[Optometric eye screening in schools : First results of a pilot project on logistical feasibility].

BACKGROUND: We present a pilot project to improve eye health in schoolchildren: annual optometric screening with a focus on early detection of school myopia. The logistical proof-of-concept is illustrated by way of a pilot project at a state high school in North Rhine-Westphalia. The collected biometric parameters also contribute to the collection of epidemiological data. MATERIAL AND METHODS: On organized examination days objective and subjective refractions of schoolchildren in grades 5-7 (ages 9-16 years) were determined, children were tested for abnormalities in binocular vision and the p

Typhoid vaccine introduction: An evidence-based pilot implementation project in Nepal and Pakistan.

The World Health Organization (WHO) in 2008 recommended the use of currently licensed typhoid vaccines using a high risk or targeted approach. The epidemiology of disease and the vaccine characteristics make school-based vaccination most feasible in reducing typhoid disease burden in many settings. To assess feasibility of school-based typhoid vaccination, two districts in Kathmandu, Nepal and two towns in Karachi, Pakistan were selected for pilot program. Vaccination campaigns were conducted through the departments of health and in partnerships with not-for-profit organizations. In total 257,

Comparison of midwifery care to medical care in hospitals in the Quebec pilot projects study: clinical indicators. L'Equipe dEvaluation des Projets-Pilotes Sages-Femmes.

The purpose of this study was to compare indicators of process and outcome of midwifery services provided in the Quebec pilot projects to those associated with standard hospital-based medical services. Women receiving each type of care (961 per group) were matched on the basis of socio-demographic characteristics and level of obstetrical risk. We found midwifery care to be associated with less obstetrical intervention and a reduction in selected indicators of maternal morbidity (caesarean section and severe perineal injury). For neonatal outcome indicators, midwifery care was associated with a

Evaluation of a simulation-based ophthalmology education workshop for medical students: a pilot project.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Ophthalmology is an under-represented specialty in many medical school curriculums resulting in reduced confidence in medical students and clinicians when dealing with eye conditions. Our study evaluates the impact of a simulation-based education (SBE) workshop to train medical students in ophthalmology. METHODS: Second-year medical students were invited to participate in a two-day (eight-hour) simulation-based ophthalmology workshop. Standardised patients, free-to-use simulators, and low-cost eye models were used to teach eye anatomy, physiology, pathologies, skills (slit-la

The Intersection of Intimate Partner Violence, Strangulation, and Brain Injury Screening: A Pilot Project.

BACKGROUND: Survivors of intimate partner violence are at a high risk for having a brain injury because of high rates of strangulation and head and face injuries sustained from physical abuse. In addition to acute physical injuries, survivors experience various health complications. PROBLEM: Many survivors do not seek medical attention for their injuries, and when they do, their brain injury often goes unrecognized and untreated. Research indicates that screening for brain injury can be an effective intervention to increase the identification of brain injuries and medical referrals for diagno

A Pilot Quality Improvement Project to Reduce Intraoperative MRI Hypothermia in Neurosurgical Patients.

UNLABELLED: Intraoperative hypothermia increases patient morbidity, including bleeding and infection risk. Neurosurgical intraoperative magnetic resonance imaging (iMRI) can lead to hypothermia from patient exposure and low ambient temperature in the MRI suite. This quality improvement project aimed to reduce the risk of hypothermia during pediatric neurosurgery laser ablation procedures with iMRI. The primary aim was to increase the mean lowest core temperature in pediatric patients with epilepsy during iMRI procedures by 1 °C from a baseline mean lowest core temperature of 34.2 ± 1.2 °C with

Monitoring long-term court order psychiatric hospitalization: a pilot project in Israel.

BACKGROUND: In Israel, the rules of compulsory psychiatric hospitalization, including hospitalization under a court order, are set out in the Israel Mental Health Act, 1991 (MHA). The MHA does not specifically define the time limits of hospitalization by Court Order, though every patient, by law has to be brought before the Regional Psychiatric Board (RPB) once every six months for reevaluation. The Supreme Court recently addressed this issue and suggested that by having no specific time span, the way lies open for infringement of individual rights (Criminal Appeals 3854\02). Consequently the

Improving clinical practice in primary care for the prevention and control of noncommunicable diseases: a multi-actor approach to two regional pilot projects in Kazakhstan.

Improving access to quality services is integral to achieving better outcomes for noncommunicable diseases (NCDs). In Kazakhstan, like other countries with historically centralized governance models, key to improving quality is instilling a common and shared understanding of the roles and responsibilities in correspondence with the multifaceted nature of quality of care. This review details the experience of two pilot projects implemented in Kazakhstan's regions of Kyzylorda and Mangystau over a three-year period with the aim to improve clinical practice through a multi-actor, multi-interventi
