Pilonidal sinus of the chin: mistreated as a dental fistula.

Pilonidal sinus is a chronic inflammatory condition associated with penetration of hair particles into the skin. It is rare in the chin area and, to our knowledge, there is only one such reported case. A 56-year-old man was previously admitted to a private clinic, with a hard mass on his anterior buccal sulcus. Three of the patient's teeth were extracted as the swelling was thought to be associated with a dental infection. Because the fistula did not resolve, the patient was referred to our department. Following radiological and clinical examinations, the hard mass was reached intraorally and

Prevalence of sacrococcygeal pilonidal sinus as a silent disease.

PURPOSE: The aim of this research was to determine the prevalence of sacrococcygeal pilonidal sinus disease (SPSD) based on clinical examination and histopathological evaluation. METHODS: Between January 1, 2010 and December 30, 2010, 432 corpses were evaluated in the Istanbul Central Office of Forensic Medicine Institute of the Turkish Ministry of Health. RESULTS: 41 of the 432 cases (9.4 %) had SPSD-related findings. 20 (4.6 %) had at least one sinus tract (clinical SPSD) and all of them had at least three positive histopathologic parameters. 16 of 41 cases (3.7 %) were clinically normal b

[Pilonidal sinus: an retrospective analysis of 205 cases].

Sinus pilonidalis or the sacrococcigea cyst, normally is considered a "small surgical pathology" and actually it is controversial disease regarding its pathogenesis and treatment. Today the congenital hypothesis of this pathology is not considered. The etiopathogenesis exclude vestigia embryonic origin and consider it an inflammatory disease. Traumatism of the sacral region, hirsutism, hormonal secretion stimulating, and furrow sacral furrow cutaneous, explain the prevalence of this pathology in the male sex and in the puberale age. It usually appears after the pubertà and extension one variou

[Ambulatory closed surgery for the treatment of pilonidal sinus].

Pilonidal disease (PD) is a common chronic disorder of the sacrococcygeal region afflecting young people. Despite several methods for treating PD have been described, the management remains controversial. Recent reports have advocated different surgical approaches such as open or closed technique, but recurrence plagues all forms of therapy. We conducted this case review to evaluate the validity of an outpatient closed technique in the treatment of chronic pilonidal disease. Between January 1997 and July 1999, 65 consecutive patients with quiescent chronic PD were electively treated by surgica

[Morbidity of Z-plasty in the treatment of pilonidal sinus].

21 patients were followed up on an average of 28 months following excision of pilonidal sinus and Z-plasty. There were 2 recurrences (10%), 3 hypertrophic scars (14%) and hypaesthesia of the skin flaps in almost every patient. 2 out of 3 patients (67%) were satisfied with the results. 5 suffer from the cosmetic appearance, 5 from pruritus, 3 (14%) have problems with clothing. About 1/3 experience discomfort when sitting and sporting. This morbidity causes us to recommend Z-plasty only in cases of a recurrence with strong discomfort or frequent recurrences.

Z-plasty for treatment of disease of the pilonidal sinus.

The theory of acquired origin of pilonidal sinus disease has been emphasized. Advantages of Z-plasty over the other surgical methods for treatment of this disease have been elaborated. The extremely low recurrence rate following Z-plasty for pilonidal sinus results from the fact that the operation was planned with the true physiopathology of the disease in mind. It is the deep intergluteal fold which predisposes to pilonidal sinuses, and this architecture is materially altered with the Z-plasty. In a series of 120 patients, there were only two recurrences and only five hematomas and wound absc

A simple surgical method of treating pilonidal sinus.

A simple surgical method of treatment was used in 63 patients with pilonidal sinus. Adequate block excision with primary closure is the basis of this technique. The problem of closure and obliteration of the dead space was solved by using absorbable sutures to unite fascia and subcutis in the midline, after mobilization of the skin and subcutaneous layers of the wound edges. In 59 (93.6%) of 63 patients treated, primary healing was obtained; in 4 (6.4%) disturbances of wound healing occured; and in 3 (4..8%) recurrences developed. The average stay in hospital was 10.4 days and the average heal

Mature tertiary lymphoid structures in pilonidal sinus disease.

Pilonidal sinus disease (PSD) is characterized by recurrent purulent abscesses or sinus tracts in the sacrococcygeal region. Although its pathophysiology remains unclear, mixed inflammatory infiltrates are seen on histopathology. We aimed to understand the spatial organization of immune cells using histologic and immunofluorescence techniques. We examined skin samples from 10 patients with chronic PSD and 5 site-matched healthy controls. H&E staining revealed dense immune infiltrates in PSD samples, including lymphoid and plasma cell aggregates. Immunofluorescence staining for T cells, B cells

Short-term outcomes of endoscopic pilonidal sinus treatment.

INTRODUCTION: Endoscopic treatment for pilonidal disease was initially described by Meinero in 2013. This minimally invasive technique has both technical and aesthetic advantages. The diagnostic application helps identify the anatomy of the pilonidal disease and the operative phase ablates and cleans the infected cavity. Our aim was to study the short-term outcomes of endoscopic treatment for pilonidal disease and to evaluate complications and recurrence rates. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A prospectively maintained database of all consecutive patients who underwent endoscopic treatment for pilonid

Endoscopic pilonidal sinus treatment: a prospective multicentre trial.

BACKGROUND: Pilonidal disease (PD) is a common inflammatory disease of the gluteal fold, resulting in recurrent acute/chronic infection at the level of the natal cleft. In this study, endoscopic pilonidal sinus treatment (EPSiT), a new endoscopic minimally invasive procedure, was evaluated for its effectiveness in treating PD. METHODS: Two hundred and fifty prospective patients with chronic PD were enrolled in a prospective multicentre study conducted at a secondary and tertiary colorectal surgery centre. The primary end-point of this study was wound healing, and the short-/long-term outcomes

Lateral Orbital Wall Destruction Due to Pilonidal Sinus.

Pilonidal sinus is a chronic inflammatory disease commonly observed in the sacrococcygeal region. The authors report a patient of a pilonidal sinus in a rare location-the lateral orbital region. The authors' patient was misdiagnosed with an epidermal cyst, and the subsequent incomplete excision of the sinus tract led a pilonidal sinus with a high morbidity resulting in the destruction of bone tissue in the lateral orbital wall. It was, therefore, crucial to accurately diagnose and treat before the infection progressed through the bone and caused osteomyelitis.

Modified off-midline closure of pilonidal sinus disease.

BACKGROUND: Numerous surgical procedures have been described for pilonidal sinus disease, but treatment failure and disease recurrence are frequent. Conventional off-midline flap closures have relatively favorable surgical outcomes, but relatively unfavorable cosmetic outcomes. AIM: The author reported outcomes of a new simplified off-midline technique for closure of the defect after complete excision of the sinus tracts. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Two hundred patients of both sexes were enrolled for modified D-shaped excisions were used to include all sinuses and their ramifications, with a simp

Simple day-case surgery for pilonidal sinus disease.

BACKGROUND: Pilonidal disease is a common and usually minor disease. Although wide excisional surgery has been common practice, there are more simple alternatives. This review focused on the aetiology and management of pilonidal disease. METHODS: A comprehensive review of the literature on pilonidal disease was undertaken. MEDLINE searches for all articles listing pilonidal disease (1980-2010) were performed to determine the aetiology and results of surgical and non-surgical treatments. Single papers describing new techniques or minor modifications of established techniques were excluded. Fur

[Pilonidal sinus--surgical management at our surgical clinic].

INTRODUCTION: pilonidal sinus disease is a benign disease with incidence 26 cases per 100 thousands inhabitants each year. The origin of this disease is in sacrococcygeal region with maximum between 15th and 25th year of life. Males suffer from pilonidal sinus disease most often. The synonym of this disease is Jeep's disease and originate in Second World War. We distinguish acute and chronic phase of this disease. The acute phase is characterized by presence of abscess whereas the chronic phase is featured by intermittently secreting fistula. Malignant reversion is described at chronic phase i

Umbilical pilonidal sinus disease: predisposing factors and treatment.

Pilonidal sinus disease is a common problem of sacrococcygeal region. However, it is also observed in the periumbilical area. There are only a few reports about umbilical pilonidal sinus in the literature. In this study, 26 patients (24 men (92 %), 2 women (8 %) with a mean age of 22 years) with umbilical pilonidal sinus disease were included. Predisposing factors, patient characteristics, treatment modalities, and their results have been studied. Male sex, young age, hairiness, deep navel, and poor personal hygiene were found to be predisposing factors. Twenty-five patients were treated conse

Sacrococcygeal pilonidal sinus disease with Limberg flap repair.

Sacrococcygeal pilonidal sinus disease affects younger persons, resulting in long-term loss of productive power. It also has a high rate of morbidity because there is no standard treatment approved by all surgeons. In this study, early and late results of 85 cases treated with excision and Limberg flap in our clinic were investigated. The patients were followed for 9-120 months. The complication rate was 4.7% and the long-term relapse rate was 3.5: Insufficient personal hygiene and inadequate excision were the main causes for recurrence. On the basis of the literature and our previous experien
