Analyses of long-term fungal degradation of spruce bark reveals varying potential for catabolism of polysaccharides and extractive compounds.

The bark represents the outer protective layer of trees. It contains high concentrations of antimicrobial extractives, in addition to regular wood polymers. It represents a huge underutilized side stream in forestry, but biotechnological valorization is hampered by a lack of knowledge on microbial bark degradation. Many fungi are efficient lignocellulose degraders, and here, spruce bark degradation by five species, Dichomitus squalens, Rhodonia placenta, Penicillium crustosum, Trichoderma sp. B1, and Trichoderma reesei, was mapped, by continuously analyzing chemical changes in the bark over si

Windthrow causes declines in carbohydrate and phenolic concentrations and increased monoterpene emission in Norway spruce.

With the increasing frequencies of extreme weather events caused by climate change, the risk of forest damage from insect attacks grows. Storms and droughts can damage and weaken trees, reduce tree vigour and defence capacity and thus provide host trees that can be successfully attacked by damaging insects, as often observed in Norway spruce stands attacked by the Eurasian spruce bark beetle Ips typographus. Following storms, partially uprooted trees with grounded crowns suffer reduced water uptake and carbon assimilation, which may lower their vigour and decrease their ability to defend again

Formation of microbial inhibitors in steam-explosion pretreatment of softwood impregnated with sulfuric acid and sulfur dioxide.

Wood chips of Norway spruce were pretreated by steam explosion at 195-215 °C after impregnation with either sulfuric acid (SA) or sulfur dioxide (SD). The effects of different pretreatment conditions on formation of microbial inhibitors were investigated, and the inhibitory effects on yeast of pretreatment liquids and of specific inhibitors that were found in the pretreatment liquids were elucidated. Whereas the concentrations of most inhibitors increased with increasing pretreatment temperatures, there were exceptions, such as formaldehyde and p-hydroxybenzaldehyde. The highest concentration

Synchronisms between bud and cambium phenology in black spruce: early-flushing provenances exhibit early xylem formation.

Bud and cambial phenology represent the adaptation of species to the local environment that allows the growing season to be maximized while minimizing the risk of frost for the developing tissues. The temporal relationship between the apical and radial meristems can help in the understanding of tree growth as a whole process. The aim of this study was to compare cambial phenology in black spruce (Picea mariana (Mill.) B.S.P.) provenances classified as early and late bud flushing. The different phases of cambial phenology were assessed on wood microcores sampled weekly from April to October in

Dendroremediation of trinitrotoluene (TNT). Part 1: Literature overview and research concept.

BACKGROUND, AIM AND SCOPE: For decades, very large areas of former military sites have been contaminated diffusely with the persistent nitroaromatic explosive 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT). The recalcitrance of the environmental hazard TNT is to a great extent due to its particulate soil existence, which leads to slow but continuous leaching processes. Although improper handling during the manufacture of TNT seems to be a problem of the past in developed countries, environmental deposition of TNT and other explosives is still going on unfortunately, resulting from thousands of unexploded ordnanc

Conservative versus flexible physiological and metabolic acclimation of Norway spruce and European beech under elevated CO2, nitrogen supply and water availability.

Elevated atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) (EC) can enhance photosynthesis, biomass accumulation and water-use efficiency (WUE), but responses depend on water and nutrient availability and differ among tree species. Multifactorial studies addressing these interactions remain scarce. We examined interactive effects of EC (~700 μmol mol-1), nitrogen supply (nitrogen addition, N+; no nitrogen addition, N-) and water availability (well-watered, WW; drought-stressed, DS) on physiological and metabolic responses of more anisohydric European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.), which maintains stomatal opening

Densely packed needles along the shoots of evergreen conifers exhibit shade-acclimated photosynthetic characteristics even under full sunlight.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Evergreen conifer shoots that develop under full sunlight eventually move to the shade within the canopy as the tree grows. We hypothesized that densely packed needles develop shade characteristics even under full sunlight due to mutual shading, allowing them to survive longer in the canopy shade. METHODS: To test this hypothesis, we measured photosynthetic light responses at the shoot and needle levels in four species: Picea glehnii (shade-intolerant), P. jezoensis (intermediate shade-tolerant), Abies sachalinensis (shade-tolerant) and Taxus cuspidata (highly shade-toler

Net Ecosystem CO2 Exchange of a Subalpine Spruce Forest in Switzerland Over 26 Years: Effects of Phenology and Contributions of Abiotic Drivers at Daily Time Scales.

Climate change affects carbon sequestration dynamics and phenology in forests, especially in alpine and subalpine regions. Here, long-term trends in climate, net ecosystem CO2 exchange (NEE), net carbon uptake period (CUPnet) and their drivers were investigated, using 26 years of flux measurements in a subalpine spruce forest (CH-Dav, Switzerland; 1997 to 2022). CUPnet length, start (SOS) and end of season (EOS) were extracted from smoothed daily NEE time series. We used machine learning to determine the importance of environmental drivers on daily NEE and CUPnet. Annual mean and maximum air t

Climate sensitivity of the complex dynamics of the green spruce aphid-Spruce plantation interactions: Insight from a new mechanistic model.

Aphids can have a significant impact on the growth and commercial yield of spruce plantations. Here we develop a mechanistic deterministic mathematical model for the dynamics of the green spruce aphid (Elatobium abietum Walker) growing on Sitka spruce (Picea sitchensis (Bong.) Carr.). These grow in a northern British climate in managed plantations, with planting, thinning and a 60-year rotation. Aphid infestation rarely kills the tree but can reduce growth by up to 55%. We used the Edinburgh Forest Model (efm) to simulate spruce tree growth. The aphid sub-model is described in detail in an app

Stand age and fine root biomass, distribution and morphology in a Norway spruce chronosequence in southeast Norway.

We assessed the influence of stand age on fine root biomass and morphology of trees and understory vegetation in 10-, 30-, 60- and 120-year-old Norway spruce stands growing in sandy soil in southeast Norway. Fine root (< 1, 1-2 and 2-5 mm in diameter) biomass of trees and understory vegetation (< 2 mm in diameter) was sampled by soil coring to a depth of 60 cm. Fine root morphological characteristics, such as specific root length (SRL), root length density (RLD), root surface area (RSA), root tip number and branching frequency (per unit root length or mass), were determined based on digitized

Taxonomy and phylogeny of Dacrymyces (Dacrymycetales, Basidiomycota) with descriptions of a new species from China.

A new jelly fungus, Dacrymyces abaensis sp. nov., is described from the subalpine coniferous forests of Sichuan, China, based on morphology and ITS+nLSU phylogeny. The species grows on rotten wood of Picea and forms a distinct lineage within Dacrymyces. It is characterized by sessile, cerebriform, orange-yellow gelatinous basidiomata; subclavate probasidia (109-120 × 5.5-9 μm) that become bifurcate at maturity; clavate, thin-walled hyphidia (39-61 × 3.5-5.5 μm); and large, navicular basidiospores (36.6-56 × 11.9-15.6 μm) with up to 15 transverse septa and several longitudinal septa, germinatin

Fungal diversity of Norway spruce litter: effects of site conditions and premature leaf fall caused by bark beetle outbreak.

Fungi play an important role in leaf litter decomposition due to their ability to break down the lignocellulose matrix, which other organisms are unable to digest. However, little is known regarding the factors affecting components of fungal diversity. Here, we quantified richness of internal fungi in relation to litter nutrient and phenolic concentrations, sampling season (spring or fall), and premature leaf shedding due to low precipitation and infestation of bark beetles (mainly Ips typographus and Ips duplicatus). The study was conducted in 37-year-old Norway spruce [Picea abies (L.) Karst

Clinal variation in PHY (PAS domain) and CRY (CCT domain)-Signs of local adaptation to light quality in Norway spruce.

Detection of the genomic basis of local adaptation to environmental conditions is challenging in forest trees. Phytochromes (PHY) and cryptochromes (CRY) perceive the red (R)/far-red (FR) and blue light respectively, thus playing a fundamental role in regulating plant growth and development. PHYO and PHYP from conifers are the equivalents of PHYA/PHYC and PHYB in angiosperms, respectively. Norway spruce shows an adaptive latitudinal cline for shade (low R:FR or FR-enriched light) tolerance and requirement of FR light for its growth. We analyzed the exome capture data that included a uniquely l

Fire severity unaffected by spruce beetle outbreak in spruce-fir forests in southwestern Colorado.

Recent large and severe outbreaks of native bark beetles have raised concern among the general public and land managers about potential for amplified fire activity in western North America. To date, the majority of studies examining bark beetle outbreaks and subsequent fire severity in the U.S. Rocky Mountains have focused on outbreaks of mountain pine beetle (MPB; Dendroctonus ponderosae) in lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta) forests, but few studies, particularly field studies, have addressed the effects of the severity of spruce beetle (Dendroctonus rufipennis Kirby) infestation on subsequent

Rapid recovery of stem increment in Norway spruce at reduced SO2 levels in the Harz Mountains, Germany.

Tree-ring width of Picea abies was studied along an altitudinal gradient in the Harz Mountains, Germany, in an area heavily affected by SO(2)-related forest decline in the second half of the 20th century. Spruce trees of exposed high-elevation forests had earlier been shown to have reduced radial growth at high atmospheric SO(2) levels. After the recent reduction of the SO(2) load due to clean air acts, we tested the hypothesis that stem growth recovered rapidly from the SO(2) impact. Our results from two formerly damaged high-elevation spruce stands support this hypothesis suggesting that the

Large-scale importance of bark beetle outbreaks for standing deadwood and woodpeckers.

Resource pulses associated with forest disturbances can significantly influence biological communities, with interacting and sometimes lagged effects on species numbers. Among the most common disturbances in temperate forests are bark beetle outbreaks, which represent a resource pulse and initiate additional resource pulses of other insects and of deadwood. Moreover, bark beetle outbreaks are often followed by changes in habitat conditions due to canopy cover loss or salvage logging that can have contrasting effects on co-occurring forest species. However, the effects of this multi-resource pu

Efficient fractionation of spruce by SO(2)-ethanol-water treatment: closed mass balances for carbohydrates and sulfur.

SO(2)-ethanol-water (SEW) lignocellulosic fractionation has the potential to overcome the present techno-economic barriers that hinder the commercial implementation of renewable transportation fuel production. In this study, SEW fractionation of spruce wood chips is examined for its ability to separate the main wood components, hemicelluloses, lignin, and cellulose, and the potential to recover SO(2) and ethanol from the spent fractionation liquid. Therefore, overall sulfur and carbohydrate mass balances are established. 95-97 % of the charged SO(2) remains in the liquid and can be fully recov

Norway spruce needles as bioindicator of air pollution in the area of influence of the Sostanj Thermal Power Plant, Slovenia.

This paper reports the results of total sulphur content, photosynthetic pigments, ascorbic acid (vitamin C) and alpha-tocopherol (vitamin E) analysed in current-year needles of Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.) in the area influenced by sulphur emissions from the Sostanj Thermal Power Plant (STPP), Slovenia, in the period 1991-2004. Ten differently polluted sampling sites in the emission area of STPP were selected. After desulphurization of emission gases from STPP total sulphur content in needles decreased and vitality parameters of needles increased. Moreover, a strong correlation betw
