Kardar-Parisi-Zhang Physics in Optically Confined Continuous Polariton Condensates.

Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) scaling has been observed in discrete polariton lattices, enabled by engineered band structures that stabilize the condensate. Whether this universality extends to intrinsically continuous systems with natural noise regularization remains an open question. We propose and numerically demonstrate KPZ scaling in a continuous quasi-one-dimensional polariton condensate stabilized by optical confinement in the transversal direction. Large-scale simulations of the stochastic Gross-Pitaevskii equation, with experimentally relevant parameters, reveal temporal and spatial scali

An unsupervised physics-informed neural deconvolution framework for ultrasound imaging.

Objective. Point spread function (PSF) and clutter noise are primary causes of ultrasound quality degradation. Physical deconvolution can reduce PSF effects but is sensitive to high-frequency noise, whereas deep learning often requires large labeled datasets and may introduce non-physical artifacts. Therefore, this study aims to develop an unsupervised and physically interpretable framework for robust and effective ultrasound image reconstruction.Approach. We propose an unsupervised physics-informed deconvolution network framework (UPIDN) that bridges the strengths of physical modeling and dee

Optimizing gadolinium-enhanced CNS MRI: From physics to clinical practice.

Gadolinium-based contrast agents (GBCAs) are essential for the evaluation of central nervous system (CNS) disorders, enhancing lesion detection, characterization, and therapeutic monitoring. Despite their widespread use and overall safety, their application in daily practice may be, in some cases, suboptimal due to technical or interpretative issues, including incorrect dosing, inadequate timing of acquisition, and sequence parameter adjustments. Although multiple GBCAs demonstrate comparable diagnostic performance, safety concerns such as hypersensitivity reactions, nephrogenic systemic fibro

Perspectives on physics-based one-dimensional modeling of lung physiology.

The need to understand how infection spreads to the deep lung was acutely realized during the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic. The challenge of modeling virus laden aerosol transport and deposition in the airways, coupled with mucus clearance, and infection kinetics, became evident. This perspective provides a consolidated view of coupled one-dimensional physics-based mathematical models to probe multifaceted aspects of lung physiology. Successes of 1D trumpet models in providing mechanistic insights into lung function and optimalities are reviewed while i

'Not so intuitive' physics: Orientation supersedes stability in prioritizing attention.

In our daily life, we encounter a wide array of objects. However, we have a limited understanding of how the stability of these objects influences how we allocate our attention. To address this, we have investigated how perceived stability interacts with our attentional system using a modified version of the cueless temporal order judgement task. Here, participants were presented with stable and unstable objects, separated by small temporal intervals, and asked to report which object appeared first in the display. Each of our experiments employed a different pair of stable (i.e., presented upr

Ultrasound-assisted multi-physics coupling numerical simulation and hydrophone verification.

Ultrasonic external field enhancement technology overcomes many defects of traditional metallurgy with its cavitation, mechanical and thermal effects, and is widely applied in enhanced leaching and purification processes of hydrometallurgy. However, research on the acoustic field characteristics in the enhancement process remains limited. In this study, a multiphysics coupled model incorporating ultrasound, mechanical stirring, and thermal effects is developed using COMSOL Multiphysics. The effects of ultrasonic horn position, reactor geometry, ultrasonic frequency and power, ultrasonic horn d

CatBoost with physics-based metaheuristics for thyroid cancer recurrence prediction.

Thyroid Cancer (TC) is the uncontrolled growth of carcinogenic cells in the thyroid gland, with a higher recurrence rate than other cancers. Early detection of TC recurrence (TCR) is crucial for timely intervention. This study develops machine-learning algorithms that reduce features while maintaining high performance. Previous studies on the Differentiated Thyroid Cancer Recurrence (DTCR) dataset struggled to improve performance with feature reduction, and misclassification causes remained unexplored. This work proposes three Physics-based Metaheuristic Algorithms (PBMHAs)—Energy Valley Optim

Decoding the physics of observed actions in the human brain.

Recognizing goal-directed actions is a computationally challenging task, requiring not only the visual analysis of body movements, but also analysis of how these movements causally impact, and thereby induce a change in, those objects targeted by an action. We tested the hypothesis that the analysis of body movements and the effects they induce relies on distinct neural representations in superior and anterior inferior parietal lobe (SPL and aIPL). In four fMRI sessions, participants observed videos of actions (e.g. breaking stick, squashing plastic bottle) along with corresponding point-light

Statistical physics and dynamical systems perspectives on geophysical extreme events.

Statistical physics and dynamical systems theory are key tools to study high-impact geophysical events such as temperature extremes, cyclones, thunderstorms, geomagnetic storms, and many others. Despite the intrinsic differences between these events, they all originate as temporary deviations from the typical trajectories of a geophysical system, resulting in well-organized, coherent structures at characteristic spatial and temporal scales. While statistical extreme value analysis techniques are capable of providing return times and probabilities of occurrence of certain geophysical events, th

Physics-informed line graph neural network for power flow calculation.

Power flow calculation plays a significant role in the operation and planning of modern power systems. Traditional numerical calculation methods have good interpretability but high time complexity. They are unable to cope with increasing amounts of data in power systems; therefore, many machine learning based methods have been proposed for more efficient power flow calculation. Despite the good performance of these methods in terms of computation speed, they often overlook the importance of transmission lines and do not fully consider the physical mechanisms in the power systems, thereby weake

Trees suck. Notes on the physics of transpiration in trees.

The Cohesion Theory of the ascent of water in trees is a quiet triumph of modern science. Besides hydrodynamics, the physics of transpiration involves capillarity, evaporation and osmosis - phenomena which all have a history of considerable theoretical confusion. The aim of this paper is to supplement existing accounts of this physics in the plant science literature.

Computational electron-phonon superconductivity: from theoretical physics to material science.

The search for room-temperature superconductors is a major challenge in modern physics. The discovery of copper-oxide superconductors in 1986 brought hope but also revealed complex mechanisms that are difficult to analyze and compute. In contrast, the traditional electron-phonon coupling (EPC) mechanism facilitated the practical realization of superconductivity (SC) in metallic hydrogen. Since 2015, the discovery of new hydrogen compounds has shown that EPC can enable room-temperature SC under high pressures, driving extensive research. Advances in computational capabilities, especially exasca

Biology, Physics, and Genetics of Intracranial Aneurysm Formation: A Review.

Intracranial aneurysms (IAs) are persistent, localized dilatations of the arterial wall that are found in ∼3% of the general population. The most severe complication of IAs is rupture, which results in devastating consequences such as subarachnoid hemorrhage and brain damage with serious neurologic sequelae. Numerous studies have characterized the mechanisms underlying IA development and growth and identified several environmental modifiable (smoking, hypertension) and nonmodifiable risk factors (related to the histology of cerebral arteries and genetic factors) in its pathogenesis. Guiding Lead Optimization for Solubility Improvement with Physics-Based Modeling.

Although there are a number of computational approaches available for the aqueous solubility prediction, a majority of those models rely on the existence of a training set of thermodynamic solubility measurements or/and fail to accurately account for the lattice packing contribution to the solubility. The main focus of this study is the validation of the application of a physics-based aqueous solubility approach, which does not rely on any prior knowledge and explicitly describes the solid-state contribution, in order to guide the improvement of poor solubility during the lead optimization. [Dynamic paradigm in psychopathology: "chaos theory", from physics to psychiatry].

For the last thirty years, progress in the field of physics, known as "Chaos theory"--or more precisely: non-linear dynamical systems theory--has increased our understanding of complex systems dynamics. This framework's formalism is general enough to be applied in other domains, such as biology or psychology, where complex systems are the rule rather than the exception. Our goal is to show here that this framework can become a valuable tool in scientific fields such as neuroscience and psychiatry where objects possess natural time dependency (i.e. dynamical properties) and non-linear character

The physics of small-amplitude oscillation of the vocal folds.

A theory of vocal fold oscillation is developed on the basis of the body-cover hypothesis. The cover is represented by a distributed surface layer that can propagate a mucosal surface wave. Linearization of the surface-wave displacement and velocity, and further small-amplitude approximations, yields closed-form expressions for conditions of oscillation. The theory predicts that the lung pressure required to sustain oscillation, i.e., the oscillation threshold pressure, is reduced by reducing the mucosal wave velocity, by bringing the vocal folds closer together and by reducing the convergence

KAPI-LM: kernel-adaptive physics-informed learning machines for PDEs.

Physics-informed neural networks (PINNs) have emerged as mesh-free approaches for solving partial differential equations, but their learned representations are often difficult to interpret. RBF-kernel-based formulations such as sparse, physics-based, and interpretable neural networks (SPINNs) make the geometry of the physical kernels explicit and show that kernels adapt coherently around dominant solution features, motivating the question of whether all kernel geometries need to remain independent. To investigate this question, we introduce kernel-adaptive physics-informed learning machines (K

Hybrid Physics-Guided Neural Network for Vibration Sensor Nonlinearity Correction.

Accelerometers built on micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS) play a critical role in structural monitoring and machinery diagnostics; however, their accuracy suffers from intrinsic nonlinearities-dead zones, hysteresis, saturation, and colored noise. Conventional physics-based correction methods are interpretable yet cannot capture complicated hysteretic behavior, while purely neural-network approaches generalize poorly and lack a physical foundation. This paper proposes a hybrid architecture that combines a residual convolutional neural network with a physics-guided low-pass filter prior, f

triangulax: Differentiable Simulations with Triangular Meshes across Soft Matter Physics.

Many physical and biological systems -foams, membranes, elastic shells, or tissue sheets- can be mathematically described as 2D surfaces. These surfaces can host complex dynamics, like reaction-diffusion systems, and undergo drastic deformations. Here, we present triangulax, an open-source Python library for simulations and geometry processing that discretizes surfaces using triangular meshes available at https://github.com/nikolas-claussen/triangulax. It combines two features. First, discrete differential geometry provides coordinate-free discretization, which allows simulating strongly defor

Physics Insights into Liver MRI: Educational Guidance for Protocol Optimization.

MRI is the modality of choice for detection, characterization, and noninvasive diagnosis of focal liver observations. It offers excellent tissue contrast using multiple sequences and postcontrast multiphasic imaging. However, its diagnostic accuracy depends on appropriate selection of pulse sequences and imaging parameters. Poorly acquired images or suboptimal sequence parameter selection can lead to medical errors, such as missed lesions and inaccurate characterization of focal liver observations. A solid understanding of applied MRI physics can help optimize image quality and prevent such er
