Leukocyte-endothelial interactions in pial arterioles and venules on development of cerebral ischemia in rats.

In vivo microscopy was used to study the interaction between leukocytes and the pial venular and arteriolar endothelium in rats during cerebral ischemia evoked by bilateral ligation occlusion of the carotid arteries. Specimens were obtained from 40 arterioles and 30 venules (diameter up to 40 micron) of the pia mater from Wistar rats (n = 7) subjected to ischemia for 5 h to respiratory arrest. The experimental data demonstrated significant differences in changes in the adhesion of leukocytes to the endothelium of arterial and venous microvessels during the development of hypoxia.

The origin of the spinal subdural space: ultrastructure findings.

UNLABELLED: Previous studies of samples from cranial meninges have created doubts about the existence of a virtual subdural space. We examined the ultrastructure of spinal meninges from three human cadavers immediately after death to see whether there is a virtual subdural space at this level. The arachnoid mater had two portions: a compact laminar portion covering the dural sac internal surface and a trabecular portion extending like a spider web around the pia mater. There was a cellular interface between the laminar arachnoid and the internal layer of the dura that we called the dura-arachn

Surgical treatment of the retethered spinal cord after repair of lipomyelomeningocele.

In a series of 75 patients with surgically treated lipomyelomeningoceles, the neurological condition of six patients deteriorated 6 months to 14 years after the operation due to repeat tethering of the spinal cord. The tethering resulted from postoperative dense adhesion between the cord and the overlying dura mater. Two of the six patients underwent conventional repeat untethering procedures, and the remaining four were successfully treated with a new surgical technique developed by the authors to prevent such dural adhesion. For this procedure, after complete untethering of the spinal cord,

Anatomy of the human spinal cord arachnoid cisterns: applications for spinal cord surgery.

OBJECTIVE: The goal in this study was to describe the overall organization of the spinal arachnoid mater and spinal subarachnoid space (SSAS) as well as its relationship with surrounding structures, in order to highlight spinal cord arachnoid cisterns. METHODS: Fifteen spinal cords were extracted from embalmed adult cadavers. The organization of the spinal cord arachnoid and SSAS was described via macroscopic observations, optical microscopic views, and scanning electron microscope (SEM) studies. Gelatin injections were also performed to study separated dorsal subarachnoid compartments. RESU

Glial Fibrillary Acidic Protein Astrocytopathy Based on a Two-Center Chinese Cohort Study.

OBJECTIVE: Glial fibrillary acidic protein astrocytopathy (GFAP-A) is a recently defined nosological form belonging to the class of autoimmune inflammatory disorders affecting the central nervous system (CNS). Here, we report the clinical and MRI characteristics, treatment, and prognosis of a GFAP-A cohort from two centers in China. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the data from 38 adult patients with positive GFAP antibodies and diagnosed as GFAP-A between June 2019 and September 2024. Clinical features, semiquantitative antibody test results, MRI features, treatment approaches, and prog

Cystic lesions accompanying extra-axial tumours.

We examined the mechanism of cyst formation in extra-axial tumours in the central nervous system (CNS). Cyst fluid, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and blood plasma were analysed in eight patients with nine peritumoral cysts: four with meningiomas, two with intracranial and two spinal intradural schwannomas. Measuring concentrations of various proteins [albumin, immunoglobulin G (IgG), IgA, alpha 2-macroglobulin and IgM] in cyst fluid, CSF and blood plasma provides insight into the state of the semipermeability of the blood-brain barrier (BBB) and blood-cerebrospinal fluid barrier. Peritumoral cysts

Reversible Focal Dystonia Secondary to Giant Perivascular Spaces.

Giant perivascular spaces (PVS) are rare, CSF-filled, dilated cavities lined by the pia mater that are most often asymptomatic radiological findings but can sometimes cause neurological symptoms. We present two exceptional cases of secondary focal dystonia induced by the mass effect on the basal ganglia caused by giant diencephalic PVSs. In both cases, we chose a surgical stereotactic drainage approach as a treatment strategy that allowed controlling the movement disorders. The beneficial therapeutic effect was sustained at long-term follow-up. We believe that similar cases could be addressed

Ventral anchoring of the conus medullaris: a new surgical technique preventing the radiographic recurrence of retethering after surgery for tethered spinal cord.

OBJECTIVE: Retethering is not an unusual operation for a congenital lumbosacral dysraphic spinal lesion. The present study aimed to assess a new surgical technique for preventing retethering. SURGICAL TECHNIQUE: After untethering the spinal cord, the pia mater or scar tissue at the caudal end of the conus medullaris is anchored to the ventral dura mater loosely using 8-0 thread, and the dura mater is closed directly. This technique is called ventral anchoring. RESULTS: Ventral anchoring was performed in 15 patients (aged 5 to 37 years old, average age: 12.1 years old) between 2014 and 2021.

Meningiomas of the velum interpositum: surgical considerations.

Meningiomas of the third ventricle are a rare subtype of pineal region tumor that arise from the posterior portion of the velum interpositum, the double layer of pia mater that forms the roof of the third ventricle. The authors review the literature concerning these meningiomas and present a case in which the lesion was resected via the supracerebellar-infratentorial approach. The relationship of the tumor to the deep venous system and the splenium of the corpus callosum guides the selection of the most advantageous surgical approach. Posterior displacement of the internal cerebral veins demon

The thread-protective cell, a new cell performing multiple tasks.

Our research work, which has led us to discovering the new cerebral cell, has started 30 years ago. An important moment was the year 1986, when we have highlighted it for the first time, during a study upon the clarification of some undiscovered aspects of cerebral atherosclerosis. In 2006 we have initiated the publishing of our results at three congresses (Cape Town - 2006; San Diego - 2009 and Los Angeles - 2011) as well as in three Atlases, form 2006, 2008 and 2010. By means of the electronic microscope we have analyzed to this purpose alone, a number of neurosurgery patients, with 1176 cer

Dural-pial arteriovenous malformation with unusual venous drainage.

A 41-year-old female presented with an uncommon mixed dural-pial arteriovenous malformation (AVM) with unusual venous drainage. Angiography at the initial operation for massive intracerebral hematoma in the parietal lobe showed no vascular malformations. Follow-up angiography 3 years later revealed a mixed dural-pial AVM at the previous surgical site. Unexpectedly, the venous drainage from the AVM was not into the patent superior sagittal sinus, but was retrograde into the contralateral cortical veins in the occipital lobe. No skull fracture or sinus thrombosis was demonstrated. The AVM was re

The meninges in human development.

The brain and cranial meninges were studied in 61 serially sectioned embryos of stages 8-23. Much earlier stages than those examined by previous authors provided a more comprehensive view of meningeal development. As a result, the possible and probable sources of the cranial and spinal meninges are believed to be: (a) prechordal plate, (b) unsegmented paraxial (parachordal) mesoderm, (c) segmented paraxial (somitic) mesoderm, (d) mesectoderm (neural crest), (e) neurilemmal cells (neural crest), and (f) neural tube. Some of these sources (a, b, d) pertain to the cranial meninges, others (c, d,

Electron microscopic studies on the lamprey meninges.

Lamprey meninges were revealed to consist of four layers. The I (outermost) layer was made up of densely packed collagen fibrils and microfibrils with fibrocytes interposed between them. It contained a vascular network (epidural vascular plexus). The II layer was a cellular layer, consisting of two parts: the outer, membranous and the inner, spongy part. The membranous part was composed of two sheets of type 1 cells which were held together by desmosomes, gap junctions and tight junctions. Continuous basal laminae were found on both the outer and the inner surface of the membranous part. The s

Borrelia burgdorferi adhere to blood vessels in the dura mater and are associated with increased meningeal T cells during murine disseminated borreliosis.

Borrelia burgdorferi, the causative agent of Lyme disease, is a vector-borne bacterial infection that is transmitted through the bite of an infected tick. If not treated with antibiotics during the early stages of infection, disseminated infection can spread to the central nervous system (CNS). In non-human primates (NHPs) it has been demonstrated that the leptomeninges are among the tissues colonized by B. burgdorferi spirochetes. Although the NHP model parallels aspects of human borreliosis, a small rodent model would be ideal to study the trafficking of spirochetes and immune cells into the
