[Function of the sodium-potassium pump and its corticosteroid regulation as factors limiting cardiac adaptation to severe physical exertion].

Experiments were carried out on male Wistar rats in order to clarify the leading biochemical mechanism responsible for an increase in the functional capacity of the heart. The obtained results indicate that the function of the Na,K-pump in myocardial sarcolemma is rather stable and deteriorates only during extreme exertion. The alteration of the Na,K-pump function due to a decrease in Na,K-ATP-ase activity leads to a decrease in the Na gradient and an accumulation of water in the cells which in turn reduces the capacity of the Na-Ca exchange mechanism and the rate of Ca removal from the myofib

The influence of vigorous physical exertion on cardiac demand under conditions of daily living among firefighters with elevated blood pressure.

BACKGROUND: Firefighters have a high prevalence of cardiovascular disease. The poor heart health of firefighters is implicated in their increased risk of sudden cardiac death (SCD). Exercise may be protective against SCD partially due to the immediate blood pressure (BP) reductions of 5-8 mmHg following exercise, termed postexercise hypotension (PEH) OBJECTIVES: To examine PEH under ambulatory conditions after a maximal cardiopulmonary exercise test (CPET) among career firefighters METHODS: Firefighters (n = 19) completed a maximal CPET and non-exercise control (CONTROL) in random order on sep

Physical exertion at work and addictive behaviors: tobacco, cannabis, alcohol, sugar and fat consumption: longitudinal analyses in the CONSTANCES cohort.

We examined the prospective association of physical exertion at work with subsequent tobacco, cannabis, alcohol use, and sugar and fat consumption. Volunteers of the French population-based CONSTANCES cohort currently employed were included from 2012 to 2017 for tobacco and cannabis outcomes (n = 100,612), and from 2012 to 2016 for alcohol and sugar and fat outcomes (n = 75,414). High level of physical exertion at work was defined as a score ≥ 12 at the Rating Perceived Exertion Borg scale. Substance use was self-reported and diet rich in sugar and fat was obtained from principal component ana

[Changes in sinus function at rest and during physical exertion after permanent atrial electrostimulation in patients with sick sinus syndrome].

We studied the unnatural history of sinus node function in severe sick sinus syndrome treated with AAI or DDD pacemakers. In 19 patients (10 m; 9 f; mean age +/- 1 SD 69 +/- 7 years) we executed serial bicycle exercise tests and electrophysiological studies before, 7 days and 3 months after pacemaker implant. Sinus heart rate at maximum effort was: 118 +/- 23 beats/min and 117 +/- 23 beats/min (two different evaluations) before pacemaker implant, 125 +/- 21 beats/min after 7 days (p less than 0.05) and 133 +/- 20 beats/min after 3 months (p less than 0.001) with an average increment of 12.7%.

Ratings of Perceived Exertion During Walking: Predicting Major Mobility Disability and Effect of Structured Physical Activity in Mobility-Limited Older Adults.

BACKGROUND: This study evaluated the association between ratings of perceived exertion (RPE) of walking and major mobility disability (MMD), as well as their transitions in response to a physical activity (PA) compared to a health education (HE) program. METHODS: Older adults (n = 1633) who were at risk for mobility impairment were randomized to structured PA or HE programs. During a 400 m walk, participants rated exertion as "light" or "hard." An MMD event was defined as the inability to walk 400 m. MMD events and RPE values were assessed every 6 months for an average of 2.6 years. RESULTS:

Contribution of medical resonance imaging in the return to physical activity after exertional rhabdomyolysis a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Exertional rhabdomyolysis (ER) is the breakdown of muscle cells that occurs after intensive physical activity. Although a cautious and gradual return to physical activity (RTPA) is recommended after an episode of ER, physical sequelae are reported long afterwards. CASE REPORT: We present the case of a 31-year-old untrained amateur runner with no prior medical history who developed heat stroke, ER, and acute kidney failure on the occasion of a half-marathon. Three months later, whereas the patient was symptom-free and CK levels were normal, an MRI revealed typical signs of rhabdo

Exploring the Psychological Effects and Physical Exertion of Using Different Movement Interactions in Casual Exergames That Promote Active Microbreaks: Quasi-Experimental Study.

BACKGROUND: Prolonged sedentary behavior, such as sitting or reclining, has consistently been identified as a stand-alone risk factor for heightened cardiometabolic risk and overall mortality. Conversely, interrupting sedentary periods by incorporating short, active microbreaks has been shown to mitigate the negative effects of sedentary behavior. Casual exergames, which mix elements of casual gaming with physical activity, are one prospective intervention to reduce sedentary behavior because they require physical exertion. Casual exergames have shown promise in fostering emotional and physica

Effects of Physical Exertion on Early Changes in Blood-Based Brain Biomarkers: Implications for the Acute Point of Care Diagnosis of Concussion.

Blood-based brain biomarkers (BBM) such as glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) and ubiquitin carboxy-terminal hydrolase L1 (UCH-L1) have potential to aid in the diagnosis of concussion. Recently developed point-of-care test devices would enable BBMs to be measured in field settings such military and sport environments within minutes of a suspicious head hit. However, head hits in these environments typically occur in the setting of vigorous physical exertion, which can itself increase BBMs levels. Thus, efforts to develop BBMs as acute concussion aids in field settings need to account for t

Impact of pectus excavatum on cardiac morphology and function according to the site of maximum compression: effect of physical exertion and respiratory cycle.

AIMS: Previous studies have demonstrated diverse cardiac manifestations in patients with pectus excavatum (PEX), although mostly addressing morphological or physiological impact as separate findings. Using multimodality imaging, we evaluated the impact of PEX on cardiac morphology and function according to the site of maximum compression, and the effect of exertion and breathing. METHODS AND RESULTS: All patients underwent chest computed tomography, cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR), and stress echocardiography (echo) in order to establish surgical candidacy. We evaluated diastolic function an

Effects of transcranial direct current stimulation on time limit and ratings of perceived exertion in physically active women.

The limiting factors of maximum performance in humans have been extensively investigated. The aim of this study was to verify the acute effects of transcranial direct current stimulation on time limit (i.e., the time by which an individual is able to sustain a certain intensity of effort) at 100% of peak power (tlim@100%PP) and ratings of perceived exertion (RPE). Eleven moderately active women underwent an anthropometric evaluation and a maximal incremental test in the cycle ergometer, in order to obtain peak power (PP). At the two subsequent visits, which were separated by 48-72h, participan

Dynamics of pleasure-displeasure at the limit of exercise tolerance: conceptualizing the sense of exertional physical fatigue as an affective response.

The search for variables involved in the regulation and termination of exercise performance has led to integrative models that attribute a central role to the brain and utilize an array of psychological terms (e.g. sensation, perception, discomfort, tolerance). We propose that theorizing about exercise regulation would benefit from establishing cross-disciplinary bridges to research fields, such as affective psychology and neuroscience, in which changes along the dimension of pleasure-displeasure are considered the main channel via which homeostatic perturbations enter consciousness and dictat
