have been suggested to create phonetic/phonemic disability. The aim of the present investigation was to throw light upon this question. Twentytwo children with phonetic/phonemic disability, 19 boys and 3 girls, age 4.5-6.5 years, were examined. Twentytwo normal speaking children served as a control group. Oto-rhinolaryngological examination, tympanometry and hearing threshold measurements were performed. Abnormal middle ear pressure (less than -50 mm H2O) in one or both ears, and stati

BACKGROUND: Speech intelligibility is a core outcome in the assessment and treatment of individuals with developmental motor speech disorders. While open-set intelligibility testing is widely used, a closed-set phonetic intelligibility assessment, which evaluates listener perception of systematically varied speech contrasts, offers a focused approach to identifying segmental errors that impact intelligibility. However, such tools are unavailable in Hebrew.
AIMS: This study introduces a novel, preliminary closed-set phonetic intelligibility tool designed for Hebrew speakers with development mo

Speech is a complex behavior that can be used to study unique contributions of the basal ganglia to motor control in the human brain. Computational models suggest that the basal ganglia encode either the phonetic content or the sequence of speech elements. To explore this question, we investigated the relationship between phoneme and sequence features of a spoken syllable triplet and the firing rate of subthalamic nucleus (STN) neurons recorded during the implantation of deep brain stimulation (DBS) electrodes in individuals with Parkinson's disease. Patients repeated aloud a random sequence o

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic inflammatory disease of the central nervous system which, in addition to affecting motor and cognitive functions, may also lead to specific changes in the speech of patients. Speech production, comprehension, repetition and naming tasks, as well as structural and content changes in narratives, might indicate a limitation of executive functions. In this study we present a speech-based machine learning technique to distinguish speakers with relapsing-remitting subtype MS and healthy controls (HC). We exploit the fact that MS might cause a motor speech disorde

Previous investigations have demonstrated that naturalistic listening in real time (NLRT) can be used reliability to assess prelinguistic vocalizations and is less time-consuming than phonetic transcription. The current investigation was performed to examine the correspondence of syllable and consonant information obtained using a modified naturalistic listening in real time (NLRT) methodology compared to broad phonetic transcription for 20 toddlers with repaired cleft palate. A forty-minute vocalization sample was obtained for each toddler. Two listeners listened to each recording independent

There are many stroke patients with decreased phonation ability. Vitamin D is associated with weakness in muscle power and a decreased function of activity and is often accompanied by a deficiency of serum vitamin D in stroke patients. This study was conducted to evaluate the correlation between serum vitamin D level and phonetic function in subacute stroke patients. Among subacute stroke patients, patients with dysphonia were retrospectively recruited. Phonation function was assessed by acoustic analysis using the dysphonia severity index (DSI) and maximum phonation time for 4 corner vowels/a

Training deep neural networks on well-understood dependencies in speech data can provide new insights into how they learn internal representations. This paper argues that acquisition of speech can be modeled as a dependency between random space and generated speech data in the Generative Adversarial Network architecture and proposes a methodology to uncover the network's internal representations that correspond to phonetic and phonological properties. The Generative Adversarial architecture is uniquely appropriate for modeling phonetic and phonological learning because the network is trained o

BACKGROUND: Past reports on the speech production of individuals with Williams syndrome (WS) suggest that their prosody is anomalous and may lead to challenges in spoken communication. While existing prosodic assessments confirm that individuals with WS fail to use prosodic emphasis to express contrast, those reports typically lack detailed phonetic analysis of speech data. The present study examines the acoustic properties of speech prosody, aiming for the future development of targeted speech interventions.
AIMS: The study examines the three primary acoustic correlates of prosodic emphasis

There is a growing consensus that developmental dyslexia is associated with a phonological-core deficit. One symptom of this phonological deficit is a subtle speech-perception deficit. The auditory basis of this deficit is still hotly debated. If people with dyslexia, however, do not have an auditory deficit and perceive the underlying acoustic dimensions of speech as well as people who read normally, then why do they exhibit a categorical-perception deficit? A potential answer to this conundrum lies in the possibility that people with dyslexia do not adequately handle the context-dependent va

Event-related magnetic fields were recorded using magnetoencephalography in children with (n=12) and without (n=11) dyslexia while they discriminated between pairs of syllables from a voice onset time series (/ga/-/ka/). Nonimpaired readers exhibited left-hemisphere predominance of activity after the resolution of the N1m, whereas children with dyslexia experienced a sharp peak of relative activation in right temporoparietal areas between 300 and 700 ms post-stimulus onset. Increased relative activation in right temporoparietal areas was correlated with reduced performance on phonological proc

A patient with chronic agrammatic Broca's aphasia presented with symptoms of deep dyslexia, in which it is presumed that phonologic processing of the written message is disrupted. Functional reorganization of the "nonlexical" or phonetic route of reading was undertaken according to principles of A. R. Luria, whereby the patient must learn consciously to control behaviors that had formerly been unconscious and automatic. This patient's responses in treatment made it clear that the phonetic route encompasses at least two dissociable functions, grapheme-phoneme conversion and sequential analysis.

College students diagnosed as learning disabled were studied to determine whether they would make more progress in a summer program if taught by an adaptation of the Orton-Gillingham (O-G) approach. Progress of those exposed to this approach was compared to progress of those exposed to (a) a nonphonetic approach or (b) no educational activity. Pre- and posttest results are reported for the Wide Range Achievement Test-Revised and Woodcock Reading Mastery Tests. The subjects were 30 college students aged 17 to 24, who were diagnosed as LD. They were divided into groups of 10 and exposed to the i

PURPOSE: Phonological awareness (PA) is a foundational skill for literacy development and may be impacted in children with cleft palate with or without cleft lip (CP ± L), as studies have reported associations between atypical speech sound production in this population and reduced PA skills. This study examined (a) the relationship between pre-intervention PA and the presence of nonoral compensatory speech errors in children with CP ± L and (b) the effects of phonetic-based versus combined phonetic-phonological speech and language intervention on PA across syllabic, intrasyllabic, and phonemic

Problem: Phonetic transcription is crucial in diagnosing speech sound disorders (SSDs) but is susceptible to transcriber experience and perceptual bias. Current forced alignment (FA) tools, which annotate audio files to determine spoken content and its placement, often require manual transcription, limiting their effectiveness. Method: We introduce a novel, text-independent forced alignment model that autonomously recognises individual phonemes and their boundaries, addressing these limitations. Our approach leverages an advanced, pre-trained wav2vec 2.0 model to segment speech into tokens and

Syntactic, lexical, and phonological/phonetic knowledge are vital aspects of macro level language ability. Prior research has predominantly focused on environmental or cortical sources of individual differences in these areas; however, a growing literature suggests an auditory brainstem contribution to language performance in both typically developing (TD) populations and children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). This study investigates whether one aspect of auditory brainstem responses (ABRs), neural response stability, which is a metric reflecting trial-by-trial consistency in the neural

Use of precise consonantal information while learning new words has been established for onset consonants in previous studies, which showed that infants as young as 16 to 20 months of age can simultaneously learn two new words that differ only by a syllable-initial consonant (Havy & Nazzi, 2009; Nazzi, 2005; Nazzi & New, 2007; Werker, Fennell, Corcoran, & Stager, 2002). However, there is no systematic evidence to show whether specific phonetic information in other positions within the syllable can be used while learning new words. To the contrary, Nazzi (2005) found that when tested using the
