Do video games evoke specific types of epileptic seizures?

We determined whether epileptic clinical manifestations evoked by playing video games (VG) differ from those evoked by intermittent photic stimulation (IPS) or striped patterns (P). We exposed nine children who had TV- and VG-evoked seizures in daily life to 12 VG after standardized photic stimulation and pattern stimulation. Their EEGs were recorded continuously, analyzed, and then correlated with a video of their behavior. Similar types of clinical signs were seen during VG, P, and IPS, but the signs we observed were more subtle during the VG. Eight patients showed a clear lateralization. A

EEG and clinical findings in pediatric epilepsy and control groups using video-based pattern stimulation.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to compare EEG responses and clinical findings during video-based pattern stimulation in pediatric epilepsy and control groups, and to evaluate differences according to epilepsy subgroups and seizure control status. METHODS: A total of 438 children (190 with epilepsy, 248 controls) were included. All participants underwent a 100-second video protocol consisting of 10 different patterns. Epileptiform activity during pattern stimulation and simultaneous clinical symptoms (nausea, dizziness, lightheadedness, etc.) were recorded. Responses to hyperventilation and photi

Electrophysiological substrates of impulsiveness: potential effects on aggressive behavior.

Previous investigations attempting to examine impulsiveness as a personality construct are likely confounded with a high incidence of aggressive and antisocial behavior. The present study assessed electroencephalographic activity at rest and during photic stimulation in two groups: (1) an impulsive group (n=10) scoring high on the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale (BIS-11) and reporting no indication of impulsive aggressive behavior; and (2) a non-aggressive control group (n=14) scoring within the normal range on the BIS-11. All subjects completed a brief battery of personality measures related to i

The effect of propranolol on cerebrovascular reactivity to visual stimulation in migraine.

BACKGROUND: Propranolol is effective for migraine prophylaxis. However, its exact mechanism is not known. We postulated that the protective effect is due to the lowering of cerebrovascular reactivity (CVR). To verify this, we applied photic stimuli to migraineurs and analyzed the results. METHODS: We checked the mean flow velocity (MFV) of the posterior cerebral artery by transcranial Doppler in 22 migraineurs during a headache-free period and in 14 normal controls. During the photic stimulation, MFV was remeasured and the CVR was estimated in both groups. Migraineurs received prophylactic pr

The relationship between photosensitive temporal lobe epilepsy and eye closure activity.

We describe a 16-year-old female patient affected by photo-induced temporal lobe epilepsy. During intermittent photic stimulation she showed a photoparoxysmal response in the EEG. This case was diagnosed from clinical symptoms, single photon emission computer tomography, and EEG data. The clinical symptoms were relieved by the administration of carbamazepine. As these photoparoxysmal responses were observed not only during photic stimulation, but also when patient was closing her eyes during an eye-opening test in complete darkness, we propose the existence of an alternative pathway such as fr

Effects of opiate-like peptides, morphine, and naloxone in the photosensitive baboon, Papio papio.

The effects of intracerebroventricular (i.c.v.) or systemic injections of Met- or Leu-enkephalin, beta-endorphin, FK 33.824 (D-Ala2, MePhe4, Met(O5)-ol-enkephalin) and of morphine and naloxone have been studied in baboons, Papio papio, which spontaneously show photically induced epileptic responses. Animals were chronically implanted with epidural or deep recording electrodes and a cannula in one lateral ventricle, and tested whilst seated in a primate chair. In some animals the natural syndrome was enhanced by the prior administration of DL-allylglycine, 100--200 mg/kg, i.v. Met- or Leu-enkep

Lateralized periodic discharges and photic sensitivity in adult onset MELAS syndrome in twin sisters.

Mitochondrial encephalopathy, lactic acidosis, and stroke-like episodes (MELAS) syndrome is one of the most common mitochondrial disorders, typically presenting with symptoms before the age of 40. Epileptic seizures are a common manifestation, with both focal and generalized seizures being observed. EEG findings can be variable, with the most common patterns being slow background activity followed by epileptiform discharges. Here, we present monozygotic twin sisters with late-onset MELAS and specific EEG features, including lateralized periodic discharges and sensitivity to photic stimulation,

Migraine with aura and photosensitive epileptic seizures: a case report.

An 18-year-old female presented with two seizures induced by photic stimulation. She had a positive family history for migraine and a history of febrile convulsions. Since the age of 13 she had suffered from migraine attacks with aura. A brain computerized tomography with contrast enhancement was negative and several electroencephalograms showed a photoparoxysmal response. At the age of 18 she had a partial secondary generalized seizure after photic stimulation during routine electroencephalogram. The onset of seizure was in the occipital region. Two days later, the patient presented with a ty

Acute effect of transcranial direct current stimulation on photoparoxysmal response.

INTRODUCTION: Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a non-invasive technique, used to modify the excitability of the central nervous system. The main mechanism of tDCS is to change the excitability by subthreshold modulation by affecting neuronal membrane potentials in the direction of depolarization or repolarization. tDCS was previously investigated as an alternative adjunctive therapy in patients with epilepsy. We aimed here to investigate the acute effect of tDCS on the photoparoxysmal response (PPR) in EEG. METHODS: We enrolled 11 consecutive patients diagnosed with idiopathi

Television-induced electronegative photoparoxysmal response: an extratemporal seizure mimic?

Video-EEG monitoring is an established gold-standard procedure for diagnosis and differentiation of epileptic and non-epileptic seizures. Epilepsy misdiagnosis, to which factors such as EEG artifact misinterpretation contribute to, is common, and can have long-lasting iatrogenic repercussions to the clinical management of affected patients. Among the many types of responses to photic stimulation, artifacts and physiologic and epileptic responses are possible. All of these can interfere with EEG interpretation when provoked by a source of illumination. Photic-induced responses are of increasing

The pathophysiology and pharmacology of photic cortical reflex myoclonus.

We studied 6 patients with myoclonus elicited by flash stimulation (1-15 Hz). Multichannel electromyographic recording showed a rostrocaudal recruitment order for the generalized myoclonic jerk. In all patients, each flash induced a large (36.9 +/- 5.7 microV) frontal biphasic wave with an onset latency of 42 msec that preceded the earliest muscle response in the face by at least 4 msec (range, 4-7 msec), the activity in the biceps by 11 to 14 msec, and the activity in tibialis anterior by 26 to 34 msec. Occipital potentials evoked by the same flash stimulation had a latency of 33.7 msec and w

EEG abnormalities in 5,893 jet pilot applicants registered in a 20-year period.

On account of EEG findings in jet pilot applicants examined during 1951-1952, the Royal Danish Air Force (RDAF) accepted EEGs as part of the routine procedures for evaluation of the applicants' fitness. The outlook for a successful completion of the training program was poor for those with a paroxysmal abnormal EEG. As a consequence, candidates were excluded from training on the basis of paroxysmal EEG changes regardless of their clinical findings. During 1956-1975 an EEG was obtained from 5,893 applicants for jet pilot training in the RDAF. Of these, 142 (2.4%) were excluded because of an abn

Ambient Music Decreases EEG Burst-Suppression Ratio During General Anesthesia in Rats.

During deep anesthesia, the EEG becomes discontinuous. Burst-suppression is often an intended target during deep sedation or medically induced coma. Within this state, anesthetic depth is commonly monitored by the suppression ratio (SR), which expresses the fraction of time spent in suppression. However, accumulating evidence suggests that SR remains reactive to external stimulation. We tested whether ambient music commonly played in operating theaters alters the SR in male Wistar rats under sevoflurane, chloral hydrate, or isoflurane anesthesia. To this end, the first 60 s of the Stayin' Aliv

Prolonged Antibiotic Exposure During Gestation Increases the Severity of Perinatal Asphyxia as Measured by EEG Reactivity in Rodents.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Birth asphyxia is a frequent neonatal complication in humans. Its outcome is variable, and the factors underlying this variability remain incompletely understood. Maternal gut microbiome impairment has been proposed as one factor that may influence offspring neurodevelopment, especially when the immature brain is exposed to additional vulnerability such as perinatal asphyxia (PA). Building on our previous maternal microbiome disruption model and on our prior observation that electroencephalography (EEG) reactivity to photic stimulation under deep anesthesia detects funct

Visually evoked startle response in a patient with epilepsy: a case report and review of the literature.

Both symptomatic and genetic, cases with hyperekplexia or startle seizures induced by acoustic stimuli, are previously reported. By contrast, startle response induced by visual stimuli is rare. While visual stimuli are more commonly associated with startle seizures, here we present an 11-year-old girl with epilepsy, motor-mental retardation, and spastic tetraparesis, who had repetitive startle responses by photic stimulation during the electroencephalogram recording, without any spike-and-wave discharges associated with the startles. We report this unique case with startle responses induced bo

Reduced interhemispheric connectivity in childhood autism detected by electroencephalographic photic driving coherence.

The EEG coherence among 14 scalp points during intermittent photic stimulation at 11 fixed frequencies of 3-24 Hz was studied in 14 boys with autism, aged 6-14 years, with relatively intact verbal and intellectual functions, and 19 normally developing boys. The number of interhemispheric coherent connections pertaining to the 20 highest connections of each individual was significantly lower in autistic patients than in the control group at all the EEG beta frequencies corresponding to those of stimulation. The coefficient of coherence values between homologous occipital, parietal and central a

Reduction in BOLD fMRI response to primary visual stimulation following alcohol ingestion.

The physiology of alcohol's effects on brain function is poorly understood. Emission tomographic imaging has revealed both acute and chronic alterations in resting cerebral hemodynamics and metabolism following alcohol ingestion. However, cerebral functional integrity under these conditions has received less attention. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) offers a non-invasive method for assessing brain functional activation. In order to assess its utility for studying the effect of alcohol on brain function, we performed fMRI with photic stimulation before and after administration of

Seizures triggered by blinking in a non-photosensitive epileptic.

An epileptic girl with Lennox-Gastaut syndrome had seizures triggered specifically by blinking, but not by other eye movements or by photic stimulation. Electrographic and clinical seizures were most reliably precipitated by repetitive blinking produced voluntarily on command, by reflex blinking on corneal stimulation, or by psychogenic triggers of blinking such as social stress or cognitive effort.
