Prenatal androgens modify the reproductive response to photoperiod in the developing sheep.

In most seasonal breeders, photoperiod influences the timing of the transition to sexual maturity. In sheep, males and females express reproductive maturity under different photoperiods. Spring-born males begin the maturational process during lengthening days (spring), whereas females do so during shortening days (autumn). We hypothesized that photoperiod differentially influences the transition to sexual maturity in each sex, and that this difference results from the presence or absence of androgens prenatally. We monitored the timing of sexual maturity in male and female lambs (n = 8 each) a

Effects of increasing photoperiod length on performance and health of broiler chickens.

1. Broiler performance and health were compared from 0 to 42 d for lighting programmes consisting of near-continuous light 23L:1D (23L), a lighting programme where photoperiod gradually increased from 6 to 23 h between days 4 and 35 (INC) or an increasing-lighting programme with 1 h of light mid-way through the scotophase (INC + 1). 2. The increasing lighting programmes reduced growth rate and increased gain:food ratio from 0 to 21 d; INC + 1 growth rate was intermediate to the 23 L and INC treatments. From 0 to 42 d there were no differences in growth rate or gain:food ratio among lighting tr

Photoperiod affects reproductive responsiveness to 6-methoxy-2-benzoxazolinone in house mice.

House mice (Mus musculus) have traditionally been characterized as nonphotoperiodic because reproductive function is unaffected by day length in the laboratory. In the present study, the reproductive responsiveness of CF1 mice to a naturally occurring plant metabolite was assessed in animals that were maintained in either long (16L:8D) or short (8L:16D) photoperiods from birth until the end of the study. Males and females were implanted i.p. with either an empty Silastic capsule or one containing 6-methoxy-2-benzoxazolinone (6-MBOA) at either 21 or 60 days of age for 3 days. Other 31-day-old m

Response of mice to repeated photoperiod shifts: susceptibility to stress and barbiturates.

Three inbred strains of mice selected for their spontaneous aggressive behavior and differential susceptibility to stress were exposed to a controlled environment where on an average of once every 4 days for 76 days and subsequently on an average of once every 2 days for an additional 55 days a 12L:12D photoperiod was reversed by 180 degrees. This procedure did not affect the growth of the mice and appeared to reduce fighting. However, plasma corticosterone concentrations in all three strains of mice were high, and their response to a 24-hr cold stress was no longer evident. The most pronounce

Identification of photoperiod as a regulator of dopamine-mediated behavior in female mice.

Photoperiod is the primary environmental cue that regulates changes in behavior across seasons. Previously, we have shown that photoperiod has sex-specific effects on synaptic dopamine dynamics in the nucleus accumbens (NAc). Further, evidence suggests that the dopamine transporter (DAT) is a potential locus of action for the sex-specific effects of photoperiod on NAc dopamine. The NAc is a critical node within the reward circuit that brings motivation to action, and changes to NAc dopamine dynamics at the synapse can result in robust changes in behaviors. Cocaine is a psychostimulant that tar

The transcriptome of the ovine choroid plexus is regulated by thyroid hormone but not by photoperiod.

The photoperiodic control of seasonal functions requires the action of melatonin at the pars tuberalis of the pituitary and subsequent control of local thyroid hormone (TH) signaling by tanycytes lining the basolateral part of the third ventricle. Therefore, TH supply of tanycytes through the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) produced by the choroid plexuses (CP) is central to photoperiodism. Here, the transcriptome of the CP of the lateral ventricles was established by RNAseq in ewes maintained under three experimental conditions: ewes exposed to a short photoperiod (SP; 8.5 h of light), intact ewes

The Impact of Photoperiod on the Leptin Sensitivity and Course of Inflammation in the Anterior Pituitary.

Leptin has a modulatory impact on the course of inflammation, affecting the expression of proinflammatory cytokines and their receptors. Pathophysiological leptin resistance identified in humans occurs typically in sheep during the long-day photoperiod. This study aimed to determine the effect of the photoperiod with relation to the leptin-modulating action on the expression of the proinflammatory cytokines and their receptors in the anterior pituitary under physiological or acute inflammation. Two in vivo experiments were conducted on 24 blackface sheep per experiment in different photoperiod

Effects of photoperiod on morphology and function in testis and epididymis of Cricetulus barabensis.

Photoperiod regulates the seasonal reproductive rhythms of mammals by influencing the development and function of sexual organs; however, the underlying mechanism remains unclear. We examined the morphology and functioning of the main sex organs of striped dwarf hamsters (Cricetulus barabensis) under different photoperiods (short daylight [SD], moderate daylight [MD], and long daylight [LD]) and further investigated the underlying molecular mechanisms. There was an inverse correlation between blood melatonin levels and photoperiod in the order SD > MD > LD. Decreases in body and tissue weights

Melatonin duration gates photoperiodic vocal state change in a songbird.

Seasonally breeding animals concentrate courtship to a particular time of year such that their offspring will be reared in a favorable environment. In house sparrows, Passer domesticus, primary (gonads) and secondary (song, plumage, beak color, etc) sexual characteristics are expressed differentially depending on the photoperiod. Removal of the pineal gland (PINX) has no effect on seasonal rhythms in gonad size but alters the photostimulated increase in vocal rate and complexity. Administration of long durations of melatonin, indicative of short days of winter, prevents seasonal recrudescence

Photoperiodic responses of Sahelian malaria mosquitoes Anopheles coluzzii and An. arabiensis.

BACKGROUND: Throughout large parts of sub-Saharan Africa, seasonal malaria transmission follows mosquito density, approaching zero during the dry season and peaking during the wet season. The mechanisms by which malaria mosquitoes survive the long dry season, when no larval sites are available remain largely unknown, despite being long recognized as a critical target for vector control. Previous work in the West African Sahel has led to the hypothesis that Anopheles coluzzii (formerly M-form Anopheles gambiae) undergoes aestivation (dry-season diapause), while Anopheles gambiae (s.s.) A review on the effect of the photoperiod and melatonin on interactions between ghrelin and serotonin.

Ghrelin and serotonin, which exhibit rhythmic secretion profiles under feeding/fasting conditions, are sensitive to increases and decreases in the day length and form a close web of interrelationships in the regulation of energy homeostasis. Ghrelin and serotonin are biochemically and functionally linked to the suprachiasmatic nucleus, which is a circadian pacemaker, and melatonin, which is an internal transducer of photic environmental changes. Ghrelin and serotonin might be candidates for integrating photic and nonphotic signals, such as light and food availability in the central nervous sys

Photoperiodic modulation of clock gene expression in the avian premammillary nucleus.

The premammillary nucleus (PMM) has been shown to contain a daily endogenous dual-oscillation in dopamine (DA)/melatonin (MEL) as well as c-fos mRNA expression that is associated with the daily photo-inducible phase of gonad growth in turkeys. In the present study, the expression of clock genes (Bmal1, Clock, Cry1, Cry2, Per2 and Per3) in the PMM was determined under short (8 : 16 h light/dark cycle) and long (16 : 8 h light/dark cycle) photoperiods relative to changes associated with the diurnal rhythm of DA and MEL. Constant darkness (0 : 24 h light/dark cycle) was used to assess the endogen

Photoperiodic signalling through the melatonin receptor turns full circle.

Photoperiod exerts profound influence on the physiology of mammals through the action of melatonin on the neuroendocrine system. Over the last 20 years, studies have moved away from a melatonin receptor-focused approach to understanding how photoperiod regulates neuroendocrine activity through studies of downstream effects on gene expression. This paper reviews the recent progress made in our understanding of the effects of photoperiod on gene expression in the hypothalamus, and considers how this new information can be reconciled with the species-specific location of melatonin receptors.

The involvement of cyclic GMP in the photoperiodic flower induction of Pharbitis nil.

The involvement of cGMP in the regulation of the flowering of Pharbitis nil was investigated through exogenous applications of cGMP and chemicals that are able to change the cGMP level and analyses of endogenous cGMP level. Exogenous applications of cGMP and 8-pCPT-cGMP (a cyclic GMP non hydrolyzed analog) to P. nil plants, which were exposed to a 12-h-long subinductive night, significantly increased flowering response. NS-2028 (guanylyl cyclase inhibitor) inhibited flowering when that compound was applied during a 16-h-long inductive night, whereas SNP (guanylyl cyclase activator) increased t

The thyroid gland is required for reproductive neuroendocrine responses to photoperiod in the ewe.

A study was conducted to determine the role of the thyroid gland in three neuroendocrine responses to photoperiod; secretion of melatonin, PRL, and LH. Ewes were thyroidectomized (THX) in midsummer or left thyroid intact, and both groups were moved indoors to artificial short days (8 h of light, 16 h of darkness) for 90 days. Thereafter, a subset of both THX and thyroid-intact ewes was challenged with long days (16 h of light, 8 h of darkness) for 120 days. The other ewes remained in short days so that neuroendocrine responses to the photoperiodic shift could be distinguished from hormonal cha

What photoperiodic signal is provided by a continuous-release melatonin implant?

The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether the insertion of a continuous-release melatonin implant into ewes provides a short-day photoperiodic signal or acts as a functional pinealectomy (provides no specific photoperiodic signal but renders ewes incapable of responding to changes in photoperiod). Ewes primed with 60 long days (18L:6D) during the spring were moved to intermediate day length (13L:11D) for 66 days and then given one of five treatments: 1) short-day control, second drop in photoperiod to 8L:16D; 2) intermediate-photoperiod control, kept on 13L:11D; 3) pinealectomy and kep

Vole infant development is influenced perinatally by maternal photoperiodic history.

Vole pups were maintained from the time of conception in the same short-day (SD) photoperiod (10 h light/day, LD 10:14); groups differed only with respect to SD photoperiodic histories of dams before gestation, which simulated those experienced by dams breeding in autumn (SD-2, 2 wk of short days), midwinter (SD-21), or late winter (SD-26). Compared with SD-2 pups, offspring born to SD-26 dams matured more rapidly with respect to body size and reproductive status. Several other somatic and behavioral measures indicated that winter preparedness was greatest in pups whose dams had experienced 2

Functional maturation of the gonads of Turkish hamsters under various photoperiods.

The golden hamster, Mesocricetus auratus, is the only photoperiodic rodent to date that has been shown to fail to respond to inhibitory (i.e., short, less than 12.5 h/day) photoperiods until after pubertal onset. In other photoperiodic hamsters, mice, and voles, short photoperiods greatly retard gonadal maturation. The Turkish hamster, Mesocricetus brandti, is a photoperiodic rodent that as an adult is reproductively competent only on photoperiods of 15-17 h of light per day; photoperiods of less than 15 or greater than 17 h of light promote gonadal regression. In this report we addressed two

[Effects of the light level and duration of the photoperiod on the retina of albino rats].

Female albino rats were exposed during 3 weeks to various photoperiodic sequences and levels of illumination. As long as the light span of the photoperiod did not exceed 12L-12D, the damaging effects of the light, even when intese (3,000 lx), on the retinal were relatively limited. On the other hand, the 14L-10D photoperiodic regimen that is usually used in standard rat animaleries produced marked degenerative lesions on the photoreceptors under either 1,200 or 3,000 1x. Under lighting schedules of 21L-15D or 28L-20D, the photoreceptors were heavily injured by 1,200 OR 3,000 1X. The degenerati

Converging evidence that short-active photoperiod increases acetylcholine signaling in the hippocampus.

Seasonal variations in environmental light influence switches between moods in seasonal affective disorder (SAD) and bipolar disorder (BD), with depression arising during short active (SA) winter periods. Light-induced changes in behavior are also seen in healthy animals and are intensified in mice with reduced dopamine transporter expression. Specifically, decreasing the nocturnal active period (SA) of mice increases punishment perseveration and forced swim test (FST) immobility. Elevating acetylcholine with the acetylcholinesterase inhibitor physostigmine induces depression symptoms in peopl
