The reported prevalence and severity of primary spheroidal degeneration in Labrador and nothern Newfoundland is based on a survey of 929 patients. The degeneration is associated with man in outdoor occupations and with pinguecula, but not with glaucoma. Ultraviolet radiation is a probable causative factor and prophylaxis using appropriately filtering glass a possibilty.

In this study 146 pterygia were excised from 116 patients. The eyes were treated with Thiotepa eyedrops over four weeks to discourage regrowth. All treatment was carried out by the one surgeon on consecutive patients. The relationship between pinguecula and pterygium is explored, and the pathogenesis of pterygium growth discussed.

Ninety two patients with porphyria cutanea tarda (PCT) were examined ophthalmically in a paired case control study. The incidence of pinguecula and of pterygium was 8 and 2 times higher respectively, in PCT patients than in the control group. The photodamage to the conjunctiva is considered to be a result of the photoactivity of uroporphyrin in the tissues.

Few cases of actinic granuloma of the conjunctiva have been reported. A 39-year-old woman developed a pinguecula. A biopsy study revealed actinic granuloma histopathologically. This case is an example of the interface between dermatology and other fields, and helps to confirm the existence of actinic granuloma of the skin as a distinct entity.

Ninety two patients suffering from porphyria cutanea tarda were examined ophthalmologically in a paired case-control study. The incidence of pinguecula and that of pterygium were 8 times and 2 times higher, respectively, in PCT patients that in the control group. Conjunctival tumors result from gain of tissue, which can be either degenerative or neoplastic, but also inflammatory. In this article, degenerative (pterygium and pinguecula) as well as benign and malignant neoplastic conjunctival changes (epithelial, melanocytic and vascular tumors, choristomas as well as metastases) are discussed with regard to pathogenesis, symptoms, diagnostics and current status of treatment.

I describe concentrations of reflected solar radiation (albedo) found at the usual sites of various conditions associated with exposure to the sun--pterygium, pinguecula, climatic droplet keratopathy and cataract and eyelid malignancy. Since the degree of limbal albedo concentration appears to be related to corneal curvature, patients at risk can be identified by a simple test and preventative measures taken.

AIMS: To investigate the role of high-resolution anterior segment optical coherence tomography (HR-ASOCT) in the assessment of pterygia.
METHODS: Single centre cross-sectional study. Patients with primary pterygium and/or pingueculae were included. Clinical assessment included HR-ASOCT, colour photography, keratometry followed by histology. Associations were tested between HR-ASOCT features of the pterygium and the degree of corneal scarring and elastotic degeneration, astigmatism and best-corrected visual acuity.

The histological features of 234 conjunctival biopsies from Africans in Malawi have been re-examined. The appearances of solar keratosis, pinguecula, and pterygium are presented as part of a continuous spectrum of the same pathological process and aetiology, which may lead to carcinomatous change. The results are discussed with regard to the specific geographical distribution of such lesions found by other workers, with particular emphasis on ultraviolet radiation as the main aetiological factor.

All true pterygiums are attracted to a specific site at the corneoscleral junction along the 3 to 9 o'clock meridian. The pathogenesis of a pinguecula-pterygium is postulated to be due to a noninfected inflammation at the junction of the conjunctival blood vessels and Bowman's membrane where the autolytic process of inflammation results in a protein degradation amino acid mixture which has the ability of attracting conjunctival blood vessels on the cornea. This amino acid mix is hypothesized to contain a pterygium angiogenesis factor.

HIV increases the risk of OSSN. Here we investigate other factors in a case-control study from Uganda with 318 cases (48 CIN I, 66 CIN II, 81 CIN III and 123 with invasive disease) and 762 controls.
