Variability and Time of Day Dependence of Ozone Photochemistry in Western Wildfire Plumes.

Understanding the efficiency and variability of photochemical ozone (O3) production from western wildfire plumes is important to accurately estimate their influence on North American air quality. A set of photochemical measurements were made from the NOAA Twin Otter research aircraft as a part of the Fire Influence on Regional to Global Environments and Air Quality (FIREX-AQ) experiment. We use a zero-dimensional (0-D) box model to investigate the chemistry driving O3 production in modeled plumes. Modeled afternoon plumes reached a maximum O3 mixing ratio of 140 ± 50 ppbv (average ± standard d

Photochemistry of ozone pollution in autumn in Pearl River Estuary, South China.

To explore the photochemical O3 pollution over the Pearl River Estuary (PRE), intensive measurements of O3 and its precursors, including trace gases and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), were simultaneously conducted at a suburban site on the east bank of PRE (Tung Chung, TC) in Hong Kong and a rural site on the west bank (Qi'ao, QA) in Zhuhai, Guangdong in autumn 2016. Throughout the sampling period, 3 days with high O3 levels (maximum hourly O3 > 100 ppbv) were captured at both sites (pattern 1) and 13 days with O3 episodes occurred only at QA (pattern 2). It was found that O3 formation at

New concepts in therapeutic photomedicine: photochemistry, optical targeting and the therapeutic window.

Advances in optics technology, synthetic photochemistry, and the science of photobiology make it possible to think beyond phototherapy and photochemotherapy which is dependent on direct photochemical alteration of metabolites or direct phototoxic insult to cells. This report discusses another gender of photomedicine therapy which includes in vivo photoactivation of medicines, photon-dependent drug delivery, and manipulation of host and exposure source to maximize therapeutic index. These therapeutic manipulations are made possible because the skin is highly overperfused and because non-ionizin

Hierarchically Molecular Programming of Antiparallel H‑Aggregates for NIR Type I Photochemistry.

Developing near-infrared (NIR) photosensitizers with effective type I reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation remains challenging. H‑aggregates promote triplet formation and charge transfer, but often suffer from substantial absorption blueshifts and excessive thermal deactivation that compromise photosensitization efficacy. Herein, a hierarchically molecular programming strategy is proposed to construct minimal-blueshift H-aggregates as robust NIR type I photosensitizers. Primary engineering via π-bridge extension and acceptor strengthening within a twisted-planar donor-π-acceptor scaffold e

Rapid Wintertime Formation of Phenolic Secondary Organic Aerosol from Brown Carbon Photochemistry.

Biomass burning (BB) is a major organic aerosol source during urban winter pollution events. BB particles are rich in brown carbon (BrC) and absorb light to produce photooxidants such as oxidizing triplet excited states of organic chromophores (3C*). In midlatitudes, semivolatile phenols (ArOH) from BB are oxidized to form phenolic secondary organic aerosol (SOA) under moderate temperatures and sunlight. Here, we explore whether phenolic SOA is also formed in a cold, relatively dark, high-latitude city during winter. We use measurements from the 2022 ALPACA field campaign in Fairbanks, Alaska,

Photochemistry and pharmacology of 9, 19-cyclolanostane glycosides isolated from genus Cimicifuga.

The constituents of Cimicifuga plants have been extensively investigated, and the principal metabolites are 9, 19-cyclolanostane triterpenoid glycosides, which often exhibit extensive pharmacological activities. 9, 19-Cyclolanostane triterpenoid glycosides are distributed widely in genus Cimicifuga rather than in other members of the Ranunculaceae family. So far, more than 140 cycloartane triterpene glycosides have been isolated from Cimicifuga spp.. The aim of this review was to summarize all 9, 19-cyclolanostane triterpenoid glycosides based on the available relevant scientific literatures f

Photochemistry and photocytotoxicity of alkaloids from Goldenseal (Hydrastis canadensis L.) 1. Berberine.

Goldenseal is an herb which is widely used for many medical applications such as in eyewashes and skin lotions and which is currently undergoing testing by the National Toxicology Program. The main alkaloid constituent of Goldenseal is berberine. The topical application of Goldenseal or berberine to the skin or eyes raises the possibility that an adverse phototoxic reaction may result from an interaction between the alkaloid and light. We have therefore studied the photochemistry of berberine in different solvents and its phototoxicty to HaCaT keratinocytes. Irradiation of berberine in aqueous

An Ultrafast Infrared and UV-Vis Study of the Photochemistry of 2-Naphthaloxycarbonyl Azide.

The photochemistry and photophysics of 2-naphthaloxycarbonyl azide was studied in solution at ambient temperature with femtosecond (fs) time-resolved infrared (IR) and UV-vis spectroscopic methods. An upper singlet excited state of the azide, Sn (n > 1), decays by three processes: relaxation to azide S1, nitrogen extrusion and formation of the singlet nitrene, and fragmentation to form the ·OCN3 and 2-NpO· radicals. The decay of the S1 state of the azide correlates with 3-isocyanatonaphthalen-2(3H)-one formation, which, in turn, slowly converts to 3-isocyanatonaphthalen-2-ol. The singlet nitre

Photochemistry of SO2 at the Air-Water Interface: A Source of OH and HOSO Radicals.

The photochemistry of sulfur dioxide in the near UV-vis energy range has been studied in aqueous environments. The combination of previously reported experimental measurements with accurate quantum chemical calculations achieved in this work reveals that the process represents an important source of OH radicals in the troposphere. It implicates the reaction of the lowest triplet excited state of SO2 with a water molecule. When the process occurs in the gas-phase, photochemical OH production is only significant under high humidity conditions and high SO2 concentrations as those measured in poll

Photochemistry and in vitro phototoxicity studies of levomepromazine (methotrimeprazine), a phototoxic neuroleptic drug.

The neuroleptic drug levomepromazine (1, previously known as methotrimeprazine) is photolabile under UV-A and UV-B light in aerobic conditions. Irradiation of a methanol solution of this drug produces one photoproduct, resulting from the oxidation of 1 to its sulfoxide parent. It is demonstrated that photodegradation occurs via type II mechanism involving irreversible trapping of self-photogenerated singlet molecular oxygen. 1 shows a photohemolytic effect on human erythrocytes and photoinducers lipid peroxidation.

Thermal optima of photosynthetic functions and thermostability of photochemistry in cork oak seedlings.

Temperature effects on photosynthesis were studied in seedlings of evergreen Mediterranean cork oak (Quercus suber L.). Responses to changes in temperature and the temperature optima of maximal carboxylation rate (V(cmax)) and maximal light-driven electron flux (J(max)) were estimated from gas exchange measurements and a leaf-level photosynthesis model. The estimated temperature optima were approximately 34 and 33 degrees C for V(cmax) and J(max), respectively, which fall within the lower range of temperature optima previously observed in deciduous tree species. The thermostability of the phot

Photochemistry of Sulfur Dioxide Mediated by Charge Transfer through Intermolecular Chalcogen Bonds.

The photochemistry of sulfur dioxide (SO2) plays a crucial role in the Earth's atmosphere. In contrast to the well-established photochemistry of free SO2, the electronic properties and reactivity of SO2 complexes with other atmospherically relevant gas molecules are barely known. Herein, we demonstrate that the photochemistry of SO2 can be dramatically influenced by the first formation of charge-transfer (CT) prereaction complexes through intermolecular chalcogen bonds. Specifically, the prototype sulfur-sulfur bonded complex between SO2 and hydrogen sulfide (H2S) displays a strong CT absorpti

UV/Vis Spectroscopy of Copper Formate Clusters: Insight into Metal-Ligand Photochemistry.

The electronic structure and photochemistry of copper formate clusters, CuI 2 (HCO2 )3 - and CuII n (HCO2 )2n+1 - , n≤8, are investigated in the gas phase by using UV/Vis spectroscopy in combination with quantum chemical calculations. A clear difference in the spectra of clusters with CuI and CuII copper ions is observed. For the CuI species, transitions between copper d and s/p orbitals are recorded. For stoichiometric CuII formate clusters, the spectra are dominated by copper d-d transitions and charge-transfer excitations from formate to the vacant copper d orbital. Calculations reveal the

From reproducibility to comparability in computational photochemistry: lessons from the PhotoChem explorer prototype.

We present the PhotoChem Explorer (PCE) prototype, a proof-of-concept web-based platform that represents computational photochemistry studies of gas-phase molecules in a structured and queryable form. Rather than treating excited-state dynamics simulations as isolated results reported in heterogeneous formats and across different sources, PCE organizes studies according to their molecular systems, computational workflows, methodological choices, and associated observables, facilitating that relationships and trends can be explored systematically across studies. In this way, the prototype illus

Solution photochemistry of [p-(dimethylamino)phenyl]pentazole (DMAPP) at 193 and 300 nm.

The photochemistry of [p-(dimethylamino)phenyl]pentazole (DMAPP) at 193 nm and in the near UV is reported, with emphasis on the nature of the final stable products. The (dimethylamino)phenyl azide (DMAPA) is found as a major product in MeCN, but not in dichloromethane (DCM). (In this paper the acronyms DMAPP and DMAPA refer to the para isomers.) The photochemistry of DMAPA is also explored for comparison. The data obtained in MeCN solutions are consistent with the initial formation of the corresponding nitrene, but in DCM, different products are found, on the basis of NMR data. In the case of

The Human Circadian Clock Protein Cryptochrome-1 Responds to Photochemistry by Conformational Changes.

The human clock protein cryptochrome-1 (HsCRY1) can be targeted by small molecular modulators to shift the 24 h rhythm, opening up possibilities for treating circadian disorders. GO1323 is a photopharmacological compound that selectively binds to HsCRY1 and enables light-controlled manipulation of the circadian rhythm via photoisomerization. We synthesized isotope-labeled and unlabeled GO1323 to investigate conformational changes in full-length HsCRY1 that are caused by isomerization of GO1323 using infrared difference spectroscopy. Activation of GO1323 induces specific changes in secondary st

Enhancing Molecular Change: Iron-Mediated Photochemistry Increases DOM Transformation in Tropical Peatland Canals.

Drainage and deforestation of tropical peatlands release large amounts of dissolved organic matter (DOM) and iron (Fe) in sunlit drainage canals. Rapid sunlight-driven photochemical degradation of this DOM has been shown to reintroduce millennia-old peat carbon into the active carbon cycle through greenhouse gas production. However, the impact of photochemistry on the downstream fate of DOM in drainage canals remains unknown because DOM transformation during tropical peat photodegradation has never been measured. We investigated the potential of Fe to impact the quality of photodegradation pro

Solid-state photochemistry of molecular photo-switchable species: the role of photocrystallographic techniques.

Over the last 30 years, the single-crystal photocrystallographic technique has been developed to determine the three-dimensional crystal and molecular structures of metastable species which have been generated in the crystal photochemically. Transition-metal complexes that have been investigated using this methodology include complexes that contain nitrosyl, dinitrogen, sulfur dioxide and nitrite ligands, all of which form new linkage isomers in the solid state when photoactivated by light of the appropriate wavelength. Both steric and electronic factors determine the level of the conversion f
