Japanese macaque phonatory physiology.

Although the call repertoire and its communicative function are relatively well explored in Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata), little empirical data are available on the physics and the physiology of this species' vocal production mechanism. Here, a 6 year old female Japanese macaque was trained to phonate under an operant conditioning paradigm. The resulting 'coo' calls and spontaneously uttered 'growl' and 'chirp' calls were recorded with sound pressure level (SPL) calibrated microphones and electroglottography (EGG), a non-invasive method for assessing the dynamics of phonation. A total of

Physiology of the cerebellum.

The cerebellum is a central brain structure deeply integrated into major loops with the cerebral cortex, brainstem, and spinal cord. The cerebellum shows a complex regional organization consisting of modules with sagittal orientation. The cerebellum takes part in motor control and its lesions cause a movement incoordination syndrome called ataxia. Recent observations also imply involvement of the cerebellum in cognition and executive control, with an impact on pathologies like dyslexia and autism. The cerebellum operates as a forward controller learning to predict the precise timing of correla

Gastrointestinal Physiology and Function.

The gastrointestinal (GI) system is responsible for the digestion and absorption of ingested food and liquids. Due to the complexity of the GI tract and the substantial volume of material that could be covered under the scope of GI physiology, this chapter briefly reviews the overall function of the GI tract, and discusses the major factors affecting GI physiology and function, including the intestinal microbiota, chronic stress, inflammation, and aging with a focus on the neural regulation of the GI tract and an emphasis on basic brain-gut interactions that serve to modulate the GI tract. GI

Regional physiology of ARDS.

The acute respiratory distress (ARDS) lung is usually characterized by a high degree of inhomogeneity. Indeed, the same lung may show a wide spectrum of aeration alterations, ranging from completely gasless regions, up to hyperinflated areas. This inhomogeneity is normally caused by the presence of lung edema and/or anatomical variations, and is deeply influenced by the gravitational forces. For any given airway pressure generated by the ventilator, the pressure acting directly on the lung (i.e., the transpulmonary pressure or lung stress) is determined by two main factors: 1) the ratio between

Physiology of free will.

Free will is a perception that people have that they choose to make their movements. This perception includes a sense of willing the movement and self-agency that they are responsible for the movement. If there is a "free will force" that plays a role in movement selection, it should precede movement. There is no evidence for a driving force, and the perception of willing is not fully processed until after the movement. The perceptions of free will likely arise from an interaction between frontal and parietal areas. Free will might be considered to exist if a person's brain is functioning norm

Physiology of Yersinia pestis.

This chapter outlines the physiology of Yersinia pestis with emphasis on identifying unique functions required for tissue invasion and acute disease. These activities are opposed to often incompatible processes expressed by very closely related Yersinia pseudotuberculosis, which causes localized gastrointestinal infection. Gain of new information in Y. pestis entailed lateral transfer of plasminogen activator and anti-phagocytic capsular antigen via the plasmids pPCP and pMT, respectively, and derepression of the pigmentation locus facilitating colonization of the flea vector. The ability to s

Renal physiology of nocturia.

Renal function, diurnal fluctuations in arginine vasopressin (AVP) secretion, sex, and advanced age affect urine formation and may contribute to nocturia. Renal effects of AVP are mediated by AVP V2 receptors in the kidney collecting duct. Changes in AVP concentration have the greatest relative effects on urine volume when AVP levels are low; therefore small changes can have a large effect on renal water excretion. AVP is the major regulator of water excretion by the kidneys, and AVP levels have been shown to affect nocturnal voiding. Results of several studies show that patients with nocturia

Anorectal anatomy and physiology.

The rectum and anal canal form the last portion of the gastrointestinal tract. The rectum serves as a reservoir for fecal contents, and the anal canal regulates continence and defecation via synchronization of events regulated by complex interactions between sympathetic and parasympathetic nerves, striated and smooth muscle, and environmental factors. Normal function can be compromised by various pathologies. Investigation into these pathologies includes a detailed history and thorough physical exam and can be augmented by a number of different studies, including manometry, electromyelography,

The physiology of adiposity.

Normal energy homeostasis requires a balance between fat storage and energy utilization that is guaranteed by regulation of one billion fat cells which arguably constitute the body's largest endocrine unit. Such physiology is required to maintain normal adiposity which if depleted from under- or malnutrition results in lipodystrophy that causes hormonal, reproductive, and developmental abnormalities. Conversely, excess adiposity provides inflammatory secretagogues, particularly from central visceral fat depots that enhance insulin resistance, excessive fatty acids with lipotoxicity and hyperte

Physiology of vitreous surgery.

Vitreous surgery has various physiological and clinical consequences, both beneficial and harmful. Vitrectomy reduces the risk of retinal neovascularization, while increasing the risk of iris neovascularization, reduces macular edema and stimulates cataract formation. These clinical consequences may be understood with the help of classical laws of physics and physiology. The laws of Fick, Stokes-Einstein and Hagen-Poiseuille state that molecular transport by diffusion or convection is inversely related to the viscosity of the medium. When the vitreous gel is replaced with less viscous saline,

[Physiology of normal sleep].

Normal sleep of a young adult is composed of around 4 to 6 cycles of 90 minutes each. Two states of sleep have been established, REM sleep and Non REM sleep. REM sleep is mainly characterized by a complete atonia which creates a physiological paralysis. Slow wave sleep is characterized by an increase of more than 20% of EEG delta waves. Sleep could be represented by a two process model. The first one, the homeostatic component, represents the propensity to sleep, the second one, the circadian component, symbolizes 24th light-dark cycle of the rotation of the earth. The homeostatic component is

[Reproduction physiology and prostanoids].

Prostanoids, which consist of prostaglandins (PGs) and thromboxane, are produced from arachidonic acid by cyclooxygenases (COXs) as a rate-limiting step, and they exert various biological actions. Classically, prostanoids are suspected to be closely related to female reproductive processes such as ovulation, luteolysis and uterine contraction, as well as pathological processes such as fever generation and pain modulation. Recently the cDNA cloning of a series of prostaglandin-synthesizing enzymes and receptors enabled us to clarify which isoform or subtype is involved in each reproductive proc

Physiology, pharmacology and parasitology.

The developing resistance to current chemical classes of broad-spectrum anthelmintics and insecticides presents an undeniable threat to the long-term viability of the animal health industry. Alternative treatment strategies including vaccines, biological control and breeding of parasite-resistant animals are unlikely to be widely available in the near future and even then they will be integrated with chemotherapy. The significant cost of research and development of new therapeutics for food-producing animals, together with the small market share of animal health products, particularly in Austr

Laryngotracheal anatomy and physiology.

Thorough knowledge of the laryngotracheal anatomy and physiology is a prerequisite for understanding the pathophysiology and for an adequate treatment of patients with anomalies, stenoses and other pathology in this area. The larynx is part of the upper respiratory tract, our voice organ and it prevents the passage of secretion and food to the lower airways. Anatomical differences between adults and children, males and females are important to consider, as the size of the structures underlies the decision for the size of tubes and cannulas to be used. Knowledge of the muscles and mucosa is imp
