Pilomatrixoma is a relatively rare benign skin appendageal tumor, often presenting in the pediatric age group as a nodular lesion and most commonly involving the head and neck, making it amenable to primary fine needle aspiration (FNA) diagnosis. We report the clinical and histopathological findings of two cases of pilomatrixoma in children, both of which were initially misdiagnosed as small round blue cell tumors due to high cellularity and misinterpretation of the proliferating basaloid cells. Histopathology revealed basal cell proliferation and mitoses indicating that they were progressive,

Benign adnexal tumors of the skin, excluding pilomatrixomas, were identified in 28 patients between the ages of 4 and 20 years with a mean age of 15; 23 women and 5 men. Most lesions were described as papules and they occurred on the face, scalp and neck in 75% of cases. Trichoepithelioma and syringoma accounted for 56% of all neoplasms. Only one patient gave a history of familial trichoepitheliomas. The remaining tumors were examples of syringocystadenoma papilliferum, eccrine acrospiroma, and eccrine and apocrine hidrocystomas. Excisional biopsy constituted the treatment in all cases; only o

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Epidermal cysts and pilomatrixomas are 2 of the most common benign skin lesions in children, yet comprehensive epidemiologic data comparing their distribution remain limited. This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of these lesions in pediatric patients over a 13-year period at a single institution.
METHODS: A retrospective review was conducted of patients aged 0 to 18 years who underwent excisional biopsy with histopathologic confirmation between 2012 and 2025. Cases diagnosed as epidermal cysts or pilomatrixomas were included for comparative analysis. Age was cate

BACKGROUND: Pilomatrixoma (PMX) is a benign, quite uncommon, skin neoplasm, which is frequently misdiagnosed by clinicians.
AIM: We have analyzed 25 PMX to determine the agreement between clinical diagnosis, preoperative FNA characteristics, and corresponding histopathological specimens; moreover, reliable cytologic criteria for PMX and the differential diagnosis to avoid cytological pitfalls have been emphasized.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: By fine-needle aspiration (FNA) cytology a series of consecutive cases of PMX collected during last 5 years were studied. Smears were stained by Papanicolau

Research on pilomatrixoma has been limited, with most publications being case series or secondary reviews. This study aimed to analyze data from 1235 cases of pilomatrixoma to provide comprehensive information on demographic distribution, clinical presentations, and histopathological features of pilomatrixoma. A retrospective review was conducted between 1992 and 2024. The pathology database revealed 1235 confirmed cases. There was no significant sex predilection. The age distribution showed a bimodal pattern, with a childhood peak and a second, lower peak between ages 50 and 75 years (mean, 4

This report details the case of a girl of primary school age who was referred to our plastic surgery department with an ulcerating lesion on the nape of her neck. A firm mass was palpable in the underlying subcutaneous tissue. This lesion was accompanied by two smaller firm nodules: one in the adjacent tissue and another in the left preauricular region. Ultrasound and MRI demonstrated multiple calcified nodules confined to the subcutaneous tissue. An incisional biopsy of the ulcerating lesion confirmed a diagnosis of perforating pilomatrixoma; the lesion was subsequently excised, with no sign

Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is an autosomal dominant hereditary disorder. Neurofibroma is the most common neoplasm of this disease. This lesion is characterized by circumscribed soft or knotty skin tumors derived from peripheral nerve sheath cells. Numerous other neoplasms have been described for this tumor predisposition syndrome. This case report adds the diagnostic and therapeutic procedures in the case of an NF1 patient in whom the rapidly growing, nodular, subcutaneous tumor initially led to the suspicion of a malignant neoplasm. The tumor proved to be pilomatrixoma, which closely adhe

Podoplanin, a transmembrane sialomucin-like glycoprotein, is a specific marker of lymphatic vessels, and its expression is also considered to be associated with tumor invasion and tooth development. In this study, we examined the expression of podoplanin in calcifying cystic odontogenic tumor (CCOT) in comparison with that in other so-called hard α-keratin-expressing tumors such as craniopharyngioma (CP) and pilomatrixoma (PM). Immunohistochemical staining for podoplanin was carried out using surgical specimens of 15 CCOTs of the jaw, 19 CPs of the pituitary gland, and 15 PMs of the skin. Posi

It is controversial if the rare dermoid cyst of the testis should be classified as a variant of mature teratoma or separately. The spectrum of findings is also ill defined, as is the relationship of dermoid cyst to intratubular germ cell neoplasia of the unclassified type (IGCNU). This study therefore reports the findings in five testicular dermoid cysts that occurred in five patients, 17-42 years of age, who presented with testicular masses. Four lesions consisted of a keratin-filled cyst with a thickened wall, whereas one had islands of "shadow" squamous epithelial cells with superimposed ca

Pilomatrixoma, also known as calcifying epithelioma of Malherbe, is a cutaneous tumor originating from the hair matrix that commonly affects children. Pilomatrixoma is usually solitary and most commonly found on the face, neck, and upper torso, while the scrotum is considered a very rare site. We report a rare location and manifestation of pilomatrixoma as multiple, large, firm, calcified scrotal masses in a 32-years old man. An excisional biopsy was performed, and the diagnosis was confirmed.

BACKGROUND Pilomatrixomas are benign skin tumors that tend to occur in children. They most commonly arise in the head and neck region, but their appearance in the ear, especially the earlobe, is rare. Clinically, these lesions present as firm, non-tender nodules, occasionally with a reddish or bluish tint. Given the lesions' typical features, experienced clinicians may opt for surgical excision without extensive workup. Still, diagnosis can be challenging when the lesion is located in an unusual site, like the auricle, where it can resemble other skin conditions. In this report, we describe a

Pilomatrix carcinoma is the rare malignant counterpart of pilomatrixoma, a skin adnexal tumour originating from hair matrix cells. Pilomatrix carcinoma can arise as a solitary lesion de novo, or through transformation of a pilomatrixoma. Pilomatrixoma was first described erroneously as being of sebaceous gland origin but was later discovered to be derived from hair matrix cells. They are rare, slow growing tumours of the skin found in the lower dermis and subcutaneous fat and are predominantly found in the neck and the scalp. While known to be locally aggressive, no malignant form was thought

Pilomatrix carcinoma, a malignant counterpart of pilomatrixoma, is a rare skin neoplasm composed of basaloid and shadow cells that characterize differentiation toward the hair matrix. The authors present a case of pilomatrix carcinoma of the clitoris, a very unusual location not previously reported. Diagnostic criteria and differential diagnoses are discussed. Pilomatrix carcinoma should be differentiated from benign pilomatrixoma and other carcinomas with shadow cells, including basal cell carcinoma with matrical differentiation and metastases of visceral carcinomas with shadow cells.

INTRODUCTION: Although pilomatrixomas are frequently encountered by dermatologists and pathologists in the differential diagnosis of head and neck lesions, this is not usually the case among head and neck surgeons. A pilomatrixoma (calcifying epithelioma of Malherbe) is a benign tumour of the hair matrix cells. Histologically it is characterised by the presence of ghost cells, basophilic cells and foreign body cells. It may sometimes be difficult to histologically distinguish it from its malignant counterpart, the pilomatrix carcinoma. We report an interesting case of an ulcerated pilomatrixom

CONTEXT: Pilomatrixoma is a common head and neck neoplasm in children. Its malignant counterpart, pilomatrix carcinoma, is rare and found more often in men.
METHOD: Case report of a 21-year-old man with pilomatrixoma of the thoracic spine that underwent malignant degeneration to pilomatrix carcinoma.
FINDINGS: The appearance of a painless mobile axillary mass was followed by severe back pain 1 year later. Imaging revealed a compression fracture at the T5 level. The patient underwent resection of the axillary mass and spinal reconstruction of the fracture; the pathology was consistent with sy

BACKGROUND: Cutaneous adnexal tumours are uncommon and are rarely diagnosed clinically. Occasionally, these cases are encountered during fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) performed as part of the routine evaluation of skin or subcutaneous tissue lesions.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective study evaluated FNAC of skin adnexal tumours over a period of 10 years. Smears stained with Papanicolaou and Giemsa stains were reviewed. Cytology diagnosis was correlated with histopathological diagnosis, wherever possible.
RESULTS: A total of 34 cases of skin adnexal tumours were evaluated in

Pilomatrix carcinoma (PC) is a rare malignant variant of pilomatrixoma, a skin adnexal tumor originating from hair matrix cells. It is most often located in the head, neck region, upper back and upper extremities. PC has a locally aggressive behavior but metastasis only occur in 10% of cases. Mutations in CTNNB1, the encoding gene of beta-catenin, have been found in both pilomatrixoma and PC, but other molecular alterations are unknown. The authors present a case of PC in the clitoris, the third known reported case located on the external genitalia. The tumor followed an unusual clinical cours

BACKGROUND: It is unknown whether high-frequency ultrasound (HFUS) can evaluate invisible subcutaneous lesions. We aimed to investigate the diagnostic value of HFUS in invisible subcutaneous lesions.
METHOD: Patients with invisible subcutaneous lesions were prospectively recruited from two centres. Before undergoing biopsy or surgery, each lesion was independently evaluated by two clinicians. One provides a clinical diagnosis by only clinical examination and the other provides an integrated diagnosis by combining clinical examination and HFUS information. Diagnoses were classified as correct,
