Slowing the spread of COVID-19: Review of "Social distancing" interventions deployed by public transit in the United States and Canada.

This paper presents a review of social distancing measures deployed by transit agencies in the United States and Canada during the COVID-19 pandemic and discusses how specific operators across the two countries have implemented changes. Challenges and impacts on their operations are also provided. Social distancing is one of the community mitigation measures traditionally implemented during influenza pandemics and the novel coronavirus pandemic. Research has shown that social distancing is effective in containing the spread of disease. This is applicable to the current situation with the novel

Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Loneliness Among Older Adults.

The COVID-19 pandemic has created a pattern of everyday physical distancing worldwide, particularly for adults aged 65+. Such distancing can evoke subjective feelings of loneliness among older adults, but how this pandemic has influenced that loneliness is not yet known. This study, therefore, explored the association between subjective loneliness and different time phases of the COVID-19 pandemic to explain the pandemic's impact on loneliness among older adults. The analysis employed a sample of 1,990 community-dwelling older adults aged 65-95 (mean age = 72.74 years; 43% female) in Switzerla

Protective behavior and SARS-CoV-2 infection risk in the population - Results from the Gutenberg COVID-19 study.

BACKGROUND: During the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, preventive measures like physical distancing, wearing face masks, and hand hygiene have been widely applied to mitigate viral transmission. Beyond increasing vaccination coverage, preventive measures remain urgently needed. The aim of the present project was to assess the effect of protective behavior on SARS-CoV-2 infection risk in the population. METHODS: Data of the Gutenberg COVID-19 Study (GCS), a prospective cohort study with a representative population-based sample, were analyzed. SARS-CoV-2 infections were identified by sequential sampling o

Alone in a Time of Pandemic: Solo-Living Women Coping With Physical Isolation.

For people in single households, living alone has become literal and absolute during the social-distancing measures related to COVID-19 and can lead to decreased health and wellbeing. In this article, we examine how solo-living women think, feel, make sense of, and practice COVID-19-related social-distancing measures and, consequently, physical isolation. During lockdown, we interviewed 23 solo-living women between the ages of 25 and 69 years living in Slovenia. We present three levels of responses to social-distancing measures: cognitive, affective, and behavioral. We identified dissonances b

Predicting real-world emotion and health from spontaneously assessed linguistic distancing using novel scalable technology.

Individuals who are better at regulating their emotions have been shown to have better physical and mental health outcomes. One promising emotion regulation strategy is psychological distancing, which involves appraising a stimulus with objectivity or spatial/temporal distance. Language-based psychological distancing (linguistic distancing [LD]) refers to the degree to which one implements psychological distancing naturally via language. A crucial, underexamined mechanism that may account for real-world emotion and health self-reports is spontaneous (i.e., implicit) LD. Using HealthSense, a no

An estimation of the effects of social distancing measures on transit vehicle capacity and operations.

The COVID-19 pandemic has a direct impact on public transport operations. In this paper, impacts on transit operations of the physical distancing measures deployed to slow the spread of the virus are analyzed and recommendations are provided. At first, two social distancing optimization solutions are provided in order to keep riders at a safe distance. The first is a discrete optimization that can be used in buses with fixed seats, while the second is a continuous optimization that can be used to distribute riders on a grid and be applied on a bus or subway platform. Assuming that the ridershi

Social alignment matters: Following pandemic guidelines is associated with better wellbeing.

BACKGROUND: In response to the Covid-19 pandemic, most countries implemented physical distancing measures. Many mental health experts warned that through increasing social isolation and anxiety, these measures could negatively affect psychosocial wellbeing. However, socially aligning with others by adhering to these measures may also be beneficial for wellbeing. METHODS: We examined these two contrasting hypotheses using cross-national survey data (N = 6675) collected fortnightly from participants in 115 countries over 3 months at the beginning of the pandemic. Participants reported their wel

Effectiveness of workplace social distancing measures in reducing influenza transmission: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Social distancing is one of the community mitigation measures that may be recommended during influenza pandemics. Social distancing can reduce virus transmission by increasing physical distance or reducing frequency of congregation in socially dense community settings, such as schools or workplaces. We conducted a systematic review to assess the evidence that social distancing in non-healthcare workplaces reduces or slows influenza transmission. METHODS: Electronic searches were conducted using MEDLINE, Embase, Scopus, Cochrane Library, PsycINFO, CINAHL, NIOSHTIC-2, and EconLit to

Using telemedicine to facilitate social distancing in otolaryngology: A systematic review.

OBJECTIVES: As the coronavirus 2019 pandemic puts strains on current models of otolaryngology practice, telemedicine is an attractive way for otolaryngologists to reduce in-person appointments while still addressing the health of their patients. This systematic review of the literature aims to identify the evidence basis for using telemedicine in otolaryngology practice to limit person-to-person interactions while achieving comparable quality to in-person services. METHODS: The authors gathered articles from three databases (Embase, PubMed and Web of Science), performed a comprehensive litera

The Early Impact of Social Distancing Measures on Drug Use.

Social distancing policies have been widely adopted in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. High levels of social connection are positively associated with beneficial health outcomes, while social isolation is associated with poor long-term health outcomes including reduced life expectancy. The present study evaluates the impact of social distancing measures during the early period of COVID-19 on substance use behaviors among those in the United States. Methods: We used an internet-based survey with participants (n = 157; 86 male) reporting a history of problems related to drug use. We relied on

The effect of COVID-19 stay-at-home order and campus closure on the prevalence of acute respiratory infection symptoms in college campus cohorts.

Evaluation of population-based COVID-19 control measures informs strategies to quell the current pandemic and reduce the impact of those yet to come. Effective COVID-19 control measures may simultaneously reduce the incidence of other acute respiratory infections (ARIs) due to shared transmission modalities. To assess the impact of stay-at-home orders and other physical distancing measures on the prevalence of ARI-related symptoms, we compared symptoms reported by prospective college cohorts enrolled during two consecutive academic years. ARI-related symptoms declined following campus closure

Risk Compensation: How Vaccination Impacts Social Distancing in an Online Natural Experiment.

Amidst mass immunization efforts to curb COVID-19 transmission, policy mandates enforced minimum physical distancing. Concerns arose regarding risk compensation, where individuals might reduce adherence to distancing if benefiting from multiple risk-reducing interventions. This study used an online natural experiment to examine the association of vaccination status and vaccine efficacy beliefs with social distancing preferences. Participants completed a distance-matching task, positioning avatars in stylized scenarios drawn from a 2 (location) × $\times$ 3 (activity) factorial design. Data we

Sexual Distancing During 5 Periods Around and During the COVID-19 Pandemic, Amsterdam, the Netherlands.

BACKGROUND: Social and sexual distancing (ie, abstaining from sex with persons outside one's household) was important in the control of the COVID-19 pandemic. Compliance to distancing measures can change over time. We assessed changes in compliance to the sexual distancing measures during five periods of the COVID-19 pandemic in the Netherlands. METHODS: Between November 2021 and March 2022, we used a structured questionnaire containing questions about sexual behavior and factors that could have influenced compliance with sexual distancing. Variables related to sexual behavior were measured f

The Impact of Work Characteristics on Social Distancing: Implications at the Time of COVID-19.

The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) continues to spread globally. While social distancing has attracted attention as a measure to prevent the spread of infection, some occupations find it difficult to implement. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the relationship between work characteristics and social distancing using data available on O*NET, an occupational information site. A total of eight factors were extracted by performing an exploratory factor analysis: work conditions, supervisory work, information processing, response to aggression, specialization, autonomy, interaction outside

Untying the Precise Impact of COVID-19 Policy on Social Distancing Behavior.

Social distancing has manifold effects and is used as a non-pharmacological measure to respond to pandemic situations such as the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), especially in the absence of vaccines and other useful antiviral drugs. Governments around the globe have adopted and implemented a series of social distancing strategies. The efficacy of various policies and their comparative influence on mechanisms led by public actions and adoptions have not been examined. The differences in types and effective dates of various social distancing policies in various provinces/territories of Pakistan c

Consideration on size, velocity and path of droplets emitted during running.

BACKGROUND: People began to wear face masks during physical activities due to spread of COVID-19. There are no previous studies about the need for wearing masks while running. METHODS: Assuming a citizen runner who runs full marathon in 4 hours, we verified the path and the amount of droplet dispersal, setting a humanoid mannequin with a mask in simulated running environment (Experiment 1). We also had six adults exercise in the same environment to examine droplet behaviors when not wearing a face mask (Experiment 2). Average droplet size was determined, and repeated measures ANOVA was carrie

Health risks of airplane boarding methods with apron buses when some passengers disregard safe social distancing.

Many airlines instituted social distancing practices to keep passengers safe during the pandemic. The practices include keeping the middle seats empty, reducing the number of passengers taking an apron bus from the terminal to the airplane, and prescribing that passengers maintain 1 m social distance of separation from other passengers in the aisle while advancing to their seats. However, not all passengers comply with a prescribed 1 m aisle social distance. Through agent-based simulations of passenger boarding when apron buses are used, we examine boarding policies adapted for the pandemic wh
