PURPOSE: With ulnar nerve injuries, paralysis of the first dorsal interosseous (FDI) and the adductor pollicis (ADP) muscles weakens pinch. The likelihood that these muscles will be reinnervated following ulnar nerve repair around the elbow is very low. To overcome this obstacle, we propose a more distal repair: transferring the opponens pollicis motor branch (OPB) to the terminal division of the deep branch of the ulnar nerve (TDDBUN).
METHODS: We dissected 10 embalmed hands to study the anatomy of the thenar branches of the median nerve and TDDBUN. We also operated on 3 patients with recent

PURPOSE: Hand strength is a key component in human hand function, especially to those with strength-required jobs. To evaluate post-injury hand strength, this study was conducted to assess the predictability of hand injury severity scoring (HISS) system to hand strength after a period of recovery.
METHODS: In this retrospective study, 80 traumatic hand-injured subjects were recruited. Hand strength tests measured by dynamometers were performed by subjects in ways of palmar pinch, lateral pinch and cylindrical grip. The logistic regression models were used to evaluate the risk of poor hand str

BACKGROUND: Although carpal tunnel release reliably improves symptoms in patients with carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), the short-term pattern of postoperative recovery in hand strength remains incompletely characterized. Serial measurement of grip and pinch strength, together with patient-reported outcome assessment, may provide a more clinically meaningful description of early recovery after surgery.
METHODS: This prospective observational cohort study included 21 adults with clinically and electrophysiologically confirmed CTS who underwent standardized mini-open carpal tunnel release. All par

OBJECTIVE: The objective was to investigate whether muscle strength in the nonaffected and affected upper extremities (UEs) in children (7-12 years) with unilateral spastic cerebral palsy (USCP) differs from that in children with typical development (TD).
METHODS: A cross-sectional study design was used. Isometric arm strength (wrist flexion, wrist extension with flexed and extended fingers, elbow flexion/extension) was assessed in 72 children (mean age = 9.3 [SD = 1.9] years) with USCP, and isometric grip/pinch strength was assessed in 86 children (mean age = 9.3 [SD = 1.8] years) with USCP.

Although the radial forearm free flap (RFF) is a commonly-used microvascular flap for orofacial reconstruction, we are aware of few prospective biomechanical studies of the donor site. We have therefore evaluated the donor site morbidity biomechanically of 30 consecutive RFF for orofacial reconstruction preoperatively and three months postoperatively. This included the Mayo wrist score, the Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand (DASH) score, grip strength, followed by tip pinch, key pinch, palmar pinch, and range of movement of the wrist. Primary defects were all closed with local full-th

Clinical studies generally reveal a trend of variation in the reported prevalence of the palmaris longus (PL) muscle absence. The aim of this study was to find an answer to the question of whether the congenital absence of tendon would affect hand functions or not. A total of 585 subjects, comprised of 305 males and 280 females, were included in our study. Mean age was 8.9 ± 1.4 standard deviation within a range of 6-11. For both sexes, the groups were divided further into three subgroups including 6-7, 8-9, and 10-11 years of age ranges. The grip strength of each hand and pinch strength of al

INTRODUCTION: Ulnar nerve injuries lead to severe intrinsic hand muscle dysfunction and major impairment of grip, pinch, and quality of life. Distal nerve transfers have been introduced to overcome the limitations of conventional repair and grafting by shortening the regeneration distance and improving reinnervation of intrinsic muscles.
RESEARCH QUESTION: Can distal anterior interosseous nerve to deep motor branch of the ulnar nerve (AIN-to-UN-DMB) transfer restore intrinsic hand function and improve patient-reported quality of life in proximal ulnar nerve injuries?

BACKGROUND: Approximately 50% of spinal cord injuries (SCI) occur at the cervical level, resulting in significant loss of arm and hand function. Restoration of upper limb function is a high priority, and many opt for upper limb reconstructive surgeries to improve daily activities and psychological well-being.
OBJECTIVES: This retrospective multicenter study investigates whether demographic data (sex and age) and clinical characteristics (type of SCI and years since injury) are related to the outcome of upper limb reconstructive surgery.
METHODS: Data were extracted from medical records of in

To comprehend the sensorimotor control ability in diabetic hands, this study investigated the sensation, motor function and precision pinch performances derived from a pinch-holding-up activity (PHUA) test of the hands of diabetic patients and healthy subjects. The precision, sensitivity and specificity of the PHUA test in the measurements of diabetic patients were also analyzed. We hypothesized that the diabetic hands would have impacts on the sensorimotor functions of the hand performances under functionally quantitative measurements. One hundred and fifty-nine patients with clinically defin

PURPOSE: Clinical deficits might vary, depending on whether an ulnar nerve lesion is above or below the elbow. Lack of strength and clawing are common manifestations of ulnar nerve paralysis. However, the magnitude of strength deficit relating to different pinch patterns and the rate and range of proximal interphalangeal extension deficits are poorly described.
METHODS: I prospectively evaluated 14 patients with above-elbow and 16 with below-elbow unrepaired ulnar nerve injuries. The completeness of flexion of the ring and little fingers was tested at the metacarpophalangeal and distal interp
