Mineral nutrient signaling controls photosynthesis: focus on iron deficiency-induced chlorosis.

Photosynthetic organisms convert light energy into chemical energy stored in carbohydrates. To perform this process, an adequate supply of essential mineral elements, such as iron, is required in the chloroplast. Because iron plays a crucial role during electron transport and chlorophyll formation, iron deficiency alters photosynthesis and promotes chlorosis, or the yellowing of leaves. Intriguingly, iron deficiency-induced chlorosis can be reverted by the depletion of other micronutrients [i.e., manganese (Mn)] or macronutrients [i.e., sulfur (S) or phosphorus (P)], raising the question of ho

Semi-Artificial Photosynthesis Enables Light-Driven Biomanufacturing in Non-Photosynthetic Bacteria.

Semiconductor biohybrid systems integrate microbial biosynthesis with semiconductor light harvesting to sustainably power energy-intensive chemical production. Although such systems have been widely explored in photosynthetic bacteria, extending them to non-photosynthetic biomanufacturing chassis such as Bacillus subtilis (B. subtilis) remains substantially more challenging, owing to peptidoglycan-induced nanoparticle aggregation and mass-transfer limitations, cytotoxicity, and inefficient interfacial electron transfer from loose adsorption between inorganic semiconductors and cells. Here, we

Ethanol photosynthesis from CO2 and H2O via a formate intermediate pathway.

Photocatalytic CO2-to-ethanol conversion offers an interesting route for intermittent solar energy utilization. However, the performance is impeded by slow mass-transfer and high dimerization barrier (>1.0 eV) of *CO intermediates, coupled with a kinetic mismatch between the short-lived carriers and the 12 e⁻ reaction. Herein, we develop a Z-scheme Cuδ+O/floral-like BN photocatalyst that achieves CO2-to-ethanol conversion with near 100% selectivity. The photocatalyst utilizes the three-dimensional structure and alkaline surface of BN to concentrate CO2 and directs transfer of long-lived carrie

Sulfate starvation response modules connect sulfur metabolism to photorespiration and photosynthesis.

Mineral nutrients are essential for plant growth and development. Sulfur (S), as a macronutrient, is incorporated into numerous critical S-containing metabolites that play key roles in mitigating both abiotic and biotic stresses. Understanding how plants regulate S homeostasis and integrate it with other physiological processes is crucial for developing crops that can better withstand environmental challenges. Here, we demonstrate that the conserved sulfate starvation transcriptional response across Arabidopsis, tomato, rice, and Setaria is limited to only seven genes. We further characterize

More shade or sun? How fluctuating light affects photosynthesis in cotton.

Natural light conditions are inherently dynamic, yet their effects on plant light acclimation remain ambiguous. We established two light regimes with the same daily quantum input [constant light (CL) and fluctuating light (FL)] with cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) cultivar Xinkang4 as the object, and measured leaf anatomy, chlorophyll fluorescence, photosynthetic gas exchange, and light induction kinetics. (1) Compared with CL, FL induced more shade-acclimated leaf morphology, with total leaf thickness reduced by 8.2%, palisade layer thickness by 11.3%, and total stomatal density by 16.7%. (2)

CO2-Dependent Promotion of Photosynthesis Drives Metabolic Photoacclimation in Chlamydomonas reinhardtii.

Light and inorganic carbon (Ci) drive photosynthesis, which fuels cellular maintenance, energy storage, and growth in photosynthetic organisms. Despite its pivotal role, how primary metabolism adjusts to contrasting light and Ci availability in algae remains elusive. Here, we characterized bioenergetics and profiled primary metabolites of photoautotrophic Chlamydomonas reinhardtii cultures grown under constant low/sub-saturating (LL) or high/saturating (HL) light with 2% (CO2) or ambient 0.04% (Amb) CO2. HL-Amb cells suffered photoinhibition and limitation of photosystem I electron flow at the

Ocean acidification modulates material flux linked with coral calcification and photosynthesis.

Coral reefs are essential for the foundation of marine ecosystems. However, ocean acidification (OA), driven by rising atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) threatens coral growth and biological homeostasis. This study examines two Hawaiian coral species-Montipora capitata and Pocillopora acuta to elevated pCO2 simulating OA. Utilizing pH and O2 microsensors under controlled light and dark conditions, this work characterized interspecific concentration boundary layer (CBL) traits and quantified material fluxes under ambient and elevated pCO2. The results of this study revealed that under increased

Effect of hydrogen sulfide on cabbage photosynthesis under black rot stress.

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S), as a potential gaseous signaling molecule, is involved in mediating biotic and abiotic stress in plants. Currently, there are no studies investigating the mechanism by which H2S improves photosynthesis under black rot (BR) stress caused by Xanthomonas campestris pv. Campestris (Xcc). In this study, we investigated the effect of exogenous H2S on Xcc induced photosynthetic impairment in cabbage seedlings. BR has an inhibitory effect on the photosynthetic ability of cabbage seedlings. Xcc infection can significantly reduce the chlorophyll content, photosynthetic characteri

Subnanometric alkaline-earth oxide clusters for sustainable nitrate to ammonia photosynthesis.

The limitation of inert N2 molecules with their high dissociation energy has ignited research interests in probing other nitrogen-containing species for ammonia synthesis. Nitrate ions, as an alternative feedstock with high solubility and proton affinity, can be facilely dissociated for sustainable ammonia production. Here we report a nitrate to ammonia photosynthesis route (NO3-RR) catalyzed by subnanometric alkaline-earth oxide clusters. The catalyst exhibits a high ammonia photosynthesis rate of 11.97 mol gmetal-1 h-1 (89.79 mmol gcat-1 h-1) with nearly 100% selectivity. A total ammonia yie

Reduced sulphur sources favour HgII reduction during anoxygenic photosynthesis by Heliobacteria.

The consumption of rice has become a global food safety issue because rice paddies support the production of high levels of the potent neurotoxin, methylmercury. The production of methylmercury is carried out by chemotrophic anaerobes that rely on a diversity of terminal electron acceptors, namely sulphate. Sulphur can be a limiting nutrient in rice paddies, and sulphate amendments are often used to stimulate crop production, which can increase methylmercury production. Mercury (Hg) redox cycling can affect Hg methylation by controlling the delivery of inorganic Hg substrates to methylators in

How does P affect photosynthesis and metabolite profiles of Eucalyptus globulus?

Phosphorus (P) has multiple effects on plant metabolism, but there are many unresolved questions especially for evergreen trees. For example, we do not know the general effects of P on metabolism, or if P affects photosynthesis via the internal conductance to CO(2) transfer from sub-stomatal cavities to chloroplast or amounts of Rubisco. This study investigates how P deficiency affects seedlings of the evergreen tree Eucalyptus globulus grown for 2.5 months with four nutrient solutions differing in P concentration. To determine why photosynthesis was affected by P supply, Rubisco was quantifie

Stronger Sensitivity of Plant Photosynthesis to Rising CO2 in High Elevation Ecosystems.

The CO2-fertilisation effect (CFE) on vegetation productivity is the major driver of the enhanced land carbon sink in recent decades. CFE theoretically increases with elevation due to the higher sensitivity of carboxylation to an increase of CO2 under lower CO2 partial pressure, but the elevation-dependent CFE pattern has been largely overlooked. By conducting a 6-year CO2 enrichment experiment (+100 ppm) in an alpine grassland, we show that elevated CO2 increased gross primary production (GPP) by 25.5% ± 4.6%. Water availability and plant biomass allocation modulates CFE during different seas

Developing carbon assimilation methods in duckweed for insights into photosynthesis and growth mechanisms.

Infrared gas analysis (IRGA) is the primary technique for quantifying CO2 uptake in plants, but technical obstacles have limited its application in aquatic species, inhibiting exploration of their photosynthetic mechanisms. Using an IRGA with a customized aquatic chamber, we developed a methodology for measuring CO2 responses in duckweed, a group of fast-growing, floating angiosperms. We compared three morphologically contrasting species that have commercial or environmental significance: Wolffia australiana, Spirodela polyrhiza, and Lemna minuta. Light response curves showed species variation

Regulation of photosynthesis, carbohydrate transport, and transcriptomic profiles in wheat by different fertilizers.

BACKGROUND: In winter wheat cultivation, the rational application of organic-inorganic compound fertilizers increases grain weight and improves yield; however, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. A 3-year field trial was conducted to investigate the effects of three fertilization regimes on photosynthesis, carbohydrate transport, and gene expression in wheat. The treatments included chemical fertilizer alone (CK), chemical fertilizer supplemented with composted pig manure (T1), and organic-inorganic compound fertilizer (T2). RESULTS: The T2 treatment resulted in significantly higher chl

Yes, we CAM! First evidence of CAM photosynthesis in a carnivorous plant.

Crassulacean acid metabolism (CAM) is a photosynthetic adaptation enabling higher CO2 concentration close to Rubisco and increased water use efficiency. It evolved in at least 38 plant families, none reported to be carnivorous. Here, we investigate CAM activity in the carnivorous genus Pinguicula, so far reported as C3, with succulent leaves and distributed mainly in Central America. Eight species of Pinguicula, most with seasonal heterophylly, were cultivated under controlled conditions and monitored for changes in diel acidification (ΔH+) when grown with abundant or limited water availabilit

Anoxygenic Photosynthesis in Photolithotrophic Sulfur Bacteria and Their Role in Detoxication of Hydrogen Sulfide.

Hydrogen sulfide is a toxic compound that can affect various groups of water microorganisms. Photolithotrophic sulfur bacteria including Chromatiaceae and Chlorobiaceae are able to convert inorganic substrate (hydrogen sulfide and carbon dioxide) into organic matter deriving energy from photosynthesis. This process takes place in the absence of molecular oxygen and is referred to as anoxygenic photosynthesis, in which exogenous electron donors are needed. These donors may be reduced sulfur compounds such as hydrogen sulfide. This paper deals with the description of this metabolic process, repr

Oryza coarctata is a triploid plant with initial events of C4 photosynthesis evolution.

Oryza coarctata is an obligate halophyte of wild species of rice which thrives well under high saline as well as submerged conditions. We report here for the first time that O. coarctata is triploid (2n = 3x = 36), though it was previously known as tetraploid (2n = 4x = 48). The chromosome number of O. coarctata was determined from mitotic plates of root tips and ploidy level was determined by flow cytometer, where it was found to be triploid (2n = 3x = 36). In addition, this species was found to possess several unique anatomical features in leaves such as presence of Kranz-anatomy, increased

Heterologous Expression of AtBBX21 Enhances the Rate of Photosynthesis and Alleviates Photoinhibition in Solanumtuberosum.

B-box (BBX) proteins are zinc-finger transcription factors containing one or two B-box motifs. BBX proteins act as key factors in the networks regulating growth and development. The relevance of BBX21 to light and abscisic acid signaling in seedling development is well established; however, its importance in adult plant development and agronomic species is poorly understood. Therefore, we studied the effect of heterologous expression of Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) BBX21 in potato (Solanum tuberosum) var Spunta. Three independent AtBBX21-expressing lines and the wild-type control were cu

An imaging method for oxygen distribution, respiration and photosynthesis at a microscopic level of resolution.

Biological samples are far from homogeneous, with complex compartmentation being the norm. Major physiological processes such as respiration do not therefore occur in a uniform manner within most tissues, and it is currently not possible to image its gradients in living plant tissues. A compact fluorescence ratiometric-based device is presented here, consisting of an oxygen-sensitive foil and a USB (universal serial bus) microscope. The sensor foil is placed on the sample surface and, based on the localized change in fluorescence signal over time, information about the oxygen consumption (resp

Controlled levels of salicylic acid are required for optimal photosynthesis and redox homeostasis.

Sudden exposure of plants to high light (HL) leads to metabolic and physiological disruption of the photosynthetic cells. Changes in ROS content, adjustment of photosynthetic processes and the antioxidant pools and, ultimately, gene induction are essential components for a successful acclimation to the new light conditions. The influence of salicylic acid (SA) on plant growth, short-term acclimation to HL, and on the redox homeostasis of Arabidopsis thaliana leaves was assessed here. The dwarf phenotype displayed by mutants with high SA content (cpr1-1, cpr5-1, cpr6-1, and dnd1-1) was less pro
