Prediction of performance reduction in self-paced exercise as modulated by the rating of perceived exertion.

PURPOSE: Rating of perceived exertion (RPE) is a scale of exercise difficulty and has been hypothesized to be a regulator of work rate during self-pacing. The goal of this work was to develop a dynamic prediction of RPE and to characterize the control strategy employed to reduce work rate during self-paced exercise using RPE as feedback. METHODS: Training and test data were acquired from the literature to develop a linear regression of RPE as a function of four physiological variables: core temperature, mean-weighted skin temperature, metabolic rate, and integral of relative oxygen consumptio

IL-6 receptor, IL-8 receptor and TNF-alpha238 (G/A) polymorphisms are not associated with Behçet's disease in patients of German or Turkish origin.

STUDY DESIGN: Cohort study. OBJECTIVES: To describe calf muscle endurance recovery and to explore factors predictive of poor calf muscle endurance recovery 1 year after surgical repair of an Achilles tendon rupture (ATR). BACKGROUND: ATR is a common sports-related injury and is often managed with open surgical repair. After ATR repair most patients return to usual activities 6 months after surgery. However, calf endurance impairment can persist up to 6 years, possibly impacting performance of daily activities and sport. METHODS: A secondary analysis of a 73-patient cohort from a randomized

Effect of Exercise Intensity, Duration, and Volume on Protein Oxidation During Endurance Exercise in Humans: A Systematic Review With Meta-Analysis.

Proteins are degraded and amino acids are metabolized in different quantities during endurance exercise. However, a clear consensus on protein oxidation during exercise has yet to be established. The main objective was to calculate estimates of protein oxidation during endurance exercise using available data. Additionally, we aimed to investigate the effects of exercise intensity, duration, and volume on protein oxidation. We systematically searched for research studies published in English in the online databases PubMed and Google Scholar in March 2023. The inclusion criteria were: (1) measur

Genomics May Be the Key to Understanding Endurance Training Pillars.

Endurance performance is primarily determined by three key physiological pillars: maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max), anaerobic threshold, and economy of movement. Recent research has suggested physiological resilience as a potential fourth dimension, referring to an athlete's ability to sustain performance despite accumulating fatigue. While the role of genetic factors in endurance has been widely studied, their influence on these pillars, particularly on fatigue resistance and long-term adaptation, remains an area of growing interest. This narrative review explores the genomic basis of endurance

Individually guided training prescription by heart rate variability and self-reported measure of stress tolerance in recreational runners: Effects on endurance performance.

The aim of this study was to determine the effect of endurance training individually guided by objective (Heart Rate Variability-HRV) or self-report measure of stress (DALDA-questionnaire) in comparison to predefined endurance training prescription for improving endurance performance in recreational runners. After a 2-week preliminary baseline period to establish resting HRV and self-reported measure of stress, thirty-six male recreational runners were randomly assigned to HRV-guided (GHRV; n = 12), DALDA-guided (GD; n = 12) or predefined training (GT; n = 12) prescription groups. Bone density in competitive cyclists.

To investigate current theories of the contributing factors to osteopenia/osteoporosis in competitive cyclists, we present a narrative review of published cross-sectional studies investigating plausible etiologies of decreased bone density in competitive cyclists. Aggregate from multiple published studies as cited. Bone mineral density in cyclists appears to be correlated positively to the cumulative amount of bone loading forces experienced over a lifetime. However, decreases in bone mineral density are noted over the short term if bone loading forces are removed, despite previous gains. Ther

A power equation for the sprint in speed skating.

An analysis of the start of the 500 m speed skating races during the 1988 Olympic Winter Games showed a remarkably high correlation between the acceleration of the skater in the first second of the sprint and the final time (r = -0.75). In this study a power equation is used to explain this high coefficient of correlation. The performance in speed skating is determined by the capability of external power production by the speed skater. This power is necessary to overcome the air and ice friction and to increase the kinetic energy of the skater. Numerical values of the power dissipated to air a

Perspectives on Concurrent Strength and Endurance Training in Healthy Adult Females: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Both strength and endurance training are included in global exercise recommendations and are the main components of training programs for competitive sports. While an abundance of research has been published regarding concurrent strength and endurance training, only a small portion of this research has been conducted in females or has addressed their unique physiological circumstances (e.g., hormonal profiles related to menstrual cycle phase, menstrual dysfunction, and hormonal contraceptive use), which may influence training responses and adaptations. OBJECTIVE: The aim was to co

From Sensation to Anxiety: The Mediating Effect of Physical Sensation and Experiential Avoidance on Exercise Anxiety Among College Students.

Negative physical sensation (i.e., negative reactions to the physical sensations with exercise) refers to the perception and attitude toward one's own physical health and exercise capacity under a specific stressful situation. It is affected by potentially stressful situations, negative emotions, and avoidance coping strategies, and it has an important influence on individual behavior. In the stress situation, the avoidance strategy of cognition, emotion and behavior caused by emotional disorder is called experiential avoidance. Negative physical sensation and experiential avoidance, as negati

Endurance exercise elicits a hepatic memory associated with improved metabolic function and protein secretion.

Endurance exercise protects against metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), yet whether these effects persist following cessation of training remains unclear. Here, we employed endurance training cycles in mice to isolate the hepatic memory of exercise. Our results indicate that endurance retraining potentiates systemic and hepatic glucoregulatory benefits. Exercise retraining persistently reduced hepatic steatosis, hallmarked by decreases in diacylglycerols and increased phosphatidylcholines (PC). Liver transcriptomic analysis identified lipid and protein secretory p

Physiological Evaluation for Endurance Exercise Prescription in Sickle Cell Disease.

PURPOSE: Although strenuous exercise may expose sickle cell disease (SCD) patients to risks of vaso-occlusive crisis, evidence suggests that regular endurance exercise may be beneficial. This study aimed to test (i) the safety and usefulness of a submaximal incremental exercise in evaluating physical ability of SCD patients and identify a marker for the management of endurance exercise and (ii) the feasibility of endurance exercise sessions in SCD patients. METHODS: Twenty adults with SCD (12 men and 8 women) performed a submaximal incremental exercise used to determine the first lactate thre

Overtraining Syndrome (OTS) in Three Endurance Athletes and Roads to Recovery.

Overtraining syndrome (OTS) is a significant medical condition observed predominantly in endurance athletes and characterised by a decline in performance and disruptions in multiple physiological functions. Given the increasing popularity of endurance training and the complex nature of OTS diagnosis, there is a compelling need for comprehensive case studies. The case series summarises one professional runner, one competitive runner and one recreational runner who were diagnosed with OTS. Key parameters observed include symptoms, diagnostic journey, recovery initiatives and return-to-sport outc

The Measurement and Application of Critical Speed and D' in Running: A Scoping Review.

Critical speed (CS) represents the maximal metabolic steady state in running, and D' represents the finite distance capacity above CS. However, there is currently no consensus on the optimal measurement and modelling methods to obtain CS and D' estimates, how CS and D' influence running performance, or how CS and D' have been applied within a training environment. The aims of this scoping review were to determine the specific protocols and modelling methods that have been implemented to quantify CS and D' in running; the deterministic potential of CS and D' for running race performance; and th

The Relationship Between the Moderate-Heavy Boundary and Critical Speed in Running.

PURPOSE: Training characteristics such as duration, frequency, and intensity can be manipulated to optimize endurance performance, with an enduring interest in the role of training-intensity distribution to enhance training adaptations. Training intensity is typically separated into 3 zones, which align with the moderate-, heavy-, and severe-intensity domains. While estimates of the heavy- and severe-intensity boundary, that is, the critical speed (CS), can be derived from habitual training, determining the moderate-heavy boundary or first threshold (T1) requires testing, which can be costly a

Renal function in endurance trained volunteers during prolonged restriction of muscular activity.

It has been demonstrated that changes in the functional status of the kidneys are basically responsible for the impaired fluid-electrolyte metabolism in physically healthy volunteers during hypokinesia (decreased number of walking steps/day). Thus, the objective of this investigation was to determine the functional changes of the kidneys of 20 endurance trained male volunteers aged 23 to 26 years with an average maximum oxygen uptake 65 ml.kg-1.min-1 during 364 days of hypokinesia (HK). All volunteers were on 14.6 km/day (10,000 running steps/day) prior to their exposure to HK. All volunteers
